Land Raider Proteus from Forge World

What do you think of the new Land Raider Proteus from Forge World?
Here's what they have to say about it:
The ancient and venerable Land Raider has served the Adeptus Astartes since its earliest beginnings, and many variants and patterns are recorded in the data-stacks of Mars. Adepts of the hallowed Adeptus Mechanicus collectively refer to the oldest of these as the ‘Proteus’ patterns, and examples of these mighty armoured vehicles that survive into the dark days of the 41st Millennium are held in the highest regard, war-relics beyond compare to the Chapters that possess them.
Believed by certain war-savants to be an example of sacred machine-evolution, the Land Raider Armoured Proteus displays early features of the MkIIb Land Raider, enclosing its twin-linked lascannons in bulky armoured sponsons and adding to this formidable anti-armour firepower with a limited traverse twin-linked heavy bolter recessed into the forward hull armour.
I'm no expert, but it looks very similar to all the other Land Raiders I've seen... bar of course the different iconography (each sold separately of course). Can someone explain the difference?
I suppose these might help... Experimental Rules for the Land Raider Proteus

The difference is the “retro look” that makes it resemble the original mini that was lost in a fire in GW.
I believe the change is the two headed eagle on the front is winking.
Its the heavy bolters! yay for actually making a model that has the weapons it should, boo for no front ramp. But it is very like the origional
It’s too big! The original is smaller than a new rhino.
Isn’t it ammazing how all this stuff gets lost in fires in GW. Original rhino’s, Land raiders, warhammer quest. Why don’t they just say lost in a furnace!
Go check the video on forge worlds video feed, the original land raider is actually taller than the new fw proteus, but the proteus is a bit longer 😉 There’s a size comparrison between all the different types of land raiders too 😉
It can only take 8 models, but it doesn’t say it can take terminator armoured models – the 8 model capacity stops most units getting in anyway since the count as two models, but smaller units and characters are still a bit of a mystery, also its missing the assault vehicle rule and the front ramp and it blocks melta weapons special abilities. Useless in game, and its a pretty ugly model imo. I really wish forgeworld would do the stuff that’s in the damn codices that have no models first before coming up with new stuff, even if it… Read more »
I think I remember in the Forge World youtube videos that they try not to step on the toes of GW’s new releases, which is why they let GW do their codex/army book models and FW makes models that add to the range.
Here’s a video from FW’s Visual Feed channel about the Land Raider Proteus 🙂

I like it! Brings back fond memories of the old land raider kit, which i had with the RBT01 Space Marines and first all metal space ork box set (which i still have the minis for). Im looking to add a Land Raider to my CSM Death Guard force at some point so may well get one of these. I think it would look better nurgled up than the new land raider and fits the CSM theme of ancient heresy warriors stuck in time in the warp.
I personally think it’s great that forge world does these kinds of things. I mean, yeah it might suck in games, some people might not like it, and it costs a lot of money but if you stop and think about it, it would be so boring if FW just did codex gap fillers right ?? I mean come on,they used to make display only figures and terrain, and I think it’s great that they’ve been streamlined more with the rest of the GW design studio so you can play their models, but what makes forge world so special is,… Read more »
The difference is that it is the Land Raider ARMOURED Proteus. The clue is in the name. Further visual clues are apparent when placed alongside the standard Land Raider Proteus, which does not have the large bulky bunker looking weapon sponsons on each track section or heavy bolter turret.
Ohh yeah, he asked a question in the article 😛
And you gave the answer perfectly 😀
As an armoured vehicle is ARMOURED not a bit redundant… why not a HEAVY Proteus?
Indeed. Or even Reinforced Proteus. Or just name it something else other than Proteus to make it clearer it’s in fact a different kit.
The proteus is the pattern of the land raider, and the armoured one is still a proteus pattern land raider 😉
Exactly. It’s just some people don’t seem to be abe to distinguish subtle variations on the hull chassis pattern. Or for that matter really blatant variations too.
Just be thankful they didn’t ask matt ward to name it…

Did anybody else notice that the original Land raider was cast in the current plastic, not the baige plastic they were cast in. Hmm me thinks that the molds are still out there!
I’ve seen the old stuff done in many different colours of plastic, I have RTBO1 marine sprues somewhere in almost white plastic, a couple in green and some in dark blue. Could be that’s a darker casting or it could just be its been primed.
when did you get these? I know that much of the rtb1 stuff is being sold with remoulds on ebay
The ones I have are indeed from ebay, weather mine are remoulds or not probably doesn’t matter much since I’m happy with ’em, and if you look out the ads and flyers from the 80s you’ll see they frames shown are in a dark blue plastic, I’ve been told at various times anything from the boxes were colour coded by year to the plastic was that colour in pellet form when citadel bought it and the colour used was just whatever was cheapest when they needed more.
Hmm, mine were always white or grey, never saw the green or blue.
Niiiiiii- £85… nope.
Yeah. 1 Land Raider for the price of 3 just to get that old school feeling? I’d rather get an original off ebay, which should keep resale value just in case. I guess never did care much for the original LR anyway, so for me I just don’t get the warm and fuzzy feeling that most old schoolers get with this.
want to know something that will make you feel even sicker? rhinos came 3 a box and land raiders 2 a box
Yeah, I actually bought a 3 box when they came out. Split em up with my step brothers. They say the new models are more ‘detailed’, but I miss the grab handles around the doors and the antennas, but most people didn’t like them because they broke. Back then the models were more like traditional models – admittedly a bit too fragile for wargaming. I can of course use brass rod to get the same effect, but I get lazy. The RBT01’s has so many little bits to glue on, I remember I kept gluing my fingers together. One of… Read more »
This model is not worth its prize.
There can be only one?
