See the Fall of Gallifrey Through the Eyes of a Soldier

Tomorrow marks the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who and its long awaited feature length episode The Day of the Doctor. Another prequel mini-episode has appeared, placing us in the boots of a Time Lord soldier at the fall of Arcadia.
The mini-episode, titled The Last Day, takes the form of found footage. A point-of-view camera shows us the world through the eyes of a Gallifreyan soldier, dealing with his first day on Arcadia just as a fleet of fearsome Daleks swoop down.
The fall of Arcadia is something which has been mentioned many times since the revival of the series. Apparently the Doctor himself was there at the height of the Time War. It definitely looks like we will be getting some answers at the 50th Anniversary.
Will you be tuning in to the Day of the Doctor?
You know, Tom Baker was ‘My’ doctor. And TBH my over riding memories are of being terrified and then later on a bit bored and repulsed by the low budgetness of it all. So Dr Who to me was always just a cheap camp british version of sci-fi. A bit like a carry on movie but no boobs or fart jokes. So I Was never really taken by the whole background to it all because I didn’t actually catch on that a background existed at all. Then came Eccleston… Who managed in a single series to set the whole franchise… Read more »
I wasn’t a fan, but the combined efforts of my friends and girlfriend have made me an avid Whovian.
My favourite Doctor has to be the 2nd one Patrick Troughton, especially in Tomb of the Cybermen. That one arc firmly established him as my favourite Doctor and the Cybermen as my favourite Doctor Who villains.
Really like what Troughton did. He had the hardest job. Maintain the doctors mystique, while appealing to a new audience and setting bar for all the others to follow. The equivalent is recasting Kirk immediately after the first run of TOS. Impossible. Not a word the doctor is fond of. 😉
Tom Baker is king and no other doctor can match him.
Saw a double bill of the Troughton films
Big screen and colour was sooo much better than the TV series lol
I think after Jon Pertwee I never really saw a lot of Doctor Who, partly because of the awareness of the low budget camp as Warren put it.
Never thought about Carry On Doctor as a sci-fi franchise but I will now think of Sid James cackling when Barbara Windsor, as the assistant, tells him to be careful where he puts his sonic screwdriver.
There have been some really dodgy eps with Tenant , Smith and Ecclestone , but some amazing ones instead , Warren , track down weeping angels , you will be amazed.
just don’t blink though Warren, whatever you do, DON’T blink!
Blink is one the best episodes of tv ever. Not much comes close. My wife still gets the heeby jeebies about the (original) weeping angels, to he point that when a church was redeveloped into Flats round the corner from out flat in Glasgow, the angel building, freaked her out everyday walking the dog past it till we move to the coast.
[bleep] me! I love doctor who. I’m 32 so Sylvester McCoy is my doctor but I remember reading all the pertwee novelisations in primary school. Still have vhs’s of the time warrior and the ark in space. When Elizabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane) came back I cried and when she actually died I cried even more. Specifically took tomorrow as a holiday day. I may be biased but [bleep] it! it’s going to be a day to remember.
So looking forward to tonights episode.
I was never much of a Dr Who fan… it was really low budget and pondering every time I tried to check it out. Then one day when I was between jobs, I was reading a bunch of fan gushing and decided to give it a try with the “new Who” on Netflix. Eccleston really didn’t do much for me, but I had nothing else to watch so I continued on to the next series and the next. It was probably then that I became genuinely interested. Now the wife and I never miss an episode. In fact, for our… Read more »
Like Warren, I grew up with Tom Baker, but I think its a very different show now.
I also was a bit sad when Eccelston left, but I have to say, as a fan, I think Tennant is the best to play the role, 1st year was a bit awkward, but after that he was exceptionally good.Matt Smith was very different, as he had to be, but I don’t think he quite mastered the role as Tennant, Baker or Pertwee did.
