Keeping Your Cover Saves While Shooting

Darrell looks at how you can get that little bit closer to your target and still keep your cover cave from that nice little bit of terrain your unit is hiding in.

Darrell keep saying that more than 50% needs to be in cover. The rules say half or more need to be in cover. So having 5 out of 10 in cover is enough for a coversave(pg22). Also you can remove casualties in a way that breaks unit coherency. If you do this, you must try to restore coherency in the the next movement phase(pg12). So in the example you could let one of the guys in the cover die first and you still have cover. If another one dies you can remove the one that keeps the sergeant in coherency… Read more »
This is an old cheesy tactic that has been around for a while. Haven’t had the chance to use it myself yet. It is really useful for keeping objectives where you would like to attack but stay in control at the same time. However this can open your unit up to being charged from the sides weakening the units capability in combat, especially if the unit is widely spaced out. Use at your own risk.
That is really cheesy, I’ve never seen it used though as I guess it isn’t really logical with TLOS. It smells of gamemanship more than the “Spirit of the Game” for me though – yet it could be great fun also.
I can imagine the Ork Konga or the Thin Grot Line right now 🙂
I have to do stuff like this all the time with my Nids. Its all about the cover save with my pathetic armor and all the low ap shooting out there. But yea have to make sure just before assaulting to get everyone outta there since ya Nids No grenades (cept Carnifex…meh)
i play against orks alot. this becomes really cheezy with 15 models snaking toward you with 16 models in cover 🙁 this assumes an IC…
I have done this once with my orcs but and several times with my marines. the issue with with doing this with a squad of 30 boys is having 15+ models in cover is that they are ussually packed really tightly in said cover. This makes them a great target for ordenance as they will all probably get hit and have to take that cover save and pinning check. Maybe I just need to get busy and make larger pieces of terrain…
