One of the things I like to do is make my tanks look really brow beaten, battle weary and used. I always take a look at the tracks and where they would flick mud over the chassis and layer mud onto there, as well as thinking of where troops would put their feet to climb into/out of the vehicle. These become the place to put chips, bare metal and more mud.
