The Hive Fleet Has Arrived, New Tyranids For 40k!
January 4, 2014 by brennon
Games Workshop have put up the pre-orders for the new Tyranids Codex and the models that come with it. See what you think of the kits, some of which you can see below.
First up we have the codex itself which is actually looking very snazzy. The cover art for most of the new edition codicies has been top notch and always has something action packed on the front. The limited edition is also available if you want to splurge on your race of choice.
Then we get to the models themselves and it's interesting to note that on the whole not much has changed with the range. The Termagaunts and Hormagaunts remain the same, and they were good models regardless, but you have some rather large creatures making an appearance now to fill that 'mega-monster' gap.
The mass of of tentacles that is the Haruspex isn't my cup of tea but the Exocrine really is. It's just a massive Biovore but it reminds me so much of the bugs from Starship Troopers.
The flyer, this Harpy/Hive Crone just looks strange. It looks like it wouldn't be able to fly even if you covered it in jet engines but maybe it's got something I'm not seeing which makes it brilliant.
Either way, the Tyranids have arrived and they are looking to start eating your world soon.
What do you think?

I think the exocrine could use a head swap, get rid of the eyes altogether so it really looks like the gun is in charge. At the moment it looks kinda like an alien chest burster just popped out to say hello!
The best thing about Tyranids for me is the endless possibilities for conversion work, with all the kits out there now you can pretty much build any Nid creature you wanted. The problem for GW is how do you design new and interesting models, without creating something that you could already build yourself by converting old kits. That said, I think they’ve done quite well this time round, if you ignore the horribly cartoony purple and white color scheme, and if you enjoy conversion work as much as I do, we now have an even larger range of plastic parts… Read more »
i see what there going for with the Haruspex and they nearly got.
Think it needed the rest of the creature moving forward, likes its actually trying to eat something. The way its positioned it just looks a bit static to me and just doesn’t look right to the eye
im sure there’s a variant in the codex for that flyer where you can model it without the weapons on the bottom, you’re right the just look a bit funny, too gunship like for a tyranid hey
Yea, you’re right there. It needs bigger wings or something because it currently looks like some sort of bumble bee.
I think the proportion between mass and wing span was done right with tyrant plastic kit. Here it looks … fake.
I disagree I think the prolapsepex model looks pretty gribbly.
Liking the look of the models all right. Wondering though how the rules for the codex holds up. Will they be able to hold up against the current very shooty edition of 40K? For me, that’s the big question.
And will nids still be able to play as they should be?
These feel very formulaic – more teeth, more chitinous plates, more tentacles.
Limited new kits hopefully means the rules have been rewritten in a way that the older kits are viable on the field. It will be interesting to see what the new riles bring to the hive mind.
The body of the Nid flyers seem too bulbous and heavy-looking to me. Could they fly? I am no expert but it does not look like it.
Given that the new flyer drops mines out of its arse that float above the ground, perhaps it’s full of gas and the wings are just fro maneuvering? 🙂
Do the nids still have a drop pod or has that been taken out of the codex?
it got taken out to be added into a later Supplement codex at a later date, supposed to even get a Genestealer cult List as a digital download
I like the models, usual problem with the price though :/
Termagant sand Hormagaunts are actually going down in price with this release. Old price £18 for 12, new price £27 for 20, that’s a reduction from £1.50 to £1.35 per model if my maths serves me correctly.
Still expensive for me though 🙁
£1.35 per model really isn’t expensive. It depends on your expectations. When I first started collecting miniatures as a kid I bought a few models occasionally, when I could afford them, and built up my collection over several years. Me and my mates would play games with a couple of units per side. At the risk of sounding like an old fart, people now seem to look at 40k and complain that they can’t afford to go buy a 2000pt army all at once.
Correct for the most part I guess. 1.35 is a good price for a model and alot of the army can be made up of these. I also agree with building up the army over a long period of time and allowing it to evolve.
