Darrell and Andy have a look at another of the older codex's from Games Workshop, this time we have the classic army that almost everyone will have had at some point... that's right!
The might of the Emperor's finest... the Space Marines.

Mmmmmm vanila
I always enjoy your Codex and Army Book discussions…
I play Necrons, how did you guess, and they don’t scale down very well at low point levels. I have a small Marine army for quick 500 pts games. So many different ways to play them.
yeah there’s certainly not many ways to play necrons at that level lol its awful
*puts on Warren’s voice from Turn 8 last night*
Space Marines! rise the Bratwurst legion or whatever it was!
I just got back into 40k recently here and I picked the Space Marines basically because of the high versatility that they have. But I was looking at the Blood Angels codex and I love their models, paint schemes, ect. My question for you guys is, what are your opinions of the play style of the Blood Angels?
Blood Angels do everything Space Marines do but better. You can have some ridiculous units and combos that make the vanilla codex look like the ‘Nids book (except for Broken He’stan). For instance, you can buy up to 3 independent characters for one Elites slot that give every unit within 6″ Feel No Pain and Furious Charge… for 50pts each. Also, the assault marine squads gain massive benefits when deep striking as they are literally twice as accurate as normal deep strikers thanks to one of Matt Ward’s typical “special” rules. They also cost the same as normal assault marines… Read more »
Kor’sarro Khan, Darrell got the name right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’ve always been a huge fan of the blood angels, and they are a very effective close combat army. If you like the idea of racing forwards and cutting people apart then they’re your men.
Something often overlooked though is the blood angels ability to hold the line. With being able to apply buffs like feel no pain to units, you can have really tough to shift marines sitting in defense. Overall a really solid army with a little less versatility overall than the normal marines, but they make up for it in other areas…
Sounds great. Thanks for the info!
the difference is enhanced is deliberate, mutation is random and often undesired or unexpected, for example, the black rage is an unwanted mutation.
You can take Bikers as troops as long as your Captain is on a bike.
And if the bike squad is al least 5 strong.
Yep. The big thing that Khan lets you do is outflank your entire army
For being golden boys of GW vanilla marines are strangly weak compared to more specialized chapters like Blood Angels and Space Wolves. They lack that power that would give them ability to stand toe-to-toe with most powerful armies in 40k.
Vanilla space marines are starting to show their age a bit compared to newer codex armies, especially those that are assault oriented (e.g. blood angels, space wolves, grey knights, dark eldar). I’ve been playing them for just under 2 years and have about 8K worth of models. I love the flexibility. In the current gamespace, I do best with shooting oriented lists (except against Tau & Guard). Also, I win more games when I take as many low cost units as possible and buy few options/upgrades. Just my 2 cents/pence worth.
I really appreciate all of the optimism about this book; it’s very refreshing to see stuff like this on the internet these days.
Thanks for the great vid!
Blood Angels, we can get there faster … to die faster. Have an extra-speedy tank? That’s cool with me, as I don’t have to move much to get my melta weapons in range … The Space Marine codex in neither weak, or showing its age. I’m doing quite well, even against the new codex-es. They’re flexible, meaning I have everything for everything that comes my way. I have trimmed-the-fat, though, until I have the best examples of each list choice. Have a vehicle upgrade that confounds incoming fire from over 12″ away? That’s nice. I have a Speeders with a… Read more »
I love the fexibility of the lists and for chapter creation. Making your own themed army is easiest with the vanilla space marines.
