If you need to get those critical Assault troops to the other side of the board, quickly and safely... then the Space Marine Librarian is your friend... or at least your ally of choice.

if you go second then there is a chance your termies could charge on the first turn anyway (slim but possible) and if not then your almost definitely charging on turn 2 anyway. this saves you however many points that librarian is. besides if you don’t want to deepstrike your big 10 man unit why would you make that an 11 man unit instead other than it’s on the board turn 1?
Also if he is on his own he does still scatter, the “if he’s on his own he’s fine” thing is for the next part where if you roll a double someone gets munched in the warp.
vulkan’s spear is a relic blade so therefore a str 6 ap 3 melee weapon…. not sure why its jelly :p but yeah tottally agree gate of infinity was never used enough used to love popping my sternguard next to a vehicle combi melta to deaththen run around in my opponents rear until he sent something to deal with it while blowing him apart from the front with many many cannons 😀
It’s jelly when you come up against something as tough as a terminator it’s not as good as it was.
In 5th they wouldn’t get an armour save but now in 6th as it’s an AP3 weapon they will.
I’ve rarely come up against Gate of Infinity it will be interesting to see if it now becomes more popular now it has Darrell’s Seal of Approval 🙂
Yeah… as @huscarle said, AP:3 hurt Vulkan’s close combat really badly. He’s still a Marine-Killer, but Terminators will give him huge problems… let’s hope his wall of death can take a few before they charge him! There’s also an argument that Vulkan’s Spear is a Power Lance that grants +2 STR. Making it S:7 AP:3 on a charge and S:6 AP:4 when in combat. The Relic Blade entry states it is a “Power Weapon” that grants S:+2 and the Power Weapon entry tells you to look at the model to see what type it is… a Spear in this case.… Read more »
This will be great for me as I often play a Tau player who seems to always get hammer and anvil deployment, he then proceeds to sit his Tau right at the back of the board where I cant get him. I am have been deep striking Vanguard and using fast attack to get to him. But I feel this will work even better!
Top tip boys !
Yay, gate!
I love playing, like Darrell puts it: a ‘Harry Potter army’, both with crons as with ordinary Marines( NO Ultrasmurfs, for The Emperors sake: No!). Both with 10 termies as with 20 Resorb Crons.
Something fun as well (especially with crons) is just not using it the entire game and then on T5: wham!
With ten sternguard I usually use Gate in combo with the 5+ invul power & a pod: drop pod turn 1, get yourself a 5+, and voom away turn 2
2 librarians wih this power would make for an interesting enough army. Especially that you can now be more aggressive with deep strike.
Fluff wise it doesn’t seem to be a space marine thing though. More like necrons in my mind
Without upgrades:
– Librarian and 10 TH/SS Termies = 500 points
– 8 TH/SS Termies and a LR Crusader = 570 points
I personally use 8 TH/SS Termies and a LR Crusader. Or I put 7 TH/SS Termies and a Termie Librarian with SS in an LR Crusader. Although the risk of deep striking has been reduced in this edition, using the above method to get your Termies forward could still leave you one bad scatter away from losing 500 points of your army. Why add such risky variables when there is a much more reliable method for only a few points more?
@cygnite you’re also 1-4 Lascannon shots away from your 8 Termies walking… I say Lascannon… now that all those S:8+ blasts have no half-damage hole in them, there’s a lot of stuff out there can deal with Landraiders. Remember, your Landraider is moving 12″, then 6″ before those Terminators can disembark… that’s 18″ compared to the Gate of 24″ (with a potential for more as well as less). The odds are in the favour of the Gated Terminators to make the turn 2 charge, while the Landraider will possibly take a second round of fire, unless your opponent moves to… Read more »
@beerogre Touche! Thank you for the reply. I think I’m probably going to keep using the LR Crusader though. If the Terminators are on foot, those 1-4 Lascannon shots could be going on them, in which case one or two may be failing their invun saves, and reduce the unit’s combat power. I would also guess that the opponents army would be pouring other fire into the exposed Terminators to try to whittle them down. Also, provided it had not been immobilised/wrecked/etc. in the opponent’s turn one, I would move the LR Crusader 12″ and then flat out 6″ in… Read more »
Land raider crusader vs. casteus assault ram (40,000k approved). About 35 more points, holds ten termies, is a flyer, has melta template weapon. Both are assault vehicles. Less armour and shooty weapons. Has to hover to disembark troops and can’t show until turn two.
Best thing… Can ram other flyers! Land raiders are crap without significant point reduction.
Don’t forget those Firefury missiles, and the fact that you can combat squad 10 termies and drop them off in two different places/groups. My Caestus will see a lot more action than my LR’s now, even my beloved Achilles.
Wouldn’t you have to move out of coherency with the terminators before you can gate back out.? Gate (codex) says “The Librarian, and any unit he is with, are removed from the tabletop…” and BRB says “…a blessing that targets the Psyker and his unit.” . As long as the psyker is part of the unit when gate is used it targets the unit also. As gate is used at the start of the librarians movement phase he cannot leave the unit before using gate so the unit would automatically be targeted too. Not sure why you would want the… Read more »
I prefer my Crusader as about 1/3 of the games I play are against Eldarad spam so Librarians usually blow their own heads up 🙁
Deep strike scatter is too random for me as you can end up out in the open getting shot to pieces
One of my fav tips thus far – look forward to trying it out 🙂
