WizKids & FFG Team Up For Star Trek: Attack Wing
March 12, 2013 by brennon
So do you like the mechanics of X-Wing but prefer the world of Star Trek to Star Wars? Well WizKids and Fantasy Flight Games have teamed up to bring the FlightPath system to their new game Star Trek: Attack Wing...
As you can see it uses the familiar base system we've come to enjoy from X-Wing but with (what I consider) cooler ships and a very neat universe to explore. So many ships have been created for the world of Star Trek and I'm looking forwards to seeing what they can come up with.
"Players engage in exploration and combat, traversing sprawling Star Trek space maps made available via an in store Organized Play program. As commander, players have the ability to customize, upgrade, and assign famous crew members to their fleets, which feature ships from the series’ prominent empires and forces as well as special stats and abilities, and unique maneuvers on separate HeroClix Combat Dials™."
I for one am looking forwards to this and will be grabbing a copy of Deep Space Nine's Defiant as soon as possible!
What do you think?

As already discussed in the forum the setting is matter of preference, but the system seems an odd fit for Star Trek. X-Wing is very much a dogfighting game. Star Trek is very much about large ships that explore and occasionally engage in fleet battles. If anything, I would think something like the Sails of Glory system (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1402889231/sails-of-glory-miniatures-ship-combat?ref=card) would be more appropriate for Star Trek than X-Wing is. I’ll wait until they actually publish rules, but I sincerely hope they didn’t just take the X-Wing system and change the ships. I hope they make a lot of smart changes to… Read more »
i think the rules for Full Thrust are the best for the trek universe. as you’ll see in the forum post i’m not fond of the idea of this.
Sounds interesting! As long as there some unique features and mechanics that reflect the differences I’m keen to see what comes of it.
The advantage of this game will be that you get to issue a command for each move and say, “Make it so”
The disadvantage of this game will be that every turn you get to hear your opponent repeat the command, “Make it so”
ps Bet Warren says “Make it so on the next On-the Table” when reviewing this release! 😛
If he doesn’t I bet Justin will edit the footage in order to make it so. AARRGGHH damn it Chibi, now you have me at it!!! I think i’m gonna blow. 😉
I really LOVE the concepts of this game and I think people are completely missing the point of its production. X-Wing is an awesome game and great to play. Therefore, if they produce a duplicate game that resembles X-Wing, it will be an automatic seller. But only a pessimistic mind would think that it end there. Oh no! In producing this game, what they are ACTUALLY doing is enabling a steady flow of revenue and skimming the tax off of the top to go to Mr T.A.X. Man. In doing so, this will enable the country to get out of… Read more »
Edit: This sort of makes me wish I was shot into space about 38 years ago…
The one flaw in your theory: WizKids and FFG are both American companies (New Jersey and Minnesota, respectively). So they won’t be propping up anything in the EU.
They will also sell from UK retailers which pay tax 🙂 and the UK gamers will obviously want to drink more tesco’s finest ale 😛
I don’t really see how the X-Wing mechanics will apply to Star Trek very well. I think I’ll stick to Federation Commander.
like the look of the ships but agree theyll need to change at least some mechanics to make it worthwhile
I assume they will just be using the heroclix models rebased for this. I’ve picked a few of those up, some are really good, others seem to have manufacturing errors, such as nacels glued on at funny angles / paint applied in the wrong place.
I’m also not sure that the system will suit. I love the WW2 version of wings of war (now wings of glory) but i don’t see it playing well for trek ships unless they change the rules somewhat.
I’v heard Xwing is a nice ruleset, but…Trek? It seems counter-intuitive unless they will fiddle extensively with the concepts. Plus, isn’t Wizkids the company that kills collectible (bleh, might as well play Pokemon!) games?
Anyway, collectible, lame setting that jumped the shark in the 90’s and trying to shoehorn capital ships as dogfighters= no sale for me.
Idea itself is interesting. I didn’t really care about ST Clix but this one could have potential to draw me in.
yeeeeeeeessssssssssss !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Broadside, I love your sense of humour. Your posts always make me smile..I don’t think anything can get some Europeans motivated. I haven’t played X-Wing but I have heard people rave about it. I have to admit I am waaaay more a Star Trek fan than Star Wars. I still play ST Online from time to time but Star Wars mmo (see can’t even remember its name) didn’t hold me for long. I am also looking forward to them producing mini’s that give you an idea of scale from one ship to another. Hopefully the game mechanics will work well… Read more »
What sense of humour? No really, I have claymores set up all over Dover and a big heaped pile of stones should anyone get past. 😀
I just think that it is a piggy backed game tbh. Sure all the bits are cool, but I just feel St should be a type of Firestorm Armada game perhaps. But if people have fun playing it, that’s all that matter imho. Just rest easy in the knowledge I have pointy stones and am lurking. 🙂
Hopefully they do produce minis to scale, but that’s pretty unlikely from WizKids. If you want scale Trek minis, the old (now hard to find) FASA minis were probably the best Trek minis to date (though assembly on some was a real challenge, much like some Battlemechs still are). The Call to Arms: Star Fleet game from Mongoose had some pretty good Trek minis too. I think people who are really into Star Trek should probably look into games like that for good fleet-combat action. Hopefully WizKids will do more than just a reskin of X-Wing though. They really should… Read more »
I love the Xwing system, i just got the game the other month While i think the dogfighting of Xwing is iconic with all the famous ships…One advantage the ST ”version” would have over Xwing would be ship & race choice. There are alot more types of ship in ST than in SW, which could result in greater sales of ship/race expansions. They could even release larger minatures like DS9, various Starbases and a borg Cube. One idea for gameplay could be a stealth system for klingons and Romulans, even the defiant for starfleet. i loved the dominion war in… Read more »
