Darrell and Andy are back in the studio to have a quick chat about who they think is the cheesy pick for your warlord in Warhammer 40K. But what do you guys think? Will it be one of the big named characters, or the little no named hero that you've spent time and care crafting in to your lord of death?

Any decent barrage weapon and that IGG HQ squad is dropping like flies whether there’s an aegis or not. A S6 is killing the Commissar Lord giving you First Blood and Warlord turn one if you can centre it over his head. That’s a lot of Look out sirs to pass. 🙂
I don’t think this is cheeses, it’s more common sense….but even then, players will often take named characters rather than the more survivable DIY ones because they come with army-wide benefits…such as Vulkan. Ok, Lysander will likely last longer, but Vulkan will twin-link all those weapons and mastercraft them too……and for 10 points fewer.
You have to look at the broader benefits to your list, rather than just choose the most survivable warlord.
@tushan10 bear in mind you don’t need vulkan to be your warlord to use his ability it just replaces chapter tactics doesn’t make him your leader.
Andy you don’t need all those characters you can only have 1 challenge a combat! annoyed me because i wanted to challenge lots of people with my archon with soul trap -_-
Agree secondary objectives are vital this edition… even to the point where i have taken units based more on survivability than killiness to deny that first blood point and so they can soak up the damage to get me line breaker.
he means 1 challenge a round of combat and by then the IG guy will be dead
page 64 issuing a challenge “Only one challenge may be issued per close combat” i thought i could challenge every turn apparently not… my club play we can but I’ve played at other clubs who say no….the majority say no.
100% agree, the commander needs to be at the back somewhere “commanding” not running about getting slotted by a luck lasgun shot !
Once I got 3 victory points for 1 model (Commander Shadowsun) 1 for first blood, 1 for killing a unit (it was purge), and 1 for slay the warlord.
now imagine if you got the warlord trait for getting extra points for killing in a challenge 😉
In some cases it may not be just that easy. If you pick, for example Abaddon, he must be your warlord and must declare and accept all challanges. I know that this is only a small example but there are a few examples like this. I know in dark angles there is a named character that must be the warlord and I quess that this will be the case in nearly all the codexes to come. Also there are warlord trates that give benifits to the army when they are up close and personal to the enemy. Anyway I guess… Read more »
True enough @redshane I am just of the mind that a “great” character is one that benefits the army as a whole, like Vulkan buffing all the flamers etc rather than a CC animal like Abaddon.
@magpie Abaddon grants Preferred Enemy (Space Marines) to any unit in 12″ so it’s actually pretty feasible to use him as a tactical Warlord, keeping him in the back to buff Havocs and/or Obliterators while defending them against assault. Obviously this will only work on half the armies in 40k, but the potential to use Abaddon for something other than just a straight assault unit is there.
You know, I hadn’t really thought of Abaddon in that way. Thanks for the info, I think i’ll use him defencively in the next few games where I play against Space marines and see how it turns out
I have a question about deep strike mishaps, particularly when they involve Grey Knight Warp Quakes. I will propose a hypothetical situation as follows… A unit deepstrike mishaps by landing in the Grey Knight Warp Quake bubble. That unit proceeds to roll a 2 on the mishap table(Misplaced). Can the unit be placed back into the Warp Quake bubble by the opposing player in order to re-mishap the deepstriking unit in hopes of destroying the unit? I think it’s total bull-crap, but there is a player in my group who is adamant that this move is legal according to the… Read more »
I propose that this is also bull crap. I would say that you can only misshap once just like you can only re-role a die once. If the guy is adament then I guess that he could place you in the Warp bubble again but you would not misshap this time. Anyway, I think we may be a little off topic here.
My take on the warp quake is that it’s not a new Deep Strike when you get the Misplaced result. It is still the same one that you just got the mishap for so all you get to do is deploy them in a new spot, your not deep striking onto that new spot.
@crazee this has occured at our club several times and we play as both @magpie and @redshane stated my favourite shenanigan is to use it with the re roll my reserves warlord trait as my forces are more likely to come in while his will mishap if land in my bubble… this either delays them allows me to place them in a crossfire of psycannon fire or they die! Gives you some nice battlefield control.
