In fact this is not what suppressive fire really is. Suppressive fire is use when you have no line of sight to the enemy to prevent him to stick his head out of cover. If you can see the target you are always aiming for it, why not.
If you shoot to suppress an visible enemy without hurting it, that is called a warning shot.
So like Overwatch?
That doesn’t quite sound right, gotta say. Why CAN’T you suppress someone that you can see? What if you’re carrying a heavy machine gun, which typically is inaccurate but has a high rate of fire, and you’re shooting at someone far away? You probably won’t hit, sure, but the guy you’re firing at is not going to like all the bullets whizzing past his head and will probably drop back into cover.
Also, a warning shot is a form of coercion, like to get someone to surrender. No relation to suppressing fire at all.
The other thing with suppression fire is that it not only makes them duck but tends to make the shooter the priority of the foe. It makes sense. If your being shot at and know where its coming from you’ll be focused on them. This will open the window for others to move with less chance of being noticed or being shot at as there a lower priority target.
