Mars Attacks Mantic!
May 20, 2013 by dracs
Exciting news to all you fans of cult retro style sci-fi as Mantic Games are teaming up with the Topps Company to create a new miniature wargame based around none other than the popular Mars Attacks franchise!
Most people probably know Mars Attacks from the 1996 Tim Burton film, but that was based upon a popular trading card game of the same name which is produced by the Topps Company.
Mantic will be able to draw upon the rich background and retro inspired art style of Mars Attacks and will be producing a range of miniatures as well as tabletop rules. This is Mantic's first licensed game and, with the successes of games like DreadBall and Warpath, I think that they are sure to do it justice.
The game should appear sometime next year, but hopefully we'll get a glimpse at some of the concepts beforehand.
Who else is excited by this prospect of planetary invasion? I am watching the film as I type.

Hope they do a Jack Nicholson miniature 🙂
Unfortunately the license is from the cards, not the film. No Tom Jones either 🙁
NOOOOOO!
I wan’t to throw 28mm knickers at the Tom Jones mini. 🙁
Ack Ack ACKACK ACKACKACK ACK Ack ackack
A little bit of trivia I never knew.
Actually it was just trading cards, not a trading card game 😉
Odd coincidence that this gets announced shortly after all is quiet on the martian front.
Mantic began this last year after Topps approached them and offered the license.
Would also add that while both feature Martians this is clearly something completely different in terms of genre and general tone. All Quiet on the Martian Front is based on the H G Wells War of the Worlds ideas although set a bit later in a WW I era. The original War of the Worlds was in the Victorian era, of course, so you’re look at a sort of steampunk/alternative history type idea with old beardies using it as a thinly veiled exuse to go “Ooooohhhh laaaaaa!” and “Dun dun duuuuuun” Mars Attacks, on the otherhand, is a different beast… Read more »
I see both of your points, from what Ive seen they have been roughly going their own way with all is quite, I see them not using the style of the late 1800’s style of war of the worlds, its more of the style of the 1953 movie, alien wise at least. Which is honestly barley ten years apart from the mars attacks era. I’m not saying there is some kind of conspiracy here, because I know there’s not, just merely that its strange they’re both coming out around the same time. I’m positive they’ll be different scales, -which I’m… Read more »
I wonder how they are going to do the fishbowl type helmets. Clear plastic parts seem to be the only reasonable option, but make me worry.
I think Mantic are really biting off so many new games and projects, sounds good but they should focus more on the ones they have.
They’re about to spend June, July, and August focussing on Kings of War. After that they’ll do S3 of DreadBall, Deadzone will be November/December which is the earliest it can be ready and it will lead into Warpath. Leaves them a couple of months in between for DKH4 and Mars Attacks (assuming they plan on releasing the latter this year). They comfortably have the space and capacity to fit them all in.
See what you mean then, good luck to them! Kings of War stuff should be good
It’d be great if they tie in some of the elements from the Comic series, the famous Martin Generals or the crossovers when they meet the Robots vs Zombies 🙂
Should be good, and chance to play a little bit of fun for an afternoon.
Think this suits Mantic sense of humour perfectly, and will at least be original. Will be interesting to see what they can come up with!
This is going to be good I can feel it in my water.
Those glimpses of concepts can’t come quickly enough.
