Assaulting Units that are Falling Back in Warhammer 40K

More cheese from Darrell as he takes a look at a thoroughly dishonorable tactic... assaulting units that are already falling back.

I vote we get Darrell a new shirt. This looks really weird on the video
He’s in “character”
It’s not the shirt it’s the effect of the disrupton pods
You know how he likes to be true to all the fluff.
If the Stealers pass their test they rally and kill the drones and most likely the Crisissuits too,
moveing d6 inches after killing the drones 6 more in their movement step and 2d6 in assault.
That tactic can Backfire.
They will probably rally anyway if you don’t attack them, which will have pretty similar outcome.
The video showed it was worth the sacrifice of a couple of drones for the chance of the Genstealers failing their Ld roll again as they would be removed from the game as they are already falling back
But if they rally on their own, they cannot attack you that turn so you’d still get another turn shooting at them; whereas if you charge them and they rally then kill the drones they can then charge on their turn. (Or have I read this wrong?)
Can see this (good) tactic being more useful against units that are more likely to fail their test – not sure I see the benefit with higher Ld units 🙂
you are correct, if you let them rally in their turn they will get the 3 inch rally and no further movement of any sort. In this example you are much better off letting them rally in their turn than assaulting them.
The tactic itself is good, just the example stacks the odds against it actually working, probably due to being limited to what models they actually had in the studio, it would work better against a big block of low-mid LD troops like termagants or guard infantry
In the tau vs Genestealers scenario, it would be worth assaulting with the drones if you had marker lights that reduced their leadership value of the genestealers; as marker lights only last until the end of tau turn (unless of course they used their raw leadership values; I’m not familiar with the new rules yet). Of course this assumes that they are falling back from a combat they loss from tau, which is unlikely unless ur running Farsight.
While Daryl is right that the chance of failure is 1/12, he has to realize that the entire scenario working in your favor like that only stands 1/144 chance of happening, as those stealers have to fail once to break, then fail again on the assault to be removed. Unlikely to say the least. Best leave em be, get your suits moved back another 6” w/ their jetpacks, and hope for another turn or 2 of shooting.
