Assaulting Into Ruins
April 3, 2012 by darrell
It’s never enough to reduce your enemies’ buildings to rubble, you got to get in there and clear them out! With this in mind Darrell has a look at assaulting into ruins, but take note there are different rules for going into intact buildings.

great video Darrel, thanks! I have a couple of questions about something that happened to me the last saturday. I had one half of a tactical squad (I was proxying ultramarines and throwing the dice as Warren suggest XD) that had a heavy weapon in the top of a ruin like the one of your video, but the attackers were an assault terminator squad with 3 lightning claws and 2 hammer/shield. The questions are, my marines had to go first in that case anyway? and since the terminators had furious charge (I was playing against black templars) the lightning claws… Read more »
Nope they still assault at Int 1 “If a unit had to take a difficult or dangerous terrain test during their assault move, all of it’s models have their Initiative value lowered to 1, regardless of other initiative modifiers” From the assaulting through cover section (pg36 of the mini rules book)
Good video, cleared up some stuff for me. Though for me it usually involves walkers/monstrous creatures assaulting up ruins… talk about wobbly models!
Just remember cavalry, beasts, and bikes cannot climb ruins if I remember it right… can be helpful in some situations
Awesome! thanks Darrel 😀 perfect timing because I’m about to host a game with ruins and wasn’t totally sure how to assault through them.
One of the few things newcomers need to learn carefully, and need to enforce in my group. We have many ruins on our tables.
Good job Darrell, informative as usual, this will help a lot of us in the future I guess, quick query tho, does this rule work with Walkers such as Dreadnoughts? I once assaulted a group of Nid warriors in a ruin from the ground with my dreadnought, another player told me I didn’t need to take the assault test due to the dreadnought being as high as the platform that the Nids were on. Is this true?
hey sessau, yes you would still need the test as ruins count as difficult terrain, so you would need to see if you reached the Nids.
Wow, darrell and I both have the same Scout. Spooky.
Da Orks be choppin’ da floor boardz and get dem Oultree Mareen Boyz down to da louwa’ leva’ so dey kan get to da choppin’! An’ da Orks kan stand on each owas shouldaz to get to da uppa’ leva’, eh? Well if ya say no den itz NO. Bu’ I say if ya get to da fightin’ wif dem boiz on louwa’ leva’ I’d say dem boiz on uppa’ leva’ would “drop” to da louwa’ leva’ wif dem Orky boiz
We had some discussions about what happens if the unit that is charged is not completely in area terrain. What happens then? Do you need to roll for difficult terrain or not? Does it depend on how much of the enemy unit’s models are in terrain?
Hey nice video Darrel but what if you cant fit your assaulting unit on the floor directly below either due to no room for them can they still assault from 2 floors down cause that would seem cheezy or do you have to wait for models to die to make room for them ?
Cheers!
That explains it all. Tis a tricky little blighter of a grey area.
Im now intregued by the ‘if it doesnt have a base its not a ruin’ statement, lol.
I wouldnt think a walker could scale a ruin could they?
Jolly battle!
So just to make this clear, anytime you assault into a ruin, your models are Initative 1? So genestealers assaulting my grey hunters in ruins are striking last? Also, can i just check we were right in our judgement in this senario? 6 man Long Fang pack at top of bastion, Carnifex and Hive Tyrant wish to assault them from landing pad next door, there was clearly no space for either to be placed on the bastion roof. Should they have been allowed to assault the Long Fangs? We judged no because neither Tyrand is in the same building as… Read more »
i wock your videos every day and i need some help deling with grey knight terminators/ paladins with halberds with my dark eldar army. when i shoot (kabalite mostly) when i asolt (wyches or incubi mosly). the incubi can kill with power wepons but bo invulnerable save but wyches live with dodge but cant kill so what unit in the codex can deel with then. so do you asolt or shoot?
“Distances between models are on different levels are measured between the heads of the models on the lower level to the bases of the models on the upper levels”
So, as long you already have at least 1 model on the same level(or otherwise counting as being in b2b contact) all models directly underneath it will be able to assault regardless of your difficult terrain roll, as they count as being within 2 inches of a model in b2b (unless, of course, your model is under an inch tall)
