Leaked 6th Edition 40K Heretics Rulebook is Real… But…
January 26, 2012 by warzan
The 40K Heretics Rulebook is Real... Only it's Not!
Yes… you heard that correctly. After a lot of digging and snooping around, the inter-webs and other virtual and real dustbins (did we say how much we enjoy old cheese and jam sandwiches) of the great citadel (or should that be Citadel), we have some very interesting news/theories (you decide) about the so-called Heretics 40K Rulebook… or the 6th Edition Leak for those with little flair for the dramatic!
We have come to believe that this is in fact an actual early version of the 6th Edition rules… but not quite. Apparently the Design department were let loose on the 40K system… they were allowed to try anything they fancied… we’re told that nothing was off the table. This “no-holds-barred” version was then edited down with the truly unworkable ideas removed and those that could prove to be exciting or contentious left in to be play-tested… so was born the Heretics 40K Rulebook!
This a version that was very likely sent to trusted play-testers (we still believe these guys exist!). Who like all trusted minions… were turned by the promise of power… or in this case internet notoriety and likely splurted the document all over the web!
I actually found this explanation to be not just more plausible (than the lone gunman theory) but a real breath of fresh air if true, and to me at least it shows a high level of innovation within the design team looking down upon us from the 'Ivory Citadel', and also shows that there is no shortage of ideas knocking around in there.
You can just imagine the design team having a real blast with this iteration of the rules (we loved it so why shouldn't they) but its not been hard to spot a lot of potential for (ED: asshats now now don't get carried away!) gifted players with a penchant for the meta side of our beautiful game... to discover unbalanced lists etc.
And there you have the crux of the issue the design team face, they could probably create a massively fun game at the drop of the hat, and simple folk like me wold love them dearly for it, but alas there is a whole other side (some say dark, Darrell says only!) to our hobby and that is the competitive win at all costs play.
So, fun as they may be, they’re not the final (or indeed likely to be anything like the complete) rule set for 6th edition… but what have we turned up about the actual 6th Edition Rules?
Well some really interesting stuff. For a start here’s what we believe wont make it from the Heretics Rulebook:
Evasion Values are Out – well we think this is a given… I’m sure every Dark Eldar player was praying for the day that their skimmers and flyers didn’t fall over in a stiff breeze, but that’s not all. Our Man in Havana has told us that Dark Eldar players will be very pleased with the 6th Edition updates.
Could that mean an overhaul of the skimmer rules… could it mean more deadly flyers?
Of course it could mean one, both or neither. However, more robust transports would make the Dark Eldar much more deadly… so keep your eyes peeled for more revelations.
The Turn Sequence will remain the same – The biggest shake-up and the one that would mean a rewrite of Assault weapons and the death of certain “shooty armies” ( Tau ), was the turn structure that put charging/melee before shooting. I would say it was unrealistic, but in a world of extra-terrestrial and supernatural horrors, where mankind has moved to the stars… that’s probably a bit redundant.
Anyway… the turn structure will likely remain the same as it is now, although i still think the reversal is tactically more interesting.
No Unit by Unit Activation – Yup that was pretty disappointing for me, (but who knows everything we have printed here could well be misinformation too! - fingers crossed I say.) I was sooo looking forward to faster more intricate games with that option. (Over watch would have been deadly)
Gargantuan Creatures will remain with Forge World & Apocalypse Games – That’s right… probably no supersized tanks and critters for the main rulebook… but does that mean we won’t get any Aracknarok-sized monsters?
Well it hasn’t been ruled out, and as Land Raiders are already that size, it’s doesn’t take a genius to think we’ll be getting more big kits.
In fact that's a definate area of discussion… we all like to gripe about GW prices.
However, it's pretty common knowledge GW are investing all the time in new kits, new moulds, more people (sculpting team is largest its ever been apparently - and picking up designers too - with the Hobbit on the horizon this would make perfect sense too!) and a bigger and better gaming experience… you can take that at face value if you wish… but if it means more plastic kits (and fewer Finecast), and more big bad creatures and machines is it worth it?
So who will be writing this new 6th Edition Rulebook I hear you cry?
Well as you can imagine the creation of a new rule set of this scale is a team effort… but some poor soul has to captain this vessel… so who is it?
