If there was another reason to take an ethereal, then no, you shouldnt do this. unfortunately, this is the only thing they do well, besides giving a slightly better fire warrior squad that isnt scoring.
for the greater goooooo………SPLAT!!!!!
and now during every battle there is a white devilfish with the tau in white coats waiting with straight jackets to speed the ethereal away to the nut house!
Genius!! I want a tau army just to have a kamikazie ethereal
One of you said models in a building did not have to take a leadership test and then pointed to your fire warriors in the parapets on the top of the building. Parapets actually do not count as part of the building but instead as barricades. Thus they would have to take a leadership based on the way they were deployed. One must put his fire warriors INSIDE the building to benifit from the leadership amnesty. I know people that kill their Etherials for the prefered enemy. However jumping off a building to kill him is pure genius. Other than… Read more »
I field Lone Wolves and I want them to die (after killing sth).
If it wasn’t for the fact that otherwise Etherials are otherwise utterly useless…
I cant take an Ethereal with Farsight.
sadly, the suicide ethereal was common practice in 5th. now, with falling damage, it is just one more vector for the ethereal to die.
so unTau like.
What makes it un-Tau-like? In killing himself and giving his army preferred enemy, he’s serving the greater good better than by staying alive
“all the guys who could fight”.. where “fight” means hand to hand combat with primitive weapons? The advanced race with high-tech long ranged pulse rifles are no good for fighting, all they do is try to shoot things … what fools, not taking hand to hand combat seriously, insisting on equipping their warriors with the best ranged weapons money can buy. Yeah im perhaps trolling a bit, but this really annoys me about this overrated system… What happened to carnevale? your own western game? dust warfare? more interesting stuff for backstage? turn 8? … i tune in and it seems… Read more »

Free will is crazy isn’t it?
“FOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRR THEEEEEEEEE GREATEEEEEE AGH!K;ASDD…” Prefer Enemy Granted.
There may be a way around this. It says that the ethereal has to be killed, there’s a few rules that remove models from play that don’t state that they have been killed. Doesn’t jaws of the world wolf do this?
Is that a muskrat in the toilet?
Looks like my ethereal is going to be brushing away the cob webs and doning on a crash helmet cause that is worth a try, concidering that i take 3x devil fish fully laiden with fire warriors and broad side team in forts or deepstrike crisis teams so they wont run away. And even better my bro plays chaos lol challenge anyone…
I’d personally favour the long run into enemy territory to see how long it takes him to be blown apart. It makes you ponder on what a weak in-game idea the Ethereal is (for all his comedy value) – he’s not a psyker, he’s not a military commander, he’s not a warrior – he’s a popular hippy politician at best. It’ll be interesting to see how GW ‘fix’ him but for now I’d be content using him on his own and hunting the biggest thing in the enemy’s army – For the Greater Lols!
He’s a sacrificial citizen that grants his people victory. Like throwing yourself into a volcano to save the village kind of thing. But his suicide leap seems it would not grant it because it wasn’t valiant. Not sure how the rules put it.
You can really manipulate enemy movement tactics going against an army who knows this trick. I’d try to block you with some vehicles avoiding challenges at all cost. I could see armies and their combat monster HQs yelling in slow motion saying NOOOOOOO as his uncontrollable blood lust kills the ethereal and dooming his own army.
Funniest daily tip ever. Bravo.
You guys are always great but this must be the funniest video I’ve seen this far! And I must say, it almost seems justified to go out and get a Tau force for this tactic alone, it’s just hilarious!
Remember that the benefit from the preferred ennemi rule you need to make the leadership test.
So units:
– in a vehicule
– that are vehicles
– in reserves
– under the fearless rule (due to allies)
– in a building (Fortress of Redemption)
will not get benefit from the rule.
Means this is a funny trick but you need to test with your whole “on foot” army which result could be less funny…
Units containing one or more models with the Fearless special rule automatically pass Pinning, Fear, Regroup tests, and Morale checks.
No where(I could find) in the rule book/codex does it forbid you from rolling the dice and making the Leadership Test. So, If the Tau are or in a vehicle, under the fearless rule (due to allies), or in a building. Go ahead and test their Leadership and rest easy knowing that whatever you roll the test is automatically passed.
You were right about being in reserves…
No test for them.
Accept the greater good, no matter the odds
This may very well be the only time real big heavy hitters will turn down a challenge, just to avoid the preferred enemy rule kicking in after the poor bastards death. Besides that I really hope they change the use of this model to being more of a command issuer much like IG do. It makes more sense and will make them useful alive.
Even our Ethereals are losing their faith that a new codex is on the horizon. The Greater Good will not be brought to ruin at the mercy of the Tyranids or the sky lighting aflame with Drop Pods invasions of Space Marines, but by the thunderous ploppings of Ethereals raining from the heavens in a desperate attempt to bolster Tau gunlines everywhere.
Before you jump, first make sure ethereal is standing on the sabotaged objective point. He might get some extra greater good afterlife virgins after that. Greater Good Akbar!!! Splat!
I play Tau and never used an Etherial although worked out one for a list I might think to do.
I’ve seen plenty of suiside Etherials but it’s just a beardy way to play.
The times I’ve seen it happen most of the units they didn’t want legging it do and usually get fround upon in clubs and tournies.
It’s up to you how to use em. If there wasn’t a pts increase for the unit thats there body guard then they’d be worth it.
Will see what happens when they do a revamp.
OK now I have to repaint my Ethereal – never used him before but I might now … of course now he needs a red shirt!
another big booster are that all tau vehicles are skimmers, this makes tau devilfish and hammerheads very good at tank shocks as they can go faster than regular tanks which increases the damage they do when tallying up damage inflicted. Also the new rules allow skimmer to move farther upto 18 inches and shoot 2 weapons at full BS this makes piranha and hammerheads able to get abit closer and still shoot. This change effects the pirahna the most allowing them to get their fusion blasters melta off easier best in a group of 3+ allows for a gurantee of… Read more »
