Hasselfree Miniatures New Female Space Pirate
September 12, 2011 by dracs
Hasselfree Miniatures have put up images of greens for a new WIP. Meet Andreah, a female space pirate/trader.
These greens are truly impressive, creating the sense of a miniature with a lot of character. I am sure that Andreah will be a welcome addition to many sci-fi games, be they skirmish or RPG.
” truly impressive?” For 1980s maybe … Hasselfree make a lot of shoddy stuff. No offense.
Matter of opinion there, for me hasslefree are the only company I trust to get female models done right.
Each to their own I guess but to say they make shoddy miniatures is a tad harsh.
Hasslefree make some fantastic figures. The adventurers range is chock full of characters that stand out. I spent months tracking down the Cobra miniature (Snake Plisskin) for my street gang. True works of art!
I with have to agree with @jaerin Kev and Sally produce some really great female models and they are one of the few companies to produce ladies with “proper proportions”… i.e. not pneumatic… if you catch my drift. 😉 Also, I don’t understand what you mean @poosh about being 1980s? Tastes change… what was cool in the 80’s might not be what’s desirable now. Personally, I don’t want my miniatures festooned with “skullz & spikez” (and I’m not saying you do either) and I enjoy painting the simpler unembellished surfaces… ones that require a bit of skill to paint and… Read more »
I’ve just gone over the hasslefree site a few times, looking at their collections and most of them – to me (then) – seem ‘shoddy’ in a sense that they are 1980ish, which is just my way of saying they aren’t up to scratch in terms of detail and sophistication, compared to a lot that is out there. Not to say there aren’t great 1980s models that stand up to the test of time, but back then the art of making miniatures was young. There are some sculpts at hasslefree, a few collections, which are very good but seem out… Read more »
From what I have seen they sculpt with a rather specific style. The proportions, details and poses, etc. I find it quite nice and refreshing but whenever you have a strong artistic style there will be those who wont like it. No right or wrong answer.. but I strongly agree they do a fantastic job on female minis.
The only thing the seems odd is the arms seem thrown back. It doesn’t look natural, only bring them forward and it will look good.
@manpug Nothing ruins a good model like a bad pose. There’s so many miniatures that get inflicted with this, disease, for lack of a better word. Totally beautiful in detail, but just such unimpressive posing. It hurts inside.
Hasslefree wins again…..now MORE Grymm’s so I can proxy my squat imp guards….back to the drawing boards!
Kev is a great sculptor, models women brilliantly, and the detail here is lovely – I just don’t like the pose. It’s both wooden and not very convincing (you try standing like this with your shoulders back and see how comfy it isn’t).
I think the arms back are a deliberate attempt to create a ‘hello Boys’ pose rather than an effective combat stance- Think Barbarella rather than Ripley. I don’t think its really fair to say Hasslefree’s stuff doesn’t have the level of “detail” other companies put into models- look at the hair, belt buckles or the receiver ribs on Cobra’s M10- they just dont have the “we can so we must” hang up a lot of companies get were they can’t leave a flat surface larger than a few millimetres alone and feel the need to fill it with a vent,… Read more »
I find the level of detail on Hasslefree stuff to be generally fine, myself. I know some folk like more fuss, but then equally some people like less. Look at Steve Buddle’s Eolith and Spyglass stuff for an example of an ultra clean style.
Remember also that this is a WIP.
Very nice.
I really like this model and about 99% of the stuff that comes out of Hasslefree. Great company.
I’m not too wild about this one (is that a space leotard under the coat there?) but that’s the exception for me, most of Hasslefree’s work I really like. And who else provides you with TWO Simon Pegg miniatures, and a Nick Frost besides?
