Leviathans Test Firing!
March 30, 2011 by beerogre
Fresh from Catalyst Game Labs and hot on the heels of the mold pictures, we catch a glimpse of the initial casting of the first Leviathan model!
This is what I wanted to see, these look brilliant!
Proper flying battleships... my steampunk appreciation node is throbbing in a very pleasing way...

Great find Andy.
These are better than I hoped. Will have to download the rules now – to see if they play as well as they look!
Ditto
She looks a gorgeous little model
Really awesome. Much more..Vernian than the Dystopian wars design.
Urge to paint flying ships is growing.
Can’t decide to go with the concept art (greys) or go MORE steampunk with wood and brass??
Looks much more Pulp/Weird World War than what all the cool kids call “steampunk.”
Really I dont think wood and brass would be right for these models, it should be dark grubby steel and soot stained, military mass production and grim warfare.
Wood and brass just seems so genteel, rich aristocrats in their custom made adventuring vehicles.
You’re right it is more alternative history than pure steampunk.
How about some crazy ww1 camo ship “dazzle” patterns?
I think it would be great having a bit of a mixture.
So you’ve got your more drab coloured ones, crazy camo patterns, more sensible camo and then a ship or two that are full on Red Baron mind set of “let them see us and let them fear us.”
I have to agree with you tigernexus.
For one thing the game is set in 1910, I believe. 4 years before the Great War (WWI) these would be diesel powered not steam powered.
Yeah I mean I wasn’t wanting to go by the dates specifically because I have a lot of interests which have now been dragged under the new “-punk” labels and with alternate history in my opinion the dates shouldn’t really matter, infact it doesn’t matter if events are based on this reality at all. I’m not going to go into my “-punk” subsubgenre rant but at the end of the day if a good well thought out product can get a bit more publicity or more search engine hits by putting a “-punk” label on themselves more power to them… Read more »
Well stated tiger… So in that case let me rephrase my last statement. And say that I still agree time line or not this game dose not strike me as steam punk. As you said Steam punk seems to have a certain look to it. Basically like you said polished wood and brass. And this would seem to lend its self to a more Wired industrial look to it. But just so, this dose not sound completely like azz kizzing. I have to say the line ‘my “-punk” subgenre’ is miss used. The term punk is more correctly used in… Read more »
Well long rant short. I fully accept cyberpunk (and love it), the other “-punk” stuff of late are for the most part just rebranding of other already existing genres to try and sound cool and new, and the “-punk” naming is just lazy. So yeah my dislike of the “-punk” thing (aside from cyber) is partly to do with shallow needless renaming of already existing genres (pulp, victorian scifi, weird world war, etc.), and partly to do with semantics over the use of “punk” in the first place. Though while there is a lot of shallowness about the current “-punk”… Read more »
Oh this is looking real nice can’t wait till we get some of these in the studio!
Definitely I feel a Leviathan hub may be in order soon, a big gaping hole in our content has been space (or steam-punk) battleship type war-games, hopefully Leviathan can fix that.
Just bought and downloaded the basic rules set and all the other pdf gear. Nicely produced, giving lots of flavour. Hex based, retro, but kinda fits.
Will try and have a read through – see how the core system works.
Hay Andy do you have any idea of how big these ships are? I’m interested in the scale of this game.
Was wondering the same thing Wolflord.

If you scroll down to the first mould photo, is that a coathanger on the wall top left?
That makes it quite large and want one just to model
If it is a wingnut then it is not so big but still very cool imho
I have no idea if that is or not. But I found these play test pics. And although they are paper boxes the game board makes me wonder about the scale of this game.

Thanks Wolflord and also Elvar below
not had chance to explore the site yet
Does appear that they will be prepainted
For those of a certain age FROOB
(flies right out of the box, a reference to FROG model kits)
Looks pretty nice. Hope they soon will come out with something playble.
According to Monsters in the Sky this ship is about 13cm long and they will be sold pre-assembled and (lightly)pre-painted.
this reminds me of that Dr who episode on the space ship titanic
I can see these being very popular substitutions for Dystopian Wars players.
Spartan Games have kind of stolen Leviathans thunder in many ways by launching what is already 6 months ahead and counting, in spite of Levs long time spent in dev.
Hurah for steampunk.

Hahaha great.
Another which might look nice, if a little more complicated.

wow that’s nice – feel very modern.
If habitat did super liners….
I am really loving the look and feel of Leviathans. I cant wait for the boxed set. Somehow i didn’t get on with Battlefleet Gothic, and I’d love to give this a shot.
Royal Sky Navy, hear i come.
There are some interesting colour combos here:

Wow when you get down the the only photo of a ship. It is realy hard to tell what you are looking at.
I’m really looking forward to this game, and have been for some time. I’m glad they’ll come lightly pre-painted, because I intend to collect a fairly significant force for each nation, and won’t have time to paint them all. I’ll probably only paint up some of my favorite Royal Sky Fleet ships, and a few for the IJN whenever they’re released.
Oh, and hi. I’m new.
Where can I enroll for the Kaiser’s High Skies fleet?
I’m not really digging the design. I like the idea of air ships and battles in the sky but it reminds me to much of ocean going battleships. They need maybe more of a Last Exile airship look, like the Silvana.
This game has been shown at the last 2 GenCons with nothing but flat, 2d, cardboard prints. So happy to see it finally in production.
