Fantasy Flight Games Celebrate 30th Anniversary Of Star Wars RPG
August 17, 2017 by thisisazrael
Fantasy Flight Games have announced that forty years since A New Hope hit big screens and thirty years since its original release that Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game is getting an Anniversary Edition.
"First published in 1987 by West End Games, Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game arrived at a time when the future of the Star Wars galaxy was uncertain. The original trilogy had been completed. There were no plans for additional films. It was as if a hundred million voices had cheered at the Rebellion's triumph and then suddenly went silent…"
As we know today, the Star War universe spans several movies, cartoons, comics, games and much more, yet there is still plenty of exploration to be done.
The two book set comes as hardbound tomes that contain all the original game rules, information, and graphic design.
FFG has moved to a higher quality paper and you'll find both books in a slipcase with original cover art but other than this the books remain largely unchanged from their predecessors.
With the Star Wars RPG Rules, you'll be able to embark on your own "operatic space adventures".
The system offers fast d6-based actions and comes with its own adventure "Rebel Breakout" to give you something to get stuck into immediately.
To support the creation of your personal part of the galaxy you'll also get The Star Wars Sourcebook as part of the set.
The sourcebook gives you a huge amount of information to flesh out your own adventures from details on aliens, droids and capital ships to blasters, combat vehicles and of course lightsabers.
Details you'll find in the sourcebook have actually become part of the Star Wars canon such as names for alien races like Quarren, Rodian and Twi'lek.
The section on "Designing Adventures" has also be cited by Pablo Hidalgo as inspiration for the core writing he developed for the Lucasfilm Story Group.
One of the few changes that you will find in the set is actually a foreword from Pablo Hildago which brings together the original Star Wars RPG and where we are now with our current appreciation of the Star Wars Universe.
You can pre-order the set now for its release in Q4 2017.
What role would you take on in the Star Wars universe?

Other games companies with landmark anniversaries, take note – THIS is how you celebrate it 😛
It’s 30th year anniversary for West End Games’ Star Wars RPG? Nice.
While this is not my favourite edition of the Star Wars RPG it is both well regarded and importantly, the first Star Wars system I played. Often your first campaign in a given system will sell you on it for life or turn you off it completely and luckily for me, our WEG campaign at university was a lot of fun and highly memorable; For that reason alone, I will have to pick up a copy of this!
Ownership of the WEG Imperial and Rebel sourcebooks are a must regardless of what version of the RPG you’re playing
Truer words never spoken, @darthcheese – I have the original RPG and source book in hardcover still. My Imperial and Rebel Alliance sourcebooks fell apart years ago, but I still have them in .pdf.
Favorite part of the Imperial Source Book was the two-page artwork with all the size comparisons for the different Imperial starships. The Imperial star destroyer naturally took up the whole two-page spread. But they also had the Executor class super star destroyer, who’s profile went on for another six pages (8 in all). 😀 😀
The adverts got joining the Imperial navy etc were fun as well
The section about Compnor was clearly based on the SS but I loved the whole state within a state theme.
Yep, @torros – those were great. @darthcheese – I also used to get a Soviet “Komsomol” vibe off those COPNOR recruiting posters.
Perhaps the best part was all the Ralph McQuarrie concept art left over from movie pre-production finally put to proper use. 😀
Your so right about the game sells you on for life or not. That was me with D&D.
OMG , MINE MINE MINE
Aha, I still have these books. 😀 West End Games, of course.
looks interesting.
Guys, don’t forget about;

This has all the pdfs for 1st and 2nd WEG Star Wars; great for reading on a reader ( I am a proud owner of the original books too, A great RPG STSYEM)
wait ,did you just say STAR WARS hardback collectors edition ? yes please
It’s up on rebelscum.com as well. they’re going to make a small fortune with this. there will be a lot of love in the STAR WARS community for this, even for those who haven’t heard the name westend games in a long time.
Was a great game
This may sound odd but my wife until a few years ago never seen any Star Wars movies beside one of the prequel movies. So talking about any reference to them just got blank stares.
I didn’t even know about this game and wished I did as I really did and still do like the movies. I may have been a bit young for RPG when this was released.
@oriskany I wonder what happened to Ken Rolston and Greg Costikyan
My favorites are the pirates & Privateers supplements and the Platts Guides with the artwork from Chris Gosset.
So many nice memories. Mastered it with ages from 10 to 30.
For every Star Wars Fan a good read, when you want to know specifics.
Some fun memories of this, could be tempted. Wookies were insanely cool
