Anyone for Dawn of War 3?
August 23, 2010 by lloyd
Danny Bilson a THQ exec has confirmed there will be a Dawn of War III and that it’s already in the works with it due in about 18 months after the Dawn of War II expansion Retribution is done and dusted.
According to Bilson it’s going to have a heavier strategic element which is MMO-like (your guess as to what this will be, is as good as mine) and it may follow the free-to-play model of Company of Heroes Online.
Other than DOW3 he also hinted that the Warhammer 40,000 massively multiplayer online game wouldn't be out for at least two years (ah crap). But we do know that playable classes will include a human scout, Imperial Guard, Orks and Inquisitors. But if you want to be a Space Marine you will need to do a lot of in-game tasks to achieve it (makes sense otherwise there would just be loads).
Personally I’m excited because I believe the video game market can introduce new people to our hobby but I’m also well pissed we won’t be seeing these for the guts of 2 years!

Gotta say definitely looking forward to this, all the Dawn of War games have been awesome. Especially DoWII, feels much more like how Space Marines should be, small squads capable of annihilating most foes.
Great news on the MMO as well, it should be hard to be a Space marine, having them run round from day 1 would ruin it. Glad to see Inquistors will be in there. I foresee a great deal of purging in the future. MWHAHAHAH I mean “For the Emperor”
Aw crap! I expected them to first release another 50 expansion packs to include all races/units. =[
Oh well, onto DoW3 then.
Been a while since I’ve heard about WH40K MMO… Need to look into that.
Any news on the Space Marine RPG?
Never heard of Space Marine RPG. They’re making a TPS shooter/slasher ATM, but no RPGs. Frankly as a RPG-person myself I don’t see any potential for Space Marines in that genre. Someone connected with i.e. the Inquisition is much more viable choice for a true RPG. Don’t get me wrong, but what do Space Marines, do? They get up, train, pray, train, pray, fight, sleep for 2 hours and repeat the cycle. BORING. But a normal person freshly recruited by the Inquisition, climbing up the career ladder, fighting xenos or the enemy within would be a much more interesting concept… Read more »
I think he was talking about the Deathwatch RPG by Fantasy Flight Games which looks freaking cool. http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite.asp?eidm=108&enmi=Deathwatch Link for anyone interested
I think we should all be thankful when GW see fit to give their blessings to third parties producing work in different genres,as we know they don’t do it lightly.
And even more thankfull when they avoid EA….. Bam, oh yeah I went there.
MMO looks good, I’m glad as a pie to see DoW III as II was good, don’t get me wrong a tachnically amazing engine and gameplay but I’m a fan of base building hahaha.
The Emperor protects! (so hopeflly he’ll ensure that they’re good games, along with Space Marine )
Amen to that brother
Nice… I’m not an RTS kinda person when it comes to video games. I prefer good ol’ RPGs. But Dawn of war was one of thhe few Real Time Strategies which got pretty deep into my heart – mostly due to great multiplayer, as I find the campaign a bit dull. Never played the second game, but surely will. I’m liking the idea of making video games out of GW franchise.
It’s good for the hobby. I.e. I started with Dawn of War before playing our beloved wargame.
I honeslty don’t know where to be excited or worried about DOW3, because DOW 2 was a big let down, esp the campaign. Please relic no more of this re-using of the same maps with different bosses and give the maps a proper story and bring back in-game cutscenes!
with regards to dark millenium online and space marines i think its a good idea that you start off as a scout, the same as any new aspiring space marine would.
Different talent trees would be nice,
FAST ATK: for melee and pistol weapons, jump packs and maybe bonuses to vehicles,
HEAVY SUPPORT: for ranged dps
TROOPS: for weapon flexability with melta, flamer, bolter etc
HQ: for maybe a tanking class as a commander, option of being apothcary to heal or chaplain to give out Buffs.
really excited about it!
I would actually prefer for them to relesase more expansions for DoW2 with all races on them than release a whole new game.
I love the Dawn of War games. My favourite is DoW: Dark Crusade, but only because Necrons and Tau appear for the first time (except the Fire Warrior game, but that was a very bad game…). I think DoW II and it´s expansion are great, so I think Relic will repeat and make a very good game.
I’ll keep an eye on this being a fan of both dawn of war games and relics other strategy games it should be good but will what and see what changes they make to the series this time.
I want to play guard 🙁 *crys*
Just a note from Jeff “EgonSpengler” Lydell the producer for DOW2 retribution.
Are you working on Dawn of War III?
Already addressed by Noun earlier this week, but no, we are not working on Dawn of War III yet. We ARE talking about it, and a lot of ideas are batting about what to do next. Some of those ideas include more expansions and/or DLC’s for Dawn of War II.
For now, we are working on Dawn of War II – Retribution, and only that. We certainly don’t have time for sequels just yet 😉
I am seriously needing to get a desktop, I can only play DOW2 on mega low settings, due to my so called ‘gaming’ laptop’s meagre system, any way, where did u get wind of the new expansion, and does anyone know anything about it other that its name?
oh damnit, I hate this, because this means that the races I play (Tau & Dark Eldar) are probably not going to be in Dawn of War 2 or maybe they are but then I can wait for another 5 years, which sucks :\
This better not be one of those pay to stay online things, but atleast i have two games that are coming out that i’m looking forward to.
I think for dawn of war 3, they should release the tau, eldar, orks, and necrons for the first dawn of war 3 game, then for the first expansion, they should have a game called rising shadow or something like that in where their is 3 new races, the tyrannids, the forces of chaos, and the dark eldar, then the last expansion is The rise of the imperium, with the space marines, the imperial guard, and the sisters of battle appear as the new races, and also add on and comment about ideas for the games here, remember, every comment… Read more »
