Live Rounds: Battle Reports You’re Part Of
May 25, 2012 by brennon
If you were watching our latest episode of Turn 8 then you might have heard about our exciting new concept to unleash Battle Reports Live so that you can join in. Well, since we love the community aspect of wargaming we thought it best to see what you think of this idea going forwards and give you an opportunity to have some input...
Speculatively this is how the process will work...
Fridays: Announce the Armies
On a Friday we will announce the armies that will be taking part in the Battle Report. As you may know the first one is going to be centered around Warhammer 40,000 5th Edition (our last game in the current Edition!) but as time goes on we will explore plenty of other systems.
This then gives you guys (the people that really matter) a whole weekend to discuss META!!!!! and give us your take on plans and strategies while also speculating (and advising) on the army lists that will ultimately take to the battlefield.
Monday: Army List Announcement
Mondays will herald in a day of looking through the Amy Lists each side has gone for. Some of you may even see your suggestions from the weekend mixed in!
Tuesday: Mission Parameters & Board
On the Tuesday we'll give you a sneak peek of the Board we'll be using as well as a run down of the Mission each side will be undertaking and of course any mission specific rules we introduce.
Wednesday then becomes a hive of activity where the Armies have been announced, Lists organised and the Board ready for battle. You will have access to forums dedicated to tactics and maybe even a bit of smack talking in the run up to the event...
Thursday: Live Rounds!
Thursday is the big event. Starting in the evening (if you have any suggestions on the time let us know below!) we'll get the cameras fired up and the armies primed and ready for action. Both players will be fighting it out while a devious Presenter and his shrewd Commentator take your suggestions and comments via Twitter and of course the Live Chat. We might even get a few of you to Skype in and voice your suggestions!
Friday: Fallout
After all that excitement its always good to have a wind down and a little bit of a discussion about 'what could have been...'. The forums will be ready so you can talk through all your highlights from a night of gaming and argue with Darrell over where exactly he should have put his Long Fangs!
So there you have it. That's a quick run down of what we're thinking when it comes to Live Rounds. As I mentioned at the beginning we love the community spirit Beasts of War has and this is your chance to give feedback on the process and how we might shape the best experience for you.
...there's even the possibility some of YOU might be able to come over and get a Battle Report of your favourite system on the show!
Drop us a comment below and lets see if we can make this a brilliant event!
omg i just peed myself in excitement.
Imperial Pee < a great paint from GW's new line.
That’s a glaze from my recollection not a paint 😛
Used it and it always needed a wash afterwards 😉
I am thrilled to know that we are finaly going to get BoW batreps and top of it all, onces were we get to have say.
It sounds great but having it spread over so many days suggests it’ll be a lot of work – how often will the batreps be? Once a month like Turn 8? As awesome as it would be to have it every week I can’t see that happening…
No they are not going to be weekly 🙂
I would sadface at this point 🙁 but at least that means it’ll be better for the extra prep time… 🙂
These are not shows they are an event 😉
Enjoyed most when your part of them. BATREPS have been done to death, time for something different 🙂
I’m with you on that.
Hold on the your comment has a smiley face at the end. That must mean it better than weekly…. like daily or hourly!!!! OK I think I’m going a little overboard with this.
I so wish I could be apart of this. Stupid ocean keeping me away 🙁
Based on sports coverage I have seen, you will need:
Overhead tracking cam
Graphics team so that the lines of sight etc can be referred to by the umpires.
Umpire with access to all the graphics for adjudication.
Slo mo replays of dice roles.
Expert player with commentator also with graphics to show tactics
Sheepskin jacket for Motty
There is a load of other stuff but that is all I can think of for now.
i love the idea of live batreps, id also love to see some other games like infinity, flames of war or maulifaux highlighted
I’ll like it as long as it’s not 40k every other game. I’m sick of 40k fanboy Darell. It’s pretty pathetic how uninterested he is in anything other than that.
It would be cool too if you get guest players to come in. Like creators of the game to do the battle. Lets see Alessio vs. Darrell!
@beerogre or vestiges according to my phone :-S I’d love to see your ranger eldar force in action
I think this is a wonderful opportunity for BoW to do something different and really impact the gaming community with fresh ideas and new games. I was really inspired by Mr Priestly on last night’s Turn 8….as I’m sure a lot of other people were. Wouldn’t it be fun if you guys eventually played a GW game with no points limits?…. Or, put your money where your mouth is and explored the idea of narrative play. Once you get the ball rolling, have worked out some of the kinks, and are looking for something different….it might be fun to really… Read more »
@t9nv3 I think you are totally ‘getting it’.
