Darrell Discusses… Arjac the Rockfist
February 14, 2011 by darrell
Arjac’s background in the wolf book goes something like this...
Arjac was a blacksmith (or Iron Priest) for the Bear Claw tribe. Whilst working at his furnace one day with the other Iron Priest’s, they came under attack from sea monsters... Kraken Spawn!
At the climax of the battle, Arjac make a heroic last stand, where he is almost killed. Logan Grimnar, the Great wolf, arrives on the scene, leading a cadre of reinforcements. Seeing what this huge bloke had achieved, Arjac was promoted to Logan’s personal champion and a member of the Wolf Guard... well that's it in a nutshell anyway...
Unlike most of the named characters in the 40k universe, Arjac is not a independent character. This means that he can’t be picked out in combat or shot individually... and for all intents and purposes he's just another regular guy... except of course he's not that ordinary!
Arjac comes with some serious special rules. He hits everything on a 3+ and has STR:10 when in combat. If that's not enough, he re-rolls misses against independent characters and he's an Eternal warrior.
He wanders onto the field toting a Thunder Hammer (that he can lob at you) and the obligatory Storm Shield... in other words... he's a one-man killing machine!
Now, you may say "Darrell... I know all of this!"
Well you got a nerve! But the thing is... when I play Arjac... he never dies!
I've fielded him easily, fifty times and he still stands. Not just in friendly games, but in two entire tournaments. At the end of every game Arjac has remained standing, with a pile of dead models around him.
In one tournament match, against some pretty-boy Blood Angels, he downed three characters, a vindictator and two rhino’s... in the two other games.... enemies just stayed away from him and refused to fight!
You may be thinking that all you need to do dog-pile Arjac and you'll win all your games against the Space Pups! But, no my friends, it just ain't that easy.
Arjac is accompanied by a unit and with the correct choice of bodyguard, Arjac can become nigh-on immortal.
I use 5 Terminators with Storm Shields and Wolf Claw... you see... what happens is, the wolf claw guys kill off most of the opposing unit and then Arjac kills the characters, or any of the target unit that survives the initial savage clawing.
But you know what the best thing about the whole lot is?
If you field Logan Grimnar, then Arjac and his unit become troops! That's (possibly) the best unit of troops in the game!
In the objective missions, you're going to need lucky dice and a dose of cod liver oil to shift those boys.
Once you have them standing firm on an objective, you can forget about it. Meanwhile, the rest of your army can concentrate on taking the enemy objectives. For kill points games, just try taking Arjac's kill point... go on... I dare you!
You'll soon find out, it will cost a lot more than the 1KP you get back for taking him out.
Finally, you may try the line that Arjac and his unit cost about 450 points (700 if accompanied by Logan), now I'll agree that's quite a lot of points... but when you have a unit that never loses... I think it's cheap!

Best go and buy Logan then
Heh….I havent had the luck Darrell has had with my Arjac…but its been pretty good. He is my favorite character out of the Space Wolf codex.
Cool article, please do the Deceiver.
I guess the only Viable tactic to get rid of Super killing machines like the Above is super massed fire. Make him roll 24 , 2+ saves and he will fail some of them. hopefully..
but still thats pretty insane. I knew the Wolve’s codex was strong with Jaws and such but this…
Or you could smack a couple times with a rail-gun. Sub-munition to get rid of his entourage and solid shot to squish him.
Good Luck hitting him when he has got 5-10 other termies to take the damage first
5-10 termies stuck in an large blast thats S6 AP4. Plus a line of kroot, about 20 strong, all keeping distance and shooting. And then a couple shots from some broadsides which is a couple of twin-linked S10 AP1 shots. Not too mention the 72″ range of the rail-gun. All in one round, first or second.
Meanwhile the rest of my army moves up unscathed.
yet another example that proves space wolves are the premier ass kickers of the 41st millenium…suck it blood angels!
funny
iv played BA Vs these puppies
he loses every time
even when hes out pointed me by 3 times iv pnwed him
im telling you dante and sanguinary gaurd knocked logan arjac and 3 wolf claw guard and a frost axe-chian
buuuuuuut i did use dante’s magical glowing clowmask as my mate called it was on logan and they failed the death mask test
either your just that good a BA player, or they suck that much at space wolves. i admit a dante list is a tough nut, but he can be busted (no pun intended….mostly) that’s the whole thing about 40k lists though…no matter how good it is, someone’s got your number.
well space puppies aint his 1st army but his 1st army is space badgers wich he uses as a successer chapter to the puppies and uses there codex
A close combat unit that costs 478 points?
A close combat unit that will kill anything it hits
Any marine army can take 10 terminators for 400 pts.
This makes me smile Darrell a nigh immortal uni, thanks for the advice i think its nearly time for me to take my wolves and space marines out of retirement and to start painting and posting hope this becomes a series on here.
So do we! I have my editors cattle prod ready to get some more articles out of the (self proclaimed) Beasts of War primarch… 😀

