Our three resident cheese maestros (Andy, Darrell & Swampy) have all got together to chat about one of the nasty tricks you can play on your opponent in Warhammer 40,000. Using one Aegis Defense Line and some unexpected miniatures to fire it can be a deadly combination.

recall this cropped up on the forums and @darrel joined in… i see this as perfectly fine tbh haven’t used it on anyone at my local club but then there’s only a few of us with flyers so it’s not a huge issue… i just like having a quad gun for s***s and giggles. suprised darrel didn’t point out his hoot it then trash it tactic.
A particularly fine roquefort there
whats I am going to share is this. You take a little dreadnought and put him behind the aegis defense line you have him take the gun what it is and he can shoot every weapon he has and the gun on the aegis defense line! and he can go to ground as well
Works well with Black Templars Venerable Dreadnoughts, as they can take Tank Hunters
Nope. The model can fire the gun emplacement weapon INSTEAD of his own weapon(s) (Pg. 105).
Drop Pod cannot use the Quad Gun. You must be in base contact with the gun to use it.
Pretty dumb imho and every so slightly twisting the rules. I mean how would a vehicle operate the quad gun? Common sense would take over here in any real scenario and i’m sure any tourney organizer worth his salt would tell you no.
Tyranids can’t use Quad guns its in the FAQ.
Q: Are Tyranid units inside buildings (i.e. the Bastion) subject to
instinctive behaviour tests? Furthermore, are they able to manual fire
emplaced weapons or weapon emplacements?
A: No to both questions.
Unfortunately the rules of the game and common sense are not the same thing.
Most vehicles in 40k have a crew so I would think they would operate it. Remote access is a common technology right now and remote control weaponry has been common place for over 20 years so I don’t see why it doesn’t make sense. If a guy in the US can operate a MQ-9 in Afghanistan by remote why can’t a guy in a tank operate a gun 5 yards away?
think of it as like a drive through restaurant, except instead of rolling down the window to order a big mac it’s to blow the s*** out of something 🙂
Interesting use of the defense line. This is a simple request for future BOW video’s. You have such great terrain and tables, is there any possible way you could actually set up a defense line and show use using the actual models how you would achive these results. I am a visual person and it would help to see it in action.
Two questions:
1. Does the quadgun/lascannon have to be placed next to the aegis line?
2. Can a techmarine use bolster defense on the aegis line?
1. Technically not but you’d want it close enough that the line provides cover for anyone using it.
2. Bolster defences works on ruins specifically so no.
I was thinking for my next tournament of placing the gun inside a building at top level, or somewhere open enough for it to shoot, and have the techmarine bolster defense and man the gun.
In a proper game, the fortifications and accompanying gun emplacement are placed on the table before any other terrain pieces, so the choice is put the gun behind the Aegis or have it sitting out in the open somewhere. I supposed in tournaments where the terrain is placed (fixed) first, you could put the gun emplacement anywhere, but you’d be subject to the tournament organizer’s rules. They have to make up a house rule for placing fortifications anyway because of the “not within 3″ of other terrain” rule which would be unfair if your fortification couldn’t be placed in your… Read more »
Dark Angel bolster defences isn’t only ruins. (Making it a bit stupid that they gave it the same rule name).
You can upgrade any terrain – so you can build tree houses with your Dark Angels if your want. however their rule also specifies that you cant upgrade terrain taken as part of your army (so you still cant bolster aegis lines)
I think soon it will work on every piece of terrain – the new Dark angel book has allowed this now
Man the Quad gun with a Necron Triarch Stalker. The Stalkers “Targeting Relay” rule will make any model hit allow friendly units Twin-Linked shots at it, including fliers!
where’s the rule for the quad gun?
Pg 105, it’s a gun emplacement. Actual stats for the weapon are on 114.
Didn’t notice this..
However, I have taken a quad gun with Marbo, and use it against my opponents flyers!
Sisters of Battle Retributor squad is a great choice. They get rending with their successful faith check. Rending twin-linked quad-gun is pretty good. It’s not cheese, it’s just good!
@wildchevy and @cazboab, that’s the question I cannot get an answer to! WHERE must the quad gun go?I expected something along the lines of , within 2″ of the defense line, or some such thing, but there seems to be nothing about proximity?! I usually place mine either in base contact, or within an inch or two, but would love to know if I can put it on the top level of a building for clear line of sight to everything! 🙂
I agree. In the book, when the defence line is inclosed, the gun is not touching the emplacement at all. And when its snaked across the field, how far back or even forward can you place the quadgun?
You can put the gun emplacement anywhere you like in your deployment zone.
In a proper game, the fortifications and gun emplacements go on the table before other terrain, so the gun goes in the Aegis or in the open. In tournies, since the other terrain is often fixed, then you’d have to get the organizer to make the call (same goes for how to place a fortification so as to avoid other terrain since they’ve changed the proper placement order/rules).
Ok. Why is it that I love the idea of stealing your opponents quad gun?? Not stating “friendly” seems legit.
To be fair lads that’s the only part I did like. Tanks firing guns not mounted on them… Nah. Not even going to try and say “crew member hoped out and started shooting”. I think that one is implied. Even so I will DEFFINATLY be editing our house rules to says “any non-vehicle model”
Deltadragon.
I’ve actually did this at a throne of skulls Jan 13. Dante and his assault marines landed beside a quad gun shot the guard manning it on turn 2, and on turn 3 fired it at my opponents valkyrie. Great fun.
I actually heard about that aswell while I was there lol
Erm, how will you operate the gun if its already being operated, and how will you get in bsb if that opponent is around it.
And last but not least, inertial guidance system says that you must reduce the scatter by minimum to avoid it, avoid means not touching it as far as i know, and you require to touch it in order to use it.
The enemy purchased quad gun is not an enemy model. If possible you can still be on the other side of the gun and still be an inch away from the enemy model using it. Assuming there was no other enemy models obstructing your way to get to that one side of the quad gun. 2 opponents using the same weapon, well that’s where common sense vs puritan rulebook players clash. Cheese and sleaze doesn’t mean fair and square. @Beasts of War, I know alot of people are waiting for the Tau week and Cheese hunters is getting popular but… Read more »
Mordrak and belial can get into contact with it on turn 1 I reckon (Providing the the enemy aren’t close enough)
Ok, I haven’t commented on a video in ages, but I feel as though you guys are really starting to take the piss out of GW abit to much. And I’m saying this as supporters of yours. I think there is few people out there that would REALLY think you can park a Rino, Predator or Landraider, and somehow it grows arms and operates an independent unattached weapon. Sure it may well say “Any Model”, but I believe they are referring to any “Infantry Model”. Although I like Cheese hunters when someone manages to find a really good, solid piece… Read more »
Hah yeah this one seems to be pushing it a bit far, even the RAW states the model must be in base contact to use it, also a he. It’s pretty clear that a tank can’t use it.
A model needs a base to operate a quadgun (p105).
You need to be in base contact to use it.
No base, no shooting.
Most vehicles don’t have a base.
Flyer bases do not count as well, because in the flyer rules (p80) it sais that their base is ignored except for the purposes of assault and disembarking passengers.
