Sumptuous Sci-Fi
December 7, 2010 by beerogre
Studio McVey has long been known for its quality miniature design and manufacture. While their prices are definitely aimed at the collector, more than the work-a-day gamer. The detail and character of the models they produce are inspiring.
So it was, on my meander through the Internet, that I came across this new set of releases for a modest sci-fi range that has a simple utilitarian design that speaks of those sci-fi TV shows we know and love... that militaristic feel, where big armour is irrelevant as the hi-tech weapons would only shred it anyway... where its better to be lightly armoured and dodge out of the way, than be weighed down.
So, why not take a look at some of these fabulous sculpts from the people at Studio McVey... and while you're there... why not have a drool over some of the other luscious pictures they have on their site.

These are classy. Its a take on scifi that you don’t often see these days. Barely a giant shoulder pad in sight!
I really like the look of these. As bewareofthephil says these are more traditional scifi, the only other well known recent examples that spring to mind are Hasslefree’s scifi troopers and some of the Infinity stuff.
I’ve got a couple of the McVey fantasy models and the quality is utterly fantastic. I am left in a bit of a hard position, buy the limited resins because I know they will be brilliant quality, or wait till the regular metals are released save myself a few quid but risk them maybe not being quite as brilliant (though no doubt still wonderful).
I’m just wondering what I would use them for. I’m in the mood for an RPG of some kind… Traveller might be good with these.

My initial thoughts were AE: Bounty or perhaps .45 Adventure’s soon to be released 2nd edition modded to be slightly more scifi.
Basicly both very narrative driven skirmish games so a fair few RPG elements if you take the time to put them in rather just play it as a straight tabletop.
They are bloody fantastic models… All of them. The limited editions are too good to pass up. A collector’s dream. Jacques Alexandre Gillois (the GOD of sculptors) has done some work for Studio McVey as well. You may not be able to “use” them for anything, but it’s always a brilliant thing to haunt your miniature shelf and show off. I’ve got a precious few of them myself, and, as they say, a thing of beauty is a joy forever… It’s intimidating, you don’t want to start painting, you think you’ll just screw it up, but when you do paint… Read more »
Awesome!
What scale are they??
most are between 25mm and 30mm, the usual scale. Yes, the sculpt is THAT detailed !
The grenade launcher trooper model looks like a reworked version of the limited edition Kara Black model McVey did, certainly the pose is identical though the details have been resculpted.
That would put them at about 35mm from foot to head which is only a few mm taller than most 28mm (measured to the eyes) models. Certainly should look well within the scope of natural hight differences alongside miniatures of that scale.
Having a slight height/size variation in your miniatures is a nice thing.
WOW 😀
They’ve just realised a gaming system called sedition wars any chance of a review guys?
From what I can tell, Sedition Wars is the name of their new miniatures project and is not yet a game. However, they have factions and more sculpts in the works, so it may only be a matter of time before a proper game is released.
If it is I’m sure we can take a look at it.

Never heard of the studio before; they’re not really the type of thing I’ve ever looked for. Thanks for promoting them so I get a chance to hear of the great work they do.
Those modles are great!
We aim to please. 😀
What with Xmas coming up, I thought I would put upa few articles showing people some of the other stuff that’s available from other manufacturers that gamers might not normally consider.
If anyone knows of any other producers that you think deserve a mention, send me a PM to @beerogre and I’ll try to get something written up.
