Two Player Starter Box from Privateer Press
June 15, 2011 by dignity
So guys, I dont do this too often, but I've found an interesting little bit of news!
I was in one of the Pressganger areas of the Privateer Press website and it seems that Privateer Press may be doing some two player starter kits for Warmachine.
This sounds like a great idea and it's going to make it a lot easier for new players to get in to the game, but what factions would you guy's want to see paired up in a box, for me I'd like to see Khador against Cygnar, but who knows maybe PP will do multiple sets with each of the factions?
Here's currently what's in the first release:
That's a pretty good deal and enough for you and a mate to kick off a brand new Warmachine habit!

I would buy this if they released it as a ‘Assault of Black Reach’ style introductory boxed game. Im interested in Warmachine but would want something like that to involve my gaming buddies. You release it PP, I will buy it!
It comes with the rulebook, dice and a tape and from what has been said for a very good price (i.e. of two battleboxes). Unlike with AoBR, here you’ll actually get a decent-sized game.
It is like Assault on Black Reach. What more do you want? It has all that you need.
How many points per side do you get in AoBR again?
I think like 570 points for space marines, 600 points for orks-I think (roughly) Good game however rubbish to expand
Typical..after i just bought the rule book and Pom Box set…..
Great idea IMO
I SO want this, even though I don’t need it… Any faction, although I’d like it to be Retribution or Cygnar. Especially if they do special minis exclusive to the set !

Any ideas on price, release date etc yet?
Ok I just did a bit of research there, looks like a September release and $99 which is about £60
This is about the price of the Island of Blood starter box from GW as of now… Except you don’t need to buy rulebooks for Warmachine (thank you rules leaflets and stat cards !), and this is a skirmish game, so you don’t need as many minis. Everybody hopes they make the starter box cheaper, but you do get something for your buck at that price.

I was just talking to a friend about starting a little warmahordes army but was worried about who I’d play with. With this it’d be perfect to split with a friend or keep it and use it as an introduction to the game for interested parties.
That is such a bargain….. fwooo!
Like I said, I think its a great idea and PP are doing a great job I just wonder if there going to make these for wrath.

I would rather see a Warmachine vs Hordes starter box. Cygnar vs Circle would look nice.
Id imagine there will be a hordes starter set along in due course. Not sure how a Warmachine vs Hordes starter box would work given the two separate rulebooks and the slightly different mechanics for focus/fury.
Don’t forget the lack of plastic models for Hordes – those starters might not come so soon …
I’d rather see a straight Hordes set, but I have heard bad things about their plastics so I will wait and see how this goes.
I can vouch for the PP resin and plastic range… The quality is pristine, the casting is excellent, and the material is tough.

I’ve been looking into Warmachine for sometime, unfortunately I was in the process of watching all your warmahordes vids when youtube nuked you 🙁 This is the kind of product I was waiting for (though it’ll be tricky for me to buy with me knowing Warpath minis will be out by then – I’ll probably split the cost with my brother). The fact it has Khador and Protectorate is even better! This said I’m happy to see PP do this kind of thing and make more plastic models available, metal’s only going to get more expensive for everyone. Still, look’s… Read more »
If the above set is accurate, it kind of implies that plastic Man-o-War are on the way… No way they hit a $100 price point with pewter MoW. It’s a great idea – I love two player starters – they turn interested people onto evangelists.
There are plastic man-o-war bombardiers on the way so I wouldnt be surprised if we saw plastic shocktroopers too
Cygnar vs Cryx definetly! Cygnar is very range power and Cryx is more melee soo it makes very interesting for a “educative” stand point because you get to learn some basics and some hard details. And because i love both factions 😛
Good point ! Plus, you get the “good blue mages vs. evil black necromancers” vibe.

Hmm……I almost bought the Khador Starter box the other day. Maybe I’ll just wait til September and have TWO armies to play!
Waiting for a What’s in the Box review 😀
Not a bad price for a starting box – might have to keep an eye on this and could find myself actually starting Warmachine now lol.
Considering the price of a battle box is around £30 in the UK, I’d be very surprised if the actual retail price for this two player set is anything less than £75. But still a good deal if you and a friend know you want to get in to Warmahordes
I think you’ll be very surprised then. 🙂
is it just me but are the news coming from PP getting better and better, whereas the news coming from gw are the other way around? anyway I love this idea, the ideal thing would be that they would offer different faction combinations, so that they might reach a bigger audience. and one more thing, adding a unit to the starter boxes is just brilliant, because this was allways my major complaint about the starter boxes
i love this…it’s basicly two battle boxes with some heavy infantry added in, wich is perfect for a beginner. PP is kickin ass lately, keep it up!
yea but you get a mini rule book too a tape and sice 🙂
BoW Justin
a tape and dice too? wow, i’m even more impressed…statrer box done right. GW could learn from this…
I think the plastic man-o’-wars are brilliant but imho I would hate to see them as exclusive starter set miniatures. I would love to see them as a lone plastic kit as well.
i doubt it would be an exclusive release like that…remember, the resin jacks came out in the starter boxes, then they were released as stand alone kits. the same will be true for the man-o-wars, count on it.
Sorry for the double post (no edit button) but if memory serves when they announced the mow bombadiers they also announced they would launch all three mow unit types as plastic together
hey guys, don’t know if this was posted, but this box set has got to be worth around $300 with whats rumoured to be in it
http://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/2011/06/14/47518/
nope from what i’ve read its like $99 or £60 for us in the Uk but who knows it could change.
BoW Justin
i mean the approximate cost if u were to buy everything seperate would be $300 american
dude, this ain’t 40k…the starter box is 100$. confirmed by PP on their website.
Nice. If there was a Cryx starter, that would be my in into Warmachine methinks.
Well there is always the cryx battlegroup box
One of armies is Khador? If that comes out then its instant buy for me.
This is one sexy product. And it it is true that it is 99$ then its a kick in the balls to GW. PP is showing GW how to introduce players to the game. You cant raise the price on starters sets? Come one GW dont be dumb. Even if you lose money on it you are gonna make money on when people expand those. Same its happening here with this starter. Its a HUGE saving BUT people wont bennefit if they buy it 3 to 4 times. Its just dumb to have that many of the same warcaster and… Read more »
If this contains the rules and is well priced, I’m buying. Great stuff!
I may buy it, it dpeneds what army my brother wants to start.
I am starting Cryx, but if he wants Khador or portectorate I won’t mind. But I am hopign he wants Cygnar.
I am expecting another starter set with Cryx v Cygnar in it.
And another one with Retribution v Mercs in it.
