Keeping Your Cover Saves

Darrell has a chat about how to move your units up the battle field while keeping your cover saves and keeping your guys from getting nuked by all the big nasty shooting that some armies can lay down.

Inspired. I’ve never seen this used in games to date, but beleave me I WILL be using this tactic. Darrel once again, Fantastic video.
Its a great simple little thing but depending on your opponent it might not help the squad in cover much, but it can help you in the long run for instance if you’re facing a barrage heavy list with a low armour save, or even something like a colossus siege mortar or an orbital bombardment if you have a 3+, the temptation for your opponent might be to cripple or destroy the squad in cover, which can draw a lot of fire power that might be better spent on the rest of your forces.
One of the best tips yet. Personally I think cover is a little too useful in 40k, I do like the tactical dimension it adds but a reduction in its usefulness might be good.
love this tactic – is one poss problem if they nail all your guys in the open [even with their cover save] and you fail a 25% test, you’ll not be able to regroup and you’ll be out of coherency?
Yeah this is what I thought. Wouldn’t you have to make a fall back move to regain coherency, in which case you would be out in the open?
Was there not an old BoW vid about “you always fall back to your board edge” , you can’t angle the individual fall backs to fall back into a unit – which means if you strung out unit [2″ apart] get a whole blown in it AND it fails the test, they are gone, they won’t be able to fall back into cohereny?
Can you take out the guys from the back (the ones that haven’t crossed the no man’s land yet)? That way you don’t have to deal with coherency problems.
juts remember to keep your models within 2″ of another one int he same unit. then it works a treat.
yeah cover saves are sometimes a bit stupid.
“Guys we better not fire! That logn grass is gonna stop my 10 pound lead bullet firing at over 100 mph!”
The rule can represent the fact that your models may not have spotted an enemy hiding in the tall grass, and has chosen to either conserve ammunition by holding fire, or to fire blindly and be less likely to hit.
Hey Darrell, just came across your site and have been watching all your great videos. Great stuff- so I thought I would register. I have been using this tactic for a while now, but I wanted to let everyone know that you need to be careful when allocating wounds, as you may loose the only model that is keeping your unit coherency. Try to keep your 2 or 3 special models in the front group, or the back, and keep your regulars in your no man lands line, and a few regulars in the front and back groups. This way… Read more »
I am confused….why is he getting a cover save at all. is that considered a hill and hes getting a cover save for having someone shoot over the crest or is it because hes behind 2″ of cover so i guess it then would depend who’s shooting at him and from where. Most of the games ive been in he wouldn’t be getting a cover save using that particular terrain. Just seems like the terrain in this video is really sparce to be providing any cover save much less a 4+ I mean sandbags give a 5+ so are we… Read more »
@gritts I don’t see a problem here….. you just have to agree before the game what each piece of terrain counts as and what bonuses/penalties are applied, most of the time it’s pretty intuitive (or if you play at the same place or against the same people regularly). In this case, there was interposing terrain between the majority of the models and the alleged shooers…. this grants 5+ or 4+ depending on what is agreed to beforehand.
WIth 5th editions true LOS rules Unless you are shooting past/through 2″ of terrain then like you said unless you all agree beforehand. but then again you can agree to anything beforehand and its all cool.
Looks great. I’ll try that with my dark eldar!
I saw someone do a tactic where they intertwined one unit around another unit in the shape of an S and was able to get coversaves for 2 units in the open! He was using tyranids at the time but it woud work with any large numbered unit.
