Fantasy Flight Talk Big X-Wing Ships & New Tournaments!
August 22, 2013 by brennon
Fantasy Flight Games have gone into more detail about their big ships and exactly how they are used in your games of X-Wing. You can see more information on the ships and the new play styles below...
These ships are obviously too big to be used in the basic games of X-Wing and so they will now be useful in Cinematic Play and with Epic Tournaments.
In Cinematic Play you will be able to play out the evacuation from Hoth in a series of linked scenarios where you take off, take on the Imperial blockade and try and break free.
Epic Tournaments are just that, epic. You will be able to use these bigger ships with specially designed scenarios based on cimematic play. For example the mighty Tantive IV will be able to lend its powerful lasers to the fight against oncoming waves of Tie Fighters.
Will you be picking them up?

Kinda disappointing, I was hoping for an adjustment on game size to allow for the use of the ships in larger games. Here’s hoping it still might happen
If they adjust game for these then I might pick these up but if not then I might not even bother because of not being able to use these normaly.
You can play with them normally. You just play this cinematic style play where you have linked campaigns and such. It’s not just for tournaments. Plus nothing really stopping you using them in the general day to day gaming of X-Wing…or at least I don’t see a reason.

That is how I see it.
When they say Cinematic Tournament play what is to stop people doing likewise on their own tables or coming up with scenarios and campaigns of their own?
Sounds pretty exciting to me tbh
They are increasing the game size for the big ships. The Epic tournament format uses larger point sizes (though they haven’t given details yet about how much larger or whether the table is larger as well, which it should be). The standard tournament format remains unchanged and these ships are not allowed in it. They’ve given very few details about the cinematic campaigns. They’re expanding the options for styles of play in the game, which can really only be seen as a good thing IMHO. I don’t get all this talk about “normal” style of play. What’s normal for your… Read more »
I can easily see using these included in all sorts of house rules for scenarios – something lots of folks are doing, already. The iconic stuff is already released, so FFG definitely needs to find alternatives to keep things going. They are testing the waters with an EU ship in Wave 3, but I’m not thinking EU ships will be able to carry the success on their own. Some folks have doubts that prequel ships would even do very well.
I think the biggest problem with most EU ships is that the concept design just wasn’t as good in most cases. The only EU projects that had the budgets to really hire good concept designers were video games and ever since Bioware did KOTOR, most of those games just make millenium falcon ripoffs now. The older Star Wars games generally had better ship design. And then the obvious problem with the prequels is that… well let’s face it they were terrible. The writing for those movies was just so bad. Lucas needs script doctors. Every movie he made with the… Read more »
How will you play the escape of Hoth without enormous F***g Star destroyers??!?!?! And Lots of them to boot!
This smacks a little of scraping the barrel for models to release.
But they are sexy as hell and I’ll hold my judgment on their playability for just a little while longer.
Given that, as said, the next waves won’t be affected, it doesn’t sound like scraping the barrel tbh
The lack of star destroyers is another issue maybe, Perhaps that will be a future release.
If they do appear, don’t boot them Warren! 😛
I see it as being part of the battle, same as FoW only gives a snapshot of a bigger action.
