Bust out your Black Templar guys… they’re now 5th Edition!
January 15, 2011 by beerogre
Welcome news from the dark corridors of Games Workshop. It looks like the Inquisition have finally forced the scribes of the Administratum to release some eagerly awaited Codex updates.
Updates that bring a lot of those Marine chapters, who were languishing in "old Codex hell", bang up-to-date!
You can see the new FAQs here:
- 40K Rulebook (v.1.2)
- Black Templar (v.1.1)
- Blood Angels (v.1.1)
- Dark Angels (v.1.1)
- Space Marines (v.1.1)
- Space Wolves (v.1.1)
If you'll notice, the Daemonhunters and Witch Hunters didn't get an update. With the shock announcment that the Grey Knights Codex will be released in April (click here to read more on that), this is not surprising.
However, it does beg the question...
If the Black Templar and Dark Angels have been brought up to date with 5th Edition. Does this mean they will not be getting a new Codex this year?
What do you think guys?
Personally, I think this trashes any hope of a new DA or BT Codex anytime soon. However, that leaves the door wide open for the long awaited Necron reboot.
I think I can hear Darrell's ears twitching already!!!
BoW Andy
Edit - Just for completeness, there's also a Dark Eldar FAQ... you can see it here.
Enjoy!

Does anyone else think this is an awesome decision by GW? Obviously armies need new codexes and army books evey 3 years or so….creative FAQ’ing can definatly solve this.
So far I’ve been really impressed with the amount of support we’ve been getting from GW for 8th ed. The rulebook has had 3 updates since release…and some army books have had 4 updates.
Doesn’t fix everything and it’s by no means perfect, but man…..does it ever help.
Gah, of course, more Marine updates i’m getting tired of it, Necrons are still on their 3rd edition, update them, they need it (3rd Edition including Witchhunters and Daemonhunters, but seriously, who plays them). But back to it do Marines REALLY need more 5th Edition updates? first after normal Space Marines was Spacewolves, then Blood Angels, soon Grey Knights and now Black Templars? I thought that was the reason on having a massive Space Marine Codex to begin with, it includes its multi-ethnical love-children. They have been updated so much i’m surprized they aren’t high-fiving God at the moment. Yes… Read more »
Grey Nights are next and there are rumours that Necrons are not too far away.
Have heard similar rumours of Necrons getting a new update, heres hoping that they make some new plastic kits for the “elites” section of the range.
no way your being negative the Tau need a new codex and a love to see more troop choices for the Tau but I say the necrons are in a much needed update first tho.
and dont go negative thumbing people for them having a different view to your own!! p.s. he is right, well done sarukin – tell it as it is! OohRah
You know, I keep hearing this unwarranted Grey Knight hate. The Grey Knights DID need this update. It’s rather unfair to try to negate that by dismissing all the Daemonhunter/Witchhunter players. Tau may need a new codex, but they’re more playable. From what I understand, it is supposed to be Grey knights then Necrons then Sisters of Battle. Besides, there are only two other Space Marine Chapter Codexes left for them to update. Black Templars, and Dark Angels. And it doesn’t look like they’re going to update either any time soon. Which means that 2012 will probably be the year… Read more »
I really think they should streamline all these codecies. Why not have the space marines in one all encompassing codex that goes into a bit of history on the well known chapters and allows for imagination from the player to the others. That way, a player can just pick up one book and know all the little rules for all the chapters (And save some money along the way). This might also get the GW team motivated to update all the other codecies for Xeno races in order to get everyone up to date. I can understand that it’s a… Read more »
LOL GW save us money?
I agree though, that these seperate books are unneccesary and leads to massive amounts of different model, c’mon the’ve done 2/3 updates of the main SM codex and released about 4 seperate faction marines too!
with that amount of stupid revaming they could’da updated all those old outdated armies years ago
im glad of the update, it means they wont be have any new (completely unneccesary) codex in the near future – and necrons REALLY need one
For those who are moaning about Imperium, and SM stuff can I just point out two things here. 1)Imperium has the largest playerbase, whether you like it or not they are popular, so when you change something you start with what’s most popular, that’s basic business. 2)The two SM codexes here have a few things in common to be changed, hence they were probably done together so that bits could simply be copy-pasted to save time. I imagine the others are being worked on, it’s just a matter of time til they come out so everyone should be happy at… Read more »
Necrons, Tau, even the Eldar could probably use another update with some new models. Problem is, GW decided that their “cash crop” of space marines was the big seller and so devoted their time to upgrading the look and abilites of them. I do like Space Marines, and I’m in the process of creating my own chapter, but I’d like to have other armies to use in case I want to mix things up. That’s the great thing about GW, they give the player the opportunity to dabble in different stategic options to play the game. The problem is that… Read more »
totaly right bigbri, people worry about it so much, but in the end GW just love some armys more than others, like orcs and space marines, for expample. but i dont agree about the popular thing. yes they are the most played but since they are always in the lime light why shouldnt they be. no one places daemon hunters cus why would you, the list is so old its not even possable to play it anymore. look at DE not the biggest army in the 40k world, we all have to admit that. then a new codex and every… Read more »
We dont need another marine update before another xenos one. Tau and Necrons are in dire need of some help.
I’m suspecting that we will meet some new characters (with big swords) and that there power might be equal to the named BA characters, a new book or 2 and a cool vehicle or dreadnought.
I don’t know much about 40K, but I do know a bit about marketing. Does anyone remember that GW recently had a little share price snafu. What would you try to do to shore up your finances if that happened? How about pushing your most popular products? From my perspective, a new update to a Marine Codex… any Marine Codex… sells the basic Marine kits, plus it’ll sell the upgrade kits if it’s a specific chapter. Marine players buy Marines, they have lots of Marine bits and I have yet to meet one who is adverse to buying more Marines.… Read more »
I’ve got to say, I sure would like to see some new codex books for Tau and Chaos Space Marines, but of course I currently play Tau and have a bunch of CSM stuff waiting to be constructed and painted, so I’m biased. A Necron update would be pretty sweet, too. I’d love to see the tabletops covered with little robotic skeletons at my local store.
Yep it does leave it open for necrons and rumours going around would suggest that DA and BT are a while off. Frankly I play necrons at the moment and they need it the most, though tau are in need also lets hope both these xenos races get a good job done on them before the marines get their time again.
Well bugger. My BT Vinidcators still don’t get their Siege Shields, bugger. They look cooler with them on.
I think GW have done well with this and maybe updating SM codecies is just a bit of a first go.
Well done on this one. They’ve taken out the outdated rules and left the character. Interestign how only a couple of points values got changed.
yeah I remember when the ‘new’ vindicator kit came out with siege shields, it made/makes them look twice as good in my opinion.
TAU NEED NEW UPDATE !!!!1111
but ya GW is bieng cliché bij doeing a marine armey first.
last few years its always been: non marine armie , marine armie, non marine armie, marine armie, exetra exetra
Nice to see BT & DA get a boot to the new rules, but would’ve like to see a section allowing such list choices as the thunder cannon…
I agree, eldar, tau, and necrons sorely need a new codex. It would be a nice change, before we all drown under the tide of marines.
The thunderfire gun is something that doesent exacly fit either BT or DA, that said, if you want to use it, you just have to use the vanilla marine list.
one comment. People play marines cause they win. If all the books has a chance then i would play tau not spacewolves, my good buddy would play necrons instead of giving up on the game, and my local campaign would hav e 6 of 8 players playing marine variants… the other two are dark eldar BTW.
i mean my campaign would NOT have 6 of eight… sorry bout the misprint.
Thanks for the post
