Warren and Darrell chat about the change to being able to pre-measure in the latest edition of Warhammer 40K and how they think it will change the way the game is played.

I think the idea is to change your priorities and the overall direction of the game- in 3rd 4th and 5th, the main focus for almost every army was how to get the deathstar units into close combat, now its how do you move through/around things to keep your units in cover/out of range in range etc. The only thing I can see it being slightly cheesey for is stuff like the conversion beamer that have different rules for different ranges, or possibly being used to aim Vibrocannons/Jaws etc through gaps in terrain while moving etc, but again both players… Read more »
could you guys make a full blown battlereport in the upcoming “6th edition week” ? you seem to have the best equipment ( camera-wise) and tend to do have a good editing which makes your videos really tasty to look at and given the fact that this is a onetime opportunity ( for the next years to come) it would be really cool to just see alle the rules interacting in a professionally made battlereport. ( not that bluetablepainting or miniwargaming battlereports arent nice to watch but they are for sure kind of wobbly and fuzzy most of the time)… Read more »
It will be nice if Warmahordes have pre-measure… but probably it would need random charges and that will definitely will break the mathematic precision that Warmahordes have.
I’m looking forward to a bit of Gamesmanship measuring, making out to your opponent that your contemplating manouveres that you have no intention of making.
I also like the idea that no one will be able to steal an inch or two everytime they move fleet & charge as you’ll know exactly how far away they are when they start their turn.
Hi all. I agree that pre measuring is the prefered option for ‘clean play.’ .As it means both players have acess to accurate data, that allows them to play the game to thier full potential. I just dont agree with random movement as the way to compensate for it. Why can we still used fixed ranges on ranged weapons, yet movement has to be random.? A simple ‘motivation’ test before the charge into assault , would be one alternative. Eg Pass a LD test , or the unit doesnt assault. Still roll 2 dice , but rather then stop short ,… Read more »
I think on argument for random movement versus motivation tests is that gamers tend to dislike feeling like they aren’t in control of their own units. When I declare a charge, I’d like the charge to happen. This way, it does. It might not connect with the enemy, but my troops still did what I told them to. You could make the argument that that’s just as annoying or that it’s not the most elegant way to address the issue. I think it’s a matter of preference and GW just had to choose what they thought (hoped?) would be the… Read more »
Now this is change that I can get behind. In my books less people need to quess while playing, the better.
means choosing to deploy second can be a big bonus, not only can you deploy to counter specific targets, but you can really optimise ranged warfare by putting your troops out of threat range.
I love the pre measure aspect but have difficulty with the whole random gig- if I am reading it right, How would the WAAAGH! work if you are working a horde /fast attack ork army.
With Ghazghkull as HQ, the waaagh is a charge too right?
Does the random apply to it too?
I mean furious Charge is the staple special rule for the ork player or atleast me, orks can’t shoot for crap to begin with, and its unclear to me the total effectiveness of the orks now…

HI mpopke.
It is a matter of preference.
But why have defined distances for somethings and random distances for others?
It is better for ‘internal consistancy’ in the rules if all ranges/distances are ‘defined’, or all are ‘random’.
The 40k rules set IS unecisarily overcomplicated .
(At least 3 times as many pages of written rules than necissary.)
And some gamers simply just dont like random movement, as careful out manouvering of opponents has far more tactical valididty with defined movement rates .Random movement can simply let ‘luck out play’ tactical manouvering.
I think that GW made this rule just so that they could sell more measuring tapes 😛
On page 109 under Allied Detachments in bold print “your army can include one allied detachment for each primary in you army datachment”. So games that are 1,999 and under have one allied detachment. Now on page 110 under bigger games second paragraph “playing a game of 2,000 points or more, you can take an additional primary detachment.” Then second to the last sentence in the same paragraph, “As stated earlier, taking an extra primary detachment allows you to take an additional allied detachment”. That means no matter what you get one allied detachment.
This is for the Allied Video
My friend used to do the arm length trick, then he grew half a foot and all his measurements based on that were constantly off! XD