Well… we simply don't know! that really is top secret and even we couldn’t get the name (and you can’t use thumbscrews on a corporation these days!)… but we have some ideas on who isn't. (Basing most of this off their recent commitments and things that have been let loose at recent events.)
So here are a few names who may well be involved, but most likely won’t be the lead writer… Matt Ward, Jervis Johnson and Phil Kelly… but if not one of them… then who - bearing in mind that on a project this size they are probably all involved in some way?
Will you need an update to your existing Codex when 6th Edition launches?
We’ve heard that the new rule book was written to take into account the latest releases and so there’s no need to post a massive errata.
However, we know that there are many codices that need a revamp. So I’m very sceptical that there will be “no need for an FAQ”.
Although I’m always prepared to be proven wrong.
So, while events unfold we'll try to keep this article up-to-date with info as it turns up (aside from fixes of spelling, grammar, readability and of course insults to the 'meta gifted!)
For now though… feel free to speculate all you want… or post a question. Perhaps we can piece together a puzzle with our 'spidy sense' and see if we can get the inside track. (US Military aren't the only ones experimenting with remote viewing these days - Remote Viewers please contact us to apply!) (Update: Jessica Moonbeam writes in to say she sees desks full of papers and scribbles - erm helpful Jessica, very helpful!)
Big caveats on this guys, in that while we're confident that the contents of the article are accurate you are relying on multiple sources and research, and... well... there could be many ways in which it may not be accurate (not necessarily deliberate by a source either, pieceing info together like this is tricky!) so take it that its just part of the business these days that while we do our best, there are no guarantees! We will work to keep this article updated.
All of that aside, is the Heretics 40K Rulebook good enough, different enough to warrant a following of its own? (I'm so tempted its unreal!)

nothing here surprises me…including the possible disappointment that some features may be to radical for final release
Some of the BoW Team will be on the chat tonight (tool bar at bottom) for a gossip about 6th ed etc.
Makes me wonder if ass hats is an actual quote.
The main disappointment I suffered was when I saw the words “Matt” and “Ward” written in the “names who might be involved” section.
…
*shudder*
So the leak is real, but absolutely nothing like what 6th ed will be.
Isn’t that the same as not being real?
lol depends on your definition of ‘real’ is it 6th ed – nope was it from gw – yup 😉
How to roll citadel dice was also not 6th ed and from GW. I think this is actually very similar – something released to get a rise out of the fanbase.
The main difference is most of us could believe GW would sell a £30 book on rolling dice, but few of us believed they would write an interesting and engaging rule-set that would change the dynamic of the game…
What he said ^ ^
Right about now 40k needs a roots-review. If 6th edition isn’t that and is still some iteration of 3rd ed, like 4th and 5th have been, then its a complete waste of time. For me the Heretics version seems more interesting and engaging than 5th ed. IS it flawed? Heck yeah! Would I like to see the internet community take it and run with it and to heck with the “official” version? Double heck yeah!
All I will say is ‘good job is wasn’t real’
Far too much abuse would’ve happened as we all know lol
I think there are a lot of things in the heretic version that I like that would seem are going to disappear before the official one, I liked evasion in particular and it actually makes sense, something moving IS harder to hit than something stationary, and the faster it moves the harder to hit, but on the other hand, the backwards assault before shoot thing I just didnt like at all, so fairly glad to see the back of it. I think it will now be a case of waiting to see whats finally released, my gut would say theres… Read more »
no unit by unit activation … pass on this edition as well then .. get with the times GW
Ugh. Sad to hear that EV is out. I’m really annoyed by missing a Rhino that’s stunned because I rolled a 2.
The ‘Heretic’ rules did seem a little too good to be true, frankly. Back to more business as usual, I suppose.
That is my reaction exactly.
Bugger
Well, that’s disappointing.
Only this afternoon i was talking to one of my gaming buddies and i was really thrilled about the 6th edition video, going through all the cool changes that might be coming.
I see all the things that i was most excited about are now gone.
Job well done guys….good piece of investigative work. Now lets see old Spiky Staff turn this into a “Reasons why BoW is evil” campaign.
