What sort of stuff can you give to your squad sergeant? Darrell has some good ideas... check them out.

Roland the headless thunderhammerer? Anyways, defensive gear on your Sergeants is a great plan. Unless you’re a chaos marine, and you don’t get storm shields, and then you have to challenge everything from Etherials to old one eye… I’d say you’re probably better off keeping most of your Sergeants cheap to save points to spend on the ones you want to be in close combat, even the old devastator sergeant, does he need a melta bomb? I say no, if a vehicle has gotten close enough to get charged by them you’re probably better off shooting it if you need… Read more »
Heh, I play (Space) Orks, the only survival upgrade I can give the nob leaders is a 4+ armour save, good thing it’s only five points:-P
Which is totaly worth it by the way, at the odds (my odds anyway) he will survive the cheap one round denial sergeant because of his two wounds as well. But if anything with as much as a power maul looks at him he will still cover beind the boyz XD
I’m not a fan of defensive upgrades in general. The opponent has a big influence on whether they take effect at all.
With such a shield, you pay 20 points or so to improve the chance of survival of a 28 point model under very special circumstances.
Can be nice every third or fourth game, maybe even less often. If your opponent comes with IG, Necrons or the like it will hardly be useful at all. If he has Marine Seargeants without any upgrades himself, he won’t care about that stormshield as well.
Haven’t got new rule book or Chaos codex but how does this work out if champion (chaos) turns into greater daemon?
After you win the challange you role on the boon table (with a D66 1 D6 for 10s and 1 for 1s).
On a 65/66 (one chance in 18 I think) you change into a daemon prince. Anyway many other things can happen on the table including nothing or changing into a spawn.
The problem with chaos though is that they dont really have the cheap defensive option and I think that alot of points would have to be spent on a character before he becomes formitable in combat
You mention that if you outnumber your opponents squad you get a reroll for every five guys you outnumber them by. I think it’s worth noting that you still cannot reroll a reroll (page 5), so if your Sergeant dies and you fail the first reroll it doesn’t matter how many rerolls you have left your Sergeant is dead and can’t use them. This is a problem I’ve come across quite a bit since 6th was released.
I’ve never known that you could re-roll a re-roll anyway?
instead of carrying a bolt pistol take a power weapon and have the sergeant throw a grenade on the way in.
All of my deathwing sergeants now have a thunder hammer and storm shield. They are no different to a normal terminator except they can annoy the hell out of your opponent when they survive a challenge.
I run them up front at all times giving a 3 man storm shield wall for the heavy weapons guy to hide behind. There’s little downside to it if the sergeant dies on the walk in but plenty of upside.
Stormshield w/ lighting claw. my Assault sgt’s scare people again.
