I am loving drop pods now, and my Sternguard in drop pods are awesome unless Strike Squad get “Warp Quake”, to which I’m in trouble. However, I didn’t realize that I don’t have to nominate WHICH drop pods come down until my turn… Live and learn. It is true about the drop pod doors…. There’s nothing in the rules that states you have to open the drop pod doors. I do it anyway, but I may reconsider if my drop is messed up to block line of sight. I’m not sure if it’s very unsporting… That said, I’ve been on… Read more »
Hmm not sure whether it is covered in the new rulebook and will need to check BUT the drop pod door thing was in an FAQ. Maybe Space Marine FAQ (which would still apply in 6th) that you ignore the doors for the purposes of shooting. So you don’t have to model them open but your opponent can still shoot through them.
I play CSM’s and I am considering a Deepstrike army. Obliterators, Terminators, Abaddon and Typhus allong with two 35 man cultist (plague Zombie) troops and I think some CSM troops as well. Is it something you would consider to be viable? I ally with Daemons as well so a small detachment of Plague bearers, nurglings and a cheap Herald of Nurgle just to allow for a Soul Grinder. Vehicles may not be the most durable thing but that threat of a large blast in their backside keeps them pre occupied and 13/13/11 isn’t all bad turn one (possibly). So my… Read more »
PS…I hope that TTN is treating you well and you are back to making videos much more often, I love the site and listening to Andy’s strategies and Darl’s recipes for cheese 😉
PSS….I forgot it’s the last day of the world so if you don’t resond I’ll understand HAHA :O
Thanks. I’m on my way to France to get picked up now.
the army you’ve just suggested sounds fun to me but the big difference between a drop pod army and other deep strike armies is that drop pod armies are guaranteed to have half their forces down in the first turn and (if i understand the compatibility of the reserves and drop pod rules correctly) you can have nothing on the board to begin wasting a turn of your opponents shooting.
Actually, I believe you do have to start with something on the board with the 6th Edition. Even if I had a full drop pod/deep strike army, I’m sure by the rules, I must start with something on the board. It’s something GW cleaned up from the 5th Edition. And when you take into consideration a 1500pts Necron flyer army, they all go in reserve with their Troops loadouts. If he had nothing on the board on his Turn 1, I would automatically win.
Unless, I’ve misunderstood you here, which I apologize for 🙂
ah i understood it as the drop pods HAVE to go in reserve so, because its a dedicated transport, you could place your marines in it…. and you only auto win if there’s no models down by the end of a game turn, which is both player turns, and drop pods allow half your army to be down on your first turn…. the issue is do the units with the transport count towards your half army max in reserve or not.
I believe if a unit is in a transport, dedicated or not, they are both considered 1 unit for reserve purposes, at least that’s what they say for storm talon escort rules.
Don’t got my book with me so don’t quote me on it.
So Darrell what is your latest SW list ?
My current list is
Logan Grimnar
Thunder wolf lord
ss/th runic armour Necklace Saga of the bear
2x fenrisian wolves
Thunder wolf lord
ss/th runic armour Necklace Saga of the beast slayer melta bomb
2x fenrisian wolves
8x wolf guard
8x combi plasma
4x combi melta
Drop pod
5x wolf guard terminators
5x combi melta
Drop pod
5x wolf guard terminators
5x combi plasma
Drop pod
5x Thunder wolf cavalry
Thunder hammer
10x Fenrisian wolves
Its pure hammer and anvil. I either have won in turn three or lost
Seriously, I do think it’s a shame there’s no “Schwarzenegger Commando” Special Rule to let you fire off both combi weapons at once. Much like the “Gunslinger”, which is fantastic for BA Vanguard, say, even at a pricey cost.
Nice list, Darrell 🙂 🙂 Wolf Guard with combi weapons must be pretty tasty in a drop pod. I’d heard of you taking 10 WG to a Doubles at Warhammer World, each with a combi-flamer as defense and combi-plasma for the drop. Snazzy!
the best drop pod list i can think of is logan with 6 units of wolfguard with combi-weapons and some rune priests if there are enough points left over…give them all plasma and use divination to get re-rolls all across the board. turns space wolves into super tau 😛
You don’t need to spent the points on a rune priest Logan dose the job equally or even better than a rune priest. The priest can just fail, especially if you face Nids and Eldar rolling three dice isn’t good. Logan automatically gives preferred enemy (re-rolls one’s to hit and wound) or tank hunters re-roll all armour penetration dice). If the priest passes his psychic power roll He gives re-reolls to hit. The dose give you a psychic defence that Logan doesn’t but my list can’t afford the points.
Yup. My rhinos are now gathering dust while my drop pods have been dusted off. Sternguard are the most killy alpha strike unit by far. I do like Ironclads in Lucius pods though as they seem to last longer than Sternguard, and I can get two for the same points cost as a fully decked out 10-man Sternguard unit.
Tacticals are still very good in pods as well, especially with combi weapons on the Sarge.
You know what’s missing with deepstriking vehicles (in general, eg the Blood Angels Land Raider): If you hit an enemie model, it should count as if you tank-shocked that unit instead of moving your vehicle aside (drop pod) or simply blowing up (everything else). At least to me that’d make so much sense (and it would be fun as hell).
I’d love that as a rule, i’d start landing drop pods and monoliths on everything i could 🙂
I like my ironclad in a drop pod, i give mine the assault launchers for the defensive grenades and have it behind the pod when it turns up. That way 95% of the time when the enemy get near it it gets a 5+ cover for the pod in the way and usually a +1 to that (for 4+ cover) thanks to the stealth the defensive grenades give it. The launchers also give it a nice little 8″ range, S3 AP- blast as a bonus too, ok the blast wont do a lot but it’s there if you want it.
Always forget all the new frag rules.
Try it in a Lucius Pod. No need to hide as you get to shoot and assault upon arrival. If it’s infantry, you’ll be locked in combat.
my local group doesn’t like forge world stuff being used and at 65 points (nearly double the price of a normal pod), no weapon and taking up a fast attack slot i’m not sure they’re as worth it, i’m fine with hiding for a turn anyway.
There’s nothing in the rules that states you have to move the rino with the track chain in contact with the table, using your logic, you can put aside the rino for block line of sight…..
the capsule is open toped, and the asault bolter is inside. wen landed the doors is opened
sorry for mi English

Just caught up with this video and have not read new 6th edition rules yet, (son has book) but Space Marine codex clearly says “Once the Drop Pod has landed, the hatches are blown and all passengers must immediately embark.
Once deployed the Drop Pod is no longer a sealed enviroment and is therefore counted as open-topped.
“shake his hand!!! no his throat, more like?
Does 6th edition over ride the Codex?
