Andy’s First 40K Tournament
January 7, 2012 by beerogre
That's right! Today Andy plays his first 40K tournament EVER!
Darrell has persuaded me to go to the superb Arkham Gaming Centre to play in their Dominion Day Tournament.
It's a day of 1000pt matches... 5 in all, plated on 4'x4' tables... where competators will battle it out for a very grand prize!
If you've seen our videos about the event, you'll know the rules for the day are pretty strict.
You have 1000pts... you must take 1 HQ and 2 Troop choices... but you can't take more than 1 of any particular unit!
This also means you can't take "sounds like" units. So Venerable Dreadnoughts and ordinary Dreadnoughts are considered to be the same thing as are Land Raider variants and all that jazz.
I'll be playing Grey Knights and my list will consist of:
- HQ -
"The Black Knight" - Grey Knight Grand Master
- Master Crafted Storm Bolter
- Master Crafted Nemesis Force Sword
- Psykotrope Grenades
- Rad Grenades
- Elites -
Tech Marine
- Psykotrope Grenades
- Rad Grenades
- Servoskull (x2)
- Storm Bolter
- Troops -
Grey Knight Terminators
X1 - Terminator Justicar
- Master Crafted Nemesis Force Sword
- Master Crafted Storm Bolter
x3 - Grey knight Terminators
- Nemesis Force Sword
X1 - Grey Knight Terminator
- Nemesis Daemon Hammer
- Psycannon
+4 - Grey Knight Terminators
- Nemesis Force Sword
+1 - Grey Knight Terminator
- Nemesis Daemon Hammer
- Psycannon
Grey Knight Strike Squad
x1 - Grey Knight Justicar
- Nemesis force Halberd
x4 - Grey Knights
- Nemesis Force Halberd
+3 - Grey Knights
- Nemesis Force Halberd
The pics are of my terminators, painted using the "Romain Darmon Patented Speed Painting Technique"... well the Black Knight wasn't speed painted, but the others were... It's just a pity I didn't get more finished!
So far, Darrell's list has remained top secret... but I'll make sure to post it as soon as I can.
I'll be taking my camera with me, so expect a video about our day very soon.
Feel free to savage my list... but remember... you can only have one unit of each type. So posting that I should have more termies is pointless.
If I could have more, I would have as many as I could!
Good luck to all on the day...
-- Update --
Well, what a great day... a long day... but a great one!
We started at 9:30am and went right through to 10:00pm, playing 5 games.
I started out badly, then got a great result in the Kill Points mission. Slid back a bit then got pipped at the post in the last Victory Point Annihilation game... 12pts in it... damn those cheap-assed Orks!
Congratulations to the winners and all the players. Thanks to the guys at Arkham for making it great day and to Jonny for organising the event. Thanks also have to go to Phil from Arkham who kept 34 players fed and watered with runs to the chippy and sandwich shop... 5 games takes lots of calories to maintain!
The trophy was won by the mighty Yan with his unstoppable Orks... some might say the trophy was delivered with his name already engraved on it... however, these accusations have not been verified.
Here's the final results and the armies used. Darrell and I will film a video of our experiences and we'll show you guys some pictures of the day.
Cheers all!
Watch out for the next get-together... Winter War!

Alright, I’m going to pick on a list of someone who’s just started 40k (I think?) and is going to his first tournament. Personally, I’d drop the techmarine… It’s a nice model, but he’s a bit waste points in your list. I think you must get one more termie, otherwise you’ve got a false list: 9 terms 2 psycannons. Then, I’d also take some more halberds, having some better invuls is great, but you don’t have to take a whole squad with forceswords. Also, you can’t go wrong with a deamon hammer in the strike squad. So, what I’d do… Read more »
… O, sorry. Have to add: Good luck!
good luck andy i hope oyu beat darrell mthat wil destroy his spirit
Good luck Andy
I look forward to the report later
You can do this. That’s odd, I thought you did a few before. I myself only did a tournament once and that was way back in the day. I gave up after my fluff based army died to a space wolf list in one round 🙁
One of us….one of us…
Good luck in your first tourney andy. I love those restricyions, thinking that I might runn a little thing at my club based on them.
Best of luck, Andy !
Looking forward to seeing the vid. 🙂
Good luck Andy, show them how the game is played.
interesting set of restrictions. good job the necron codex got an update then 🙂
good luck andy, hope it goes well for you.
just realized me mentioning the necron codex sounds weird lol. i meant because the old dex only had 1 troops so they couldn’t participate legally but i still can’t work out why i mentioned it when andy is clearly playing GK.
Good luck, Andy. Try and have fun, sometimes tournaments can be a little stressful. As a fellow 40k noob, my suggestion is to look at it as a learning experience. I’ve got another 400-point 40k Combat Patrol tourney coming up in two weeks. I’ll try to remember to take my camera with me again.
Andy, good luck!!!
Best piece of advice I can give is to ask your opponent after each round “Is there anything I could have done better?”
raggbur is right Andy this list is illegal unless you get another terminator.
Yep… my actual list has another Terminator with a Nemesis Force Sword.
Fortunately the list I sent in was correct. I’ve added the other termie above.
I like the little bull dog peeping out behind your leader. 😉
The Dwarf Throwing Mastiff from Mantic. Probably the best sprue filler ever made by any company ever.
Ah you’re a beardy Andy, you will do fine. You may have problems with horde armies, but I know you will have fun regardless! And wildchevy is right on.. but then you know all this, you are a Warmachine veteran so… Have a blast! And don’t let the WAACs get you down.
I do like the idea of no unit more than once. It’d prevent spam if nowt else.
Would squadrons be out under those rules though? I’m assuming no as it’s ‘one unit’. What about dedicated transports for squads?
Sorry to interrogate!
Just looked at the list. Not a single Dark Eldar player.
Sisters? With the WD dex ?
Btw, something happend to darrell? Probably some technical failure in the cheese mine.
Probably a bottle of something alcoholic ‘happened’ to Darrell lol
No alcoholic was involved in my poor result. I think that the lack of may have been the problem.
Haha I just pitched this to my local 40k heavy gaming club. It was dismissed as “Stupid spam-ophobic nonsense”, and thats them being polite. I don’t share that view.
Oh yeah, because Spamming makes for a fun game… 😛 no offence to anyone… but honestly?
those tournament restrictions are kind of stupid. I see there was one, but how are you supose to play black templars? We only have one troop choice (crusader squad) so in order to have two troop choices we’d have to use an illegal list.
-Nathan Morrill (WarlordEXE)
Well, i kind of like the idea of these limitations, tho if organized it id allow the two troop choices to be of the same sort of unit. Im guessing tho that if somone had asked the organizers they probably would allow it for armies that has that problem, tho from the top of my head i dont think theres that many left whit only one troop choice.
“Bye Buster” and his CSM are going to give you trouble.
“Darrell and I will film a video of our experiences and we’ll show you guys some pictures of the day.”
Only if you have backstage that is…….
Grey knoghts are broken big time but i collect so i dont care (its funny cause my friends wont play me but i use eldar and still table them) lol so funny