My first reaction when I saw this article? That’s not Arjac in the pic, that’s Lysander the Arjac wanna be 😛 I have to agree, Arjac is a serious beast and lasts longer than almost anything. 5A hitting on 3+ @ str 10 on the charge is just plain nasty I run mine in a raider with my TH/SS Saga of the bear lord and a couple of frost blade guys any time I can squeeze them in at 1500 or above, and they’re always worth it. Also as per the new FAQ any model that is wounded by the… Read more »
lol yeah I thought it looked remarkably like Lysander too 😛
I don’t know what Arjac looks like… so I stuck the first pretty Space Wolves picture I found on it! 😀
That’s what you get when you have a 40K know-nothing publish an article. 😛

It’s OK… Super-Lloyd to the rescue… he’s fixed the picture on the main page!
Hurrah!!!

I am not familiar with the SW codex, but this just makes it even more of a slap in the face that Dante didn’t get EW 🙁
true dat
What about an ork mob or two assaulting them. Say that it’s twenty in each with two cc weapons. Arjac unit will get crushed under 160 attacks that hit on 4+ and i presume wound on 4+. That’s no less than 40 2+ saves they will be required to make.
40 orks hit logan 7 atks 4 wolf claws 16 atks arjac 6 atks with rerolls cause logan gives em prefered enemy and you get 29 dead orks. then the 11 orks left attack and make you take like 10 2+ saves that you can split up… yeah i like playing against orks 🙂
What is so special about this unit that makes it better than marine or other army’s deathstar units? And does spacewolves really need it?
i play this. 24 terminators for 1850pts. it rocks. ive played 7 games so far with it and have yet to lose, though 2 + d3 objectives are harder missions. kill points are auto win. blood angels run away from me, and even orcs try a shooting game against it. you cant kill 24 guys with 2+ armor 3+ invul saves. at least not when dice are normal.
watching demon princes blow up to 30 power weapon wounds is hilarious!!!
Thanks Darrell!!
Arjac Rockfist is awesome. i have thought about running the above unit but adding in a wolf priest, with the oath of war (preferred enemy) and the wolf claws the unit then gains re-rolls to hit AND re-rolls to wound.
that includes arjac with re-rolls to hit and re-rolls to wound = awesome
Redeemer, Wolf Priest, Arjac, 6x lightning claws. 500-700 pts
But thats over 40 attacks that re-roll hit and wound + Arjac
Definately worth it. 🙂
what has peoples been using for arjac becuas i use a mixture of lysander and some wolfy bits from the wolf pack and termi pack
and hell maybe evn upload som pics i will once i get him back from my school display cabnet (i wont the red templar golden dragon trophy for my conversion and paint but im terrible compared with other people iv seen)
If your opponent has a stupid super tough unit, you do your best to avoid it. Concentrate on killing the rest of the army. The good thing about this is he has to come to you to kill and most armies can get a lot of choices for the same points cost. What i mean is that a uber unit isn’t worth the points if it doesn’t kill equal points.
