Heavy Gear Starter Sets Coming Soon From Dream Pod 9
September 5, 2011 by dracs
Dream Pod 9 have a selection of new army starter sets for Heavy Gear which will become available this October. Take a look and see what you think.
With these three new starter kits it'll be easier than ever to get into Heavy Gear.
So guys what do you think? Will any of you be grabbing a set and diving into the mechanised warfare of Heavy Gear?
I’m a huge fan of the Heavy Gear setting.. so it’s great to see DP9 really pushing their products. It’s just a shame about the price. £68(ish) for one of those starters doesn’t look so good when you consider the two player battle box for Warmachine is £62 🙁
I’m with you @siygess, it is a shame. Starter sets no matter the game should be as low as posable to draw other gamers into it. At that price tag I can’t see myself picking it up again. Bottom line is low prices will serve them better than $111 canadian 5 model black talon army box set.
The Northern, Southern and PRDF starters are better value since they offer around 10 Gears for the same price.. but as you say, it’s still not going to draw in many people looking to start a new game.
Plus I have to correct myself on the price – that was just me converting the currency to GBP. After checking Wayland, it’s actually *£78* to buy a starter. Heck, even the six mini, two player starter kit for Heavy Gear Blitz is £45 🙁
Well they’ll going to include a revised version of the Black Talon: Return to Cat’s Eye book with all three of them and the Black Talon force does include a Naga strider.
So when compared to buying all the stuff individually the starter sets prices are a good value. Essentially you get the rule- and forcebooks for almost for free. If you happen to already own them, the starter sets aren’t that appealing.
do you not consider all of the rule books are also in the set?
I don’t think you consider the fact that the “starters” are complete what you need for the game and you don’t ever need to expand and you get 100% of the rules while the Warmachine I believe you do not.
I think Heavy Gear might have been one of the most exciting lines, if it weren’t so overpriced.
honestly, the models (from those small pics) don’t look all that great I’m sad to say, and for the prices…ouch.
As I understand it, the Dream Pod 9 is a pretty community driven company. That means they don’t always hire professional painters to paint their minis, instead relying on the people who play the game or paint the minis themselves. Much of the stuff in the rulebooks is old art from the nineties and most miniature pics are contributed by the playing community. This leads the way to a slightly unbalanced reprsentation when compared to the Heavy Gear 2nd edition era when most of the art was done by one man, Ghislain Barbe. Anyway that’s how I’ve understood the current… Read more »
I agree with the pricing, but it does include full metal figs and rulebooks, but still out of price range.
I do so love the HG setting, i have the old 2nd edition rulebook that gives rules for roleplaying and tactical combat. Reading through it is like reading through parts of my childhood.
Not really excited about the rest of the art for the game either. The faux anime style has worn pretty thin at this point, especially when compared to how they handle the setting and its weird “realism.”
I’d rather they tried shifting the art style more towards how the video game’s art presented things.
Starter sets should be priced so they are unmissable. GW got the idea spot on with AoBR, £50 for 2 decent small armies.
the price should be cheap enough that existing players see your starter set as a must buy too.
although it does look cool.
I’m also quite a long time fan of the Heavy Gear setting. I always loved the extremely rich background and 2nd edition is one of the most played roleplaying games with my gaming buddies since late nineties. I always liked the metaplot that kept the setting moving, but we really didn’t get beyond the Distant Shores which the newer starter sets represent. As for the pricing. I have the feeling that Dream Pod 9 pricing is a bit “stuck” to the old Heavy Gear Tactical era. Back then you didn’t really need that many miniatures and the blister pricing reflected… Read more »
I am a huge fan of the heavy gear setting and tried the game a couple years ago but honestly I do not like the game and I find the amount of errata for each of the books to be a bit outrageous. They really need better Quality control but between that and the rules being a bit clunky I will not play the game. Too bad as it really does interest otherwise.
@toqtamish you think the Errata is big. Do you remember or have seen warmachine during MK1 rules the Errata FAQ was like 30pgs long not really an exaggeration. GW have you seen the pages of Errata for Warhammer 40k and fantasy just the rule books those are long. DP9s Errata is not even close to being that long. They are a little pricey but again look at Infinity or GW they are high priced as well Grey Knights 5 man squad is waaaaaaaaaay over priced for 5 dudes. 2Nd Edition is fun and its a great game not so keen… Read more »
There errata is still more than enough to drive me off. I also do not play GW games. And I have only played Mk II warmachine which has reasonable sized errata and less complex rules.
lol you would have cried if you saw the MKI rules and FAQ 🙂
I don’t think all of you understand that the Boxes come with two rule books as well that gives you every thing you need! All 100% of the rules and miniatures to play. Other starters don’t give you 100% of the rules and an actual full army that you can battle anyone with. You really don’t have to expand from that box although it is very nice to do so. But that box is an amazing deal.
