Mark your Path to Domination with RISK Legacy
August 25, 2011 by brennon
So we heard about it on Turn 8 and here is some more information on that new RISK game which is coming from Hasbro...
Pretty impressive don't you think? It has a slight look of Dust Tactics about it, especially with that big walker. Now check out this awesome shot of the board...
RISK Legacy is taking a very long established board game and turning it into a game that is meant to span not just one session, but many. Where usually your game world resets after your session has finished and you begin from nothing when you return the next week, every game of RISK Legacy will have an impact on future games...an interesting concept.
The game employs a 'sticker' system where small tabs are applied to regions of the board showing different twists and turns of dominance across the world. But would you really stick things down onto your board game?
An interesting quote from the publisher of the game is...
"In Risk Legacy, every game you play will change every future game. A decision you make in Game 1 could come back to haunt you in Game 10. The risks you take in Risk Legacy are not like those in any other board game. You and the other players will shape how your world evolves: its history, its cities, even its factions and how they fight. Cards and stickers will come into play. Cards will go out of play forever. You don't forget past betrayals – and neither does the game.
Unlock new rules and watch events unfold as you play more games. No two games will EVER be the same."
There is certainly a sense of experimentation with this concept, but if it pays off it could really change a lot to do with the board gaming world. We shall have more news for you as things unfold with this game.
Interested in this new concept?
Let us know below.
I played something like this as RISK in the future. It was great, you could go to the moon.
This looks like it just a bit different.
This is gonna be very different! It’ll probably unlike any boardgame we’ve ever played, but indeed: we’ll have to wait and see if it catches on 🙂
Risk 2210 AD and it was my favourite version of Risk, ever. After all, you could launch nuclear attacks on the Earth from the Moon, but you didn’t have a lot of control over where they landed so you could end up nuking your own guys. Good times!
That’s it Risk 2210 AD. It was a great game, even for novice players like some of my friends.
I like the concept of each mech arm having its own pilot.
The board and stuff looks very much like War on Terror by Terror Bull Games.
I’m thinking of drafting a letter to Hasbro, so far I have this much.
Dear Hasbro,
SHUTUP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!!
Love, JyndTactica
P.S. When does the MLP:FiM DvD season 1 set come out?
Ha ha, see Warren!! You have to trust your uncle Gav when he says something is worth a looksee.
This looks like to be a great step forward for Risk and will be a great way to introduce people to campaigns, from which is is another small step to tabletop gaming.
Nice one Hasbro.
Thanks for the heads up on it, it does look pretty awesome.
It looks interesting, might need to pick it up. I think boardgames is a way to get people into the hobby, I got interested in the hobby because of a game called crossbows and catapults. You had plastic wall sections and wee castles and 8 models each. You built up your castle and then try and shoot and kill your oppents guys, was fun had magic and everything, it even encouruged you to paint your minis, will try and see if I can find it online. Here is the two armies minis http://www.ebay.com/itm/Crossbows-Catapults-Viking-Figure-Lakeside-1983-/220837497727?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item336af0cb7f http://www.ebay.com/itm/Crossbows-and-Catapults-Game-Parts-Tan-Barbarian-Figure-/360361867283?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53e73db813 and the game was similar to… Read more »
I’d be interested only if it’s a) very affordable or b) you can laminate it. It might be frustrating if a campaign ends and you can’t restart it.
I’d say (hope) it’s dry wipe. otherwise, yes it would need to be laminated.
I’ve not been this interested in a new board game concept for some time.
Could BOW do a thing on Force on Force?
I’m not sure about the idea of a game with no ‘reset’ – not because it won’t be cool as a persistent experience but because it only gives you a limited number of plays before the stickers run out or you reach a point where only one player can ever be dominant. It makes it a ‘disposable’ game but not necessarily with a ‘disposable’ price point.
However, the mecha art is nice and gritty, and since we’re talking about Risk…

Is it just me or does putting stickers on your gaming boeard mean you can only ever play the one campaign – against the same people?
That’s pretty much how I see it. I can see the rationalization if the price range and number of games (hours) puts it somewhere with the computer games, but that’s one of (theoretic) characteristic differences of board games – replay value. Note also that there was talk of putting some cards out of play permanently … as in tearing them in half. Too bad they’ve chosen a pretty bad game to do this. But it will certainly show a new concept. It would be really cool to see a completely modular game, where you’d buy pawns and card decks you’d… Read more »
It’s more or less like running a roleplaying group…just a wargaming roleplay group almost. Should be pretty fun I think, but will wait for the reviews.
I think any of the OOP GW’s campaign games would fit that description better; Necromunda, Mordheim, BloodBowl, … there you keep playing with your minis the way they are, keeping track of wounds, equipment (very much like advancing a RPG character) … at most adding or taking away a model from the warband. Thou granted that’s a miniatures game, not a wargame, so I think I see your point. But neither is Risk, and that’s what hooks me off at the start, unfortunately.