My hope personally is that these battle reports are as much ‘experiment’ as anything else where we do try out new modes of play and stuff thats different or unusual.
It’s live, it’s interactive, it’s supposed to be fun and hopefully just a little bit inspirational.
But we start where we start and its a case of seeing can we make the format work and iron out the kinks!
Might I suggest that you guys flip Mon and Tue? I mean wouldn’t you design your Armies around the mission you are going to send them on?
Cannot wait to see this thing in action. =]
Not that it bothers me in anyway, just coincidently, Batrep is now officially gay according to reports I saw in the Guardian this week.
All the process will be interacrive! It’s a really cool idea. I will participate for sure!
As I’m on the other side of the ocean too, I’ll have a hard time watching the event live, though…
🙁
This sounds like a good idea in theory I can’t wait to see what the results will be. It makes it alot more of a sociable occasion which is what it’s all about ofcourse. Looking forward to this 🙂
This idea has so much potential
I remember a short vid you did a while back where you guys were playing Wings of War. The fun element of the game came over very well and because of your enthusiasm I went out and tracked down a box.
This is great however alot of, well some of us work during the week and it is really difficult to hit this site when it goes live for turn 8…
I think the turn out for it would be alot larger if you guys run this every so often on a weekend so the working folks can get involved. The time change for turn 8 has counted me out hate to see the same action for this 🙂
Other than that it really sounds cool.
plus if you were to spread it out from a weekend to another it would give more prep time for people to get involved as well.
@warzan will you be trying the objective game where the objectives activate in different turns? Would love to see somethin outside of the standard missionsz.
I’d also like to say abuse thank you to you guys, you really keep the community motivated and really are leading the way in your field.
Hold on a minute man this should be open for all war games if you really want to make an honest go of it.
What about Andy and some Warmahordes.
Also Mantic Maulifaux Infinity
To be just 40k if I am reading it right havent watched all of show yet been working…
Darrell is fun to watch on 40k but we need other games represented if I am reading the above correctly.
Well I was under the impression that the first games would be 40K to see out the old 5th Ed and see in the new 6th Ed. That would also give an opportunity to compare the rule sets and introduce us to some of the rules changes.
IMHO that would be of real value to the community.
After that as far as I understand it, other games will be played. Nothing is written in stone on Batrep Live. So it is too early to suggest there will be too much 40K
Fair enough then,
I see people are leaning towards the fun side in regards to 40k. Which is fine but if you guys do Privateer press. I would like to see a more strategy based line up.
Andy gave my Cryx list a reboot at a higher point range awhile back and it helped me win a few games would like to see more of that action maybe.
My message was meant to say “a big thankyou” rather than abuse lol
Did wonder what you were trying to say!
Won’t mention Freud. Dread to think what is going on in your psyche to confuse abuse with thanks! lol
Abuse is prolly more correct as Warren remunerates the other guys with pain!
The one thing that worries me is if you doi a blood angels battle, will the sanguinor bestowing his blessing on a sergeant live on camera get the video censored. Other than that, looking forward to it. PS, if you divide a board into 1 foot squares to make plotting sceneray and unit positions easy, and have good video feeds at either end, you can actually do a battle with people who arent in the same room, just have a table set up at each place, mark the scenery , and follow your opponents moves by moving proxy units on… Read more »
Please do this:
If one of your squads gets wiped out, you down a shot.
lol….that could take the show in a lot of interesting directins….especially if the game lasts a few hours.
I think its great, we get see game that people could be interested in be played so before spending the capital involved, you can just see how it plays, and whether it would be something people are interested in, also It’l be great to actually be there when the crucial moments happen instead of just reading about them, Looking forward to it 🙂
right on, do a flames of war and make me itch for a starter box or 2
The more I think about this Live rounds the more excited i get.
I play quite a few games but there are just so many I have never played and I wonder how many of us will get drawn into a new game.
Also just for a bit of fun, I think if you are rabid anti allthings GW and after the batreps you feel the urge to have a go at 40K should come on and post a confession.
Should use same armies for the first 6th edition game as you do for the 5th. This will give a fantastic comparison between the systems. Then 3rd game change force organisation to fit 6th and see if game improves.
if you guys are willing to buy me a plane ticket and find somewhere for me to stay i’ll come over for a game 🙂
stupid Irish sea getting in the way….
Justin and Sam need to be commentators in matching suits overlooking the game.
I agree with fgponce, this will clearly show the differences and the ups and downs of 6th, but also use the same terrain and mission, players, so it will test the rules and not just another game of 6th