But if you do want to get an army together with a few big hitters you are going to be spending alot of money. Sorry I might be going on a bit. Maybe I’m gust s bit burned out with 40K
mind you, if you look back a few years to 2006, you got 16 gaunts and a ripper swarm for £18 – even if you ignore the rippers that’s £1.13 each… 2003 you could get 8 of the older casts for a fiver (62p a mini!) Granted, the price creep is no-where near as bad as with other stuff and it is great that on this occasion the price is down a little, when you’re paying for plastics that haven’t seen all that many changes, over the course of an entire decade it’s not all that much to cheer about…… Read more »
As always, unfortunately for some, price is relative.
Also keep in mind, crude oil has roughly doubled in the last 5 years alone, so assuming they are casting in Polyethylene or a similar petroleum based plastic, price increases are inevitable and will probably continue as long as GW are part of the “oil chain”.
So they cost £1.13 in 2006 did they? Well, if you then take the rate of inflation in the UK into account, the price today should be about £1.38 each, rather than the £1.35 they are selling them at.
£1.35 is reasonable I suppose, it may be a nice gesture on GW’s part HOWEVER, you might want to consider that these are not popular models.
cost of oil remains a big issue throughout the entire economy, let alone the gaming industry, but, lets not forget the changes that have occurred in the petrochemicals industry in the same time – price of catalysts used in the plastics production process like Magnesium have not only leveled but have even gone down on occasion throughout the last 18 months, while at the same time, as of 2002, polymerisation yields have gone up considerably – between 5 and 10% each year as the industry continually advances to keep pace with inflation and rising material costs…
I doesn’t matter how much you think they should cost bigdave, that’s just opinion. We can only talk about how much they DO cost and the fact remains that when you look at these particular miniatures, the price rise over the last few years is in line with the general rate of inflation in the UK over that period.
Looks like a solid release, nothing mind blowing for my taste. Good to see the return of bundles with a saving with the swarm. Going to grab the codex and see what is possible – can I make an army I like the feel /look off – if not will see they are one of my maybe armies at present.
I think this a strong start to 2014 for GW with a range that is IMO one of the better ones in 40k in terms of design and original concept. I admire the fact they haven’t tried to ‘reinvent the wheel’ on this range of releases. Instead they have took them existing strong aesthetics and complimented them well in terms of scale, something which 40k has clearly grown in model and scenery wise. I admit im not there biggest supporter but I’ve been really impressed by their THE HOBBIT range and thought that was a tip in the right direction… Read more »
Not sure they have aced any of these. Initially I really didn’t like the Haruspex but on closer inspection just leaving off the spearing teeth should make a much nicer beast…and turning the pink down on the mouth parts. Exocrine…..nice but really needed a wide, plated head…maybe with a line of eyes along the plate edges. Flyer…..just can’t suspend my disbelief that much. Wings need to be double the size….
So not far off..but shame each big model has a slightly daft aesthetic the old bits box needs to remedy.
A serious let down from the recent year of actually pretty damn good releases (Centurions ignored). But not awful, I really hate the Guards but I guess that’s what they’re gonna go with… doubling down on a bad design. Lack of imagination with these new models which is sad – however the Tyranid line is filled with so many awesome models already it’s not *too* annoying.
I agree with you there, the hive guard used to be my favourite large infantry model, but it just looks cartoony and stretched now Imo.
Over all Im just going to use my old armor cast Exocrines and use Trygons converted up with guns and wings as my Harpys Over all I was hoping for the Malfactor to make a comeback as this way the Nids will have a troop transport . 20+ Stealers barfed up by a Malfactor would be awesome
What’s that big thing at the top? With its mouth like that someone better get him some snacks as it has the munchies big time!
based on the look of that harpy, it seems like I’ll be converting a trygon to wrap it’s tail around the flying base with wings, or just omit it from my army altogether.
its nice to see that GW have looked to the old epic range for ideas for the nids. I am looking forward to playing against them
