Horus Heresy Goes Hardback
October 18, 2012 by dracs
Black Library have announced that they will be publishing Horus Heresy novels in a new hardback format, starting with the upcoming book Angel Exterminatus.
This latest addition to the series, written by renowned Black Library author Graham McNeill, focuses on the master of siege Perturabo and his legion of Iron Warriors. Joining forces with the Emperor's Children, Perturabo leads his force in search of an ancient xenos weapon capable of extreme destructive potential, all the while being hounded by the survivors of Isstvan V and the remnants of an Eldar craftworld.
As well as being published in hardback, this new novel in the popular Warhammer 40k series will contain exclusive artwork by Karl Richardson.
This will definitely be a must have for any collector and it will be interesting to see just how popular this latest format is with readers.
What do you guys think of publishing hardback copies of the Horus Heresy? Is this a good move on Black Library's part?

Might be a good idea if it wasn’t one made for the wrong reasons – MILKING the fans of HH!
Now the die-hard fans will have to go and re buy the whole collection or ponder on waiting for 3+ months for a normal paperback release.
I for one, won’t be going for the collectors since I like the handy paper format and the price will definitely be overkill!
If, as they claimed on their facebook page, it genuinely won’t cause a delay in getting the paperbacks out, then its great. People who want hardback are getting it and people who want paperback aren’t losing out. Whether doing the hardback actually affects the production of the paperback is uncertain however. I’ll be sticking to the paperbacks myself.
At least they aren’t limited edition. Trying to get the limited editions has just left me frustrated.
If you look at the website there is no release for a paperback edition of this novel, and from what I understand they will not be releasing any hard back releases as paperback. Which really sucks because I liked the Heresy series, and refuse to by hardback books. The only reason BL is doing this is because they are hurting for sales and are hoping to bring their profits back up. Sad really
As for their facebook page it seems that they were referring to other novels normally released in paperback.
On their blog some weeks (months?) back they wrote they’ll release all of the future HH books in both paper and hardback version, with the difference that the paperback will be out 3+ months later for the exclusivity.
And they are supposed to be limited, but not to such small numbers like the Aurelian.
What actually comes out of all this remains to be seen next year!
well amazon have it up for pre-order as a paperback, and black library said they will do it in hardback 3 months before official release of these books.
e.g. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Horus-Heresy-Angel-Exterminatus/dp/1849703582/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1350603504&sr=1-1
Hey, just wanted to let you know that you are terribly wrong on two things good sir. 1. They are releasing the paperbacks on their normal release date(even if that release date isn’t on their website). and 2. They are doing it because enough people asked about it for it to be reasonable for them to do it. Same goes with the Script book they released. Enough people asked for it, they are not doing it ONLY because they need money. That may have something to do with it, they are a business after all.
Hopefully they’ll stop this Limited Edition, Collector’s Edition, Hardback nonsense. Give me the paperback, I’ll buy that. Anything else, not buying it. If the Black Library profits are hurting, this certainly won’t help them get any money from me.
*sigh* Agree with cursed13, GW are really starting to p*** me off with all this limited production etc stuff now.
its not limited edition…
some peope will prefer it in hardback. As long as its not limited edition, i can’t see a problem with catering for those people.
Yeah, seeing as you are the only person in the entire world that buys black library books, right?
I honestly prefer the “Hardback nonsense”, I like series that I really enjoy to be in hardcover because they tend to stay in better shape, as well as look nicer. I can understand what you mean about the limited editions though, I want those new weekender short stories, but you could only get them at the weekender. But hardcovers are just giving people more options, and is a godsend for people like me, who have wanted the heresy in hardcover to begin with.
Yeah, if it’s not in paperback, then I’m out. I like the HH franchise as a fun distraction, but it’s really not worth too much effort…..especially since there is much better fiction to be found out there.
HH books are in general fantastic, and some are actually top quality sci-fi writing putting aside the setting, but I won’t buy this for the same reasons I won’t buy the limited editions – I refuse to be milked by GW, obviously they are one of the few things selling well so this doen’t suprise me.
Oh and hardback is not necessarily off putting I have nearly all pratchetts books in hardback, but then they don’t retail at £20, normally for about 12 quid if you shop smart. Greedy, greedy, dumb GW
