In the Grim Darkness of Fantasy Flight There is Only War
April 4, 2012 by dracs
Fantasy Flight Games have announced the release of a brand new stand alone Warhammer 40,000 role playing game!
We have been Space Marines in Deathwatch, the Inquisition in Dark Heresy, rogue traders in... well Rogue Trader. We have even been the forces of Chaos in Black Crusade.
But now for the first time we can form the backbone of the Imperium. Take on the role of an Imperial Guardsman in Only War.
Yes, now you can take on the duties of one the Imperium's loyal foot sloggers, allowing you to be anything from a squad Sergeant, to a Tech-Priest, to a Storm Trooper, to a member of the Ministorum. Whatever you choose, serve the Emperor with all your being.
As with all of Fantasy Flight's Warhammer 40k RPGs, Only War will be fully compatible with the existing systems allowing your GM to weave epic interconnected role playing sessions.
Do you think you have what it takes to serve in the Imperial Guard? Could this mean we might soon be able to play as Xenos?

This could make for some very quick sessions – you can leap out of a Chimera, find your lasgun is useless and get eviscerated by a Hormagaunt in just a few minutes in play terms… 😉
Seriously though, I hope the balance and tools for the GM have been made well to avoid that. Being a man and not a demigod in powered armour could make for some great character and narrative.
How many 40K RPGs are needed?
And if said lowly Guardsman isn’t chopped to pieces by a hormagaunt, he’ll find himself on the wrong end of some gretchin’s dakka, lol!
Really what’s the difference between this and dark heresy?
The classes seem basically the same a stub gun can still kill you and your sent to die for the imperium. Why not call it dark heresy 2.0 with updated rules.
I’m guessing this variant will probably introduce good rules for massed combat occurring under player/GM control, seems the only new thing it could really delivery.
Be interesting to see how it compares power-wise to DH, after RT was a considerable step above the starting point of DH (haven’t touched BC, so no idea how that compares, heard mixed reviews).
also nice to see artwork showing a Chimera at a realistic size.
It’s not that the chimera is unrealistic on the table it’s that the IG’s standard models are the size of space marines
In the words of M. Bison, “Yes! YES!”
I think this might be the first of the 40K books that I would actually consider buying, as I’ve had no real love for the ‘pitch’ of the previous games. But IG? Yeah, I can totally get in to that.
*squints*
…hey, wait a minute, isn’t that a female Guardswoman? I thought GW insisted that there were no such thing 😉
Imperial Guard? Really? How do the authors propose that lowly Guardsmen have enough story opportunities to rise above the constrictions of their service un less they are simply aping Gaunt’s Ghosts.
That’s easy! Step 1) Officer issues an order to the company. “Men! Do this thing!” Step 2) Everyone but the party (and the sarge, because there’s always gotta be a sarge) gets killed. Step 3) Sarge proposes that since there aren’t enough men for the frontal assault the lieutenant wanted, a new plan is required, involving sneaking and talking to people and hacking in to things. Step 4) Epic adventure ensues! Step 5) Objective completed. Commisar executes the sarge for demonstrating the ability to think. And thinking is Heretical in this army! Step 6) Rotate out of the front lines.… Read more »
This will be the dream made real of every party killer GM 🙂
Guess I’ll need to fill out about fifty character sheets a person just to play one session. 😉
All kidding aside I’d like to see one where I’d be able to play as a Dark Eldar in a kabal, just think, it would be like menzoberranzan in space!
Personaly I find guard to be some what more intresting than marines becouse theyt are normal humans and point of view of normal human is more intresting than point of view of super soldier.
