Megaforces and Wall of Martyrs Arrive at Games Workshop
November 12, 2012 by dracs
It looks like Games Workshop are gearing up for Christmas with the release of some new box sets; four megaforces and one defensive terrain set called the Wall of Martyrs!
First let's start with the new Megaforces. These are some new massive army boxes which will provide you with formidable army to get gaming with straight away. Warhammer 40k is getting Megaforces of the Space Marines and Necrons,
while Warhammer Fantasy gets mighty armies for the Empire and the Vampire Counts.
As you can see these box sets are stuffed full of all kinds of goodies, ranging from troops to special heroes. The Empire set even gives you Karl Franz! How epic is that?
All in all these sets are definitely providing you with a powerful force, which will be a fairly good starting point for a beginner, or provide a helpful expansion to an existing collection.
My only concern would be that this is probably more geared towards an established gamer, as someone new to the hobby might find the size of the army a bit daunting to start with. The problem here is that those who are already more into the hobby are more likely to pick up what their armies need individually.
Along with these armies we have a new terrain set for the tabletops of Warhammer 40k.
This is the Wall of Martyrs, an Imperial defence which can be assembled in a variety of configurations. With a nice level of detail and the option to change its set up, this terrain piece looks like it could provide a new narrative and strategic element to your games. And to set your fears at rest, yes it does have skulls on it.
What is your opinion of these box sets? If you want to get hold of them, better pick them up quickly as supply is limited.

Where do the terms MEGA and ARMY fit in on any of these boxes? exploration force and retinue more like it … and probably darn expensive as well.
Okay, so doing the math with US$ you get these results: A Space Marine Battleforce costs about 79.4% of what the components would cost separately. A Space Marine “Mega Army” costs about 70.3% of what the components would cost separately. If those are the components you want, it’s a pretty good deal, almost 10% better than you would get from most wholesalers who sell around 20% off of MSRP. The Land Raider Crusader costs about $52.20 at this rate, which almost makes its price tag reasonable if you ignore the fact that it’s material costs are about $0.24 at the… Read more »
I recommend picking these up at places like Darksphere or Wayland games as they’re cheaper again than GW’s *offer*. I’ve not yet got a Warhammer army past the starter Dark Vengeance box set which I split with a mate. We’ve enjoyed it an awful lot for what it is but the price tags affixed with expanding our little forces is bloody daunting. He’s a Warhammer fantasy nut anyway and has a large force of Empire and High Elves and wants me to start collecting, I love the models and I’d love to join in but the expenditure seems a bit… Read more »
I don’t think the Mega Army deals are going to be available from non-GW retailers/distributors. If they are, then my margin guess is way off and GW is actually pulling in somewhere between 50–60% margins on MSRP. Really makes anybody who buys at full price look like a sucker honestly. And the reality of that is just one more reason why so many local stores are having a hard time competing with internet wholesalers. I try to support my LGS as much as I can, but the price disparity is actually quite large. It makes purchasing decisions really tough sometimes.… Read more »
if you want to play a fantasy game why not give kings of war a bash, or at least look at the mantic models? if your mate wants to play a fantasy game im sure he wont mind you using proxy models
The only positive I experienced from GW’s vastly overpriced models is when I sold them on eBay for oddly not much less than I payed for them? I don’t know what it is about GW that keeps people playing 40k it is a really unengaging game that costs far too much in my opinion.
For me it’s the models, not the game. I got into the lore through the Dawn of War games, picked up the book release and ended up hooked on 40k about a year before I ever picked up a model. Buying the models is more about being able to make a real version of the guys I’ve made up in my own little army, all the little quirks and details about them being made on something I can touch. Realistically I’ll probably look for something cheaper once my current backlog is finished but for now I quite like making my… Read more »
Im not normally a fan of the EE, but the trench system does look sizeable. does anyone know how large it is? such as how many of each component and their dimensions? if so it might be an idea to do a comparison vs other trench systems out there, such as the amera plastics, total system scenic, urban construct, and maybe some others ive forgotten? Heck if someone told me the sizes of the gw stuff I would work it out
Thank you for those suggestions, never heard of them before and they provide some fantastic stuff! Cheers muchly! 😀
Wall of Martyrs is already sold out in the US. It looks to be still available in the UK tho.
I heard its long enough to go across the Realm of Battle board with a little to spare so thats what 6 feet plus. I heard rumors that it will be coming out later but it will be broken down into smaller sets.
Well, I have zero familiarity with other gaming companies/systems other than GW and 40K, but if I’m not mistaken, isn’t GW the only company where the stores all have play tables and don’t explicitly charge for that? If so, then of course the cost of “keeping the lights on” in stores has to come from the product sales. Our local GW has about 75% of the floor space devoted to play tables and painting stations. I for one love being able to go to the store any time it’s open and getting a game against new and/or varied opponents. The… Read more »