The silliest part is they’re perfectly up front about how evil they are in the backstage videos, slave labour, bribery and poor working conditions to name just a few…
Yeah, Warren didn’t even bother hiding the “studio shackles” in that last video….Kinda nice to get a good look at them cause you don’t often see that kind of workmanship anymore. The Asian kids look reasonably well fed though…so I’m not complaining.
Reasonably well fed!!!
Time to cut the rations!
Well this is certainly interesting news. And actually good news. If 6th edition blows, you can always turn your back on the Emperor and join the “rebellion” 😉
Heheh. Death to the False Emperor!
Join the heresy! We have cookies!
… To bad, but anyway, I’ll still play this thinggy, I mean why shouldn’t I ?
It’s just a nice little rulesystem like there are many.
But just one thing, are you guys going to do any more video’s on this ‘edition’ ?
I started to lean towards it being more an “ideas” document when I thought about how ygig didn’t really fit with bartering to get to go first but what impresses me more is the use of the word “asshats” in a news item 😉
So who will be writing this new 6th Edition Rulebook I hear you cry?
Perhaps Alessio Cavatore could u imagine that……..
aaahhhhh you feel it to a breath of fresh air.
I quite like Alessio’s work, I don’t think he’d be back to make 6th ed but it’d be awesome 😉
Thanks for this article guys I’ve been very on the fence about this leaks authenticity since release. I think however this system may well get a good following as it seems awesome/different enough that it’d encourage people to play it.
This is pretty much what I thought. The template was not suited to the £50 hardback GW is bound to bring out with 6th, however the template of 5th was used so it just made sense that someone took the original templates and rewrote it.
I hope this encourages people to experiment with different rules and making their own rules.
I believe the new rule that BoW are not saying yet is the rule of pain. Yes of pain. Your now allowed to smack asshats over the head repetitively until they stop being asshats.
Really the removal of asshatery in the game scene will make any rule set all the better.
I like that rule. Down with asshatery!!!!
Its a good thing in reference to turn sequence for horde armies like my Orks or for assault Armies and lists like my fast pack blood angel list.
So not upset about the latest news at all.
And to think, I was lightly tempted to get back into 40K for a bit there.
Depressing, as I have played several games with the new set and thought it was awesome. I thought EV and turn order were perfectly fine. I really hope they keep the victory points system. As I really enjoy the running totals as the game goes on. The broken things are the reserve pool where you can use a few 18pt units to get a massive 2k point strike force on the table turn 2, blasts on tanks being v accurate you could place it so it hits infantry very easily. Skimmers (vendettas etc) getting cover saves for being behind terrain… Read more »
also grenade launchers when launching assaults for dark eldar are way too overpowered, hitting on 2s and getting hit back on 5’s by normal marines is a bit nuts :-).. maybe -1 on WS instead of halved
Well, this news is disappointing, very disappointing.
The leaked book was a very good step to further 40k and bring back some of the things which should never have been dropped from 2nd.
But I can still collect the minis and play the occasional game.
And if I want a game with solid rules I go back to (classic) Battletech or some other stuff.
One of the reasons why 2nd edition still has a following. It wasn’t perfect but there were elements, that should have stayed in the later editions.
Oh thank god Matt Ward isn’t the main writer, that would have been the end of Warhammer 40k as we know it, Where EVERY RULE is not clear…
GW seriously needs to get that man a decent editor.
So, they came up with a bunch of great ideas… and dropped them. Still, excellent work digging this stuff up.
And if we use inverse logic and we said that we are happy, maybe they would change their mind ?
if its been a leaked of a rule book they are going have to change the final version so they can ensure that they sell it
and as for the skimmer rules all i have to say is sigh -___- like we need any more dark eldar players and any more grey knight player for that matter it all i seem to see at my gw
BOW. please. please, please. Do a battle report or something on the heretic ruleset. I still like it better than 5th and its not like we have anything better to do until the new ruleset comes out.
Thanks for the fast up date on this. I think it was the smartest move rather than a bunch of videos on this set of rules. I would like to see some house rules videos based on soe of these ideas. The unit by unit activation might be fun to see. As for the writer I’d love to see Jervis write the rules
No way… sorry guys,but I don’t believe it.
GW playtests things? No way.
