A Black Libraries Worth Of Codices Announced For Warhammer 40,000
September 14, 2020 by avernos
It's been a busy weekend for Games Workshop with a whole Thunderhawk Gunships worth of releases announced for Warhammer 40,000. For the bookish types amongst us they have dropped the virus bomb that in the last three months of 2020 they won't be releasing one new Codex, or even two, Instead six Codices are due before the sweet relief of 2021 takes us out of the year, so let's take a look at what to expect.
Codex Space Marines // Games Workshop
First out of the blocks and surprising nobody at all will be the new Space Marine Codex. This book will have not only the rules and lore for every first founding chapter but will also include their successor chapters as well. That's not going to be a small Codex then by any means. Apart from the Ultramarines there are rules for the Angels of Death, Space Wolves and even the Death Watch!
The new codex has also consolidated many of the rules that first made an appearance in the various Psychic Awakening books. The Chapter Command rules are one such example, meaning you’ll be able to upgrade one of your Chapter’s Chaplains, Librarians, Techmarines, and a variety of other Characters to the head of their order, but at a small cost in Power or points instead of using a Stratagem.
They are also using the Codices to expand upon the narrative campaign rules that first featured in 9th edition, and one that they have shown off allows you to inter a wounded character into a Dreadnought rather than lose them to their injuries!
Crusade Requisition // Space Marines
The Space Marines are not alone in getting a new book to kickstart the 9th edition though, the other big hitter that will be arriving shortly is for the other half of the starter sets, Codex Necrons.
Codex Necrons // Games Workshop
Big changes are afoot for the race that puts the fun into (f)undead in the 41st Millenium as the army special rule is changing right off the bat. Command Protocols and Dynastic Codes will let you tailor your Necron force on the tabletop around your Necron Noble. If your army of Necrons all hails from the same dynasty and is led by a Character with the Noble keyword, then at the start of the game, you can secretly assign one of six command protocols to utilise during each battle round. After revealing your selected command protocol, you’ll need to choose which directive you will activate. Any of your units within 6″ of your Characters will then benefit from that directive. With careful strategy and forethought, command protocols can really throw off your opponent while giving you a massive advantage.
Don't worry though you don't have to build your own Dynasty from scratch if you don't want to, the Necron lore is being expanded massively with the return of the Silent King from his self-imposed exile and with him the Szarekhan Dynasty. This return has not been welcomed by all within the Necrons and the reappearance is causing something of a crisis of faith within many houses.

Inside the Codex you can also look forward to the stunning art and lore that Games Workshop are famous for, expanding the background of the Necrons, introducing a range of new units and characters to run alongside existing forces and of course faction-specific Agendas, Requisitions, Battle Traits, Crusade Relics and, in the case of the Necrons, even Dynastic Epithets – bespoke titles that offer unique upgrades or abilities, to further expand on the narrative play for your Necrons as they reclaim their ancient worlds.
Future Codex Teases
Apart from the massive Necron and Space Marine news a trailer was dropped that before the end of 2020. No information beyond the titles so far but we will see Codex Space Wolves, Blood Angels, Death Watch and Codex: Deathguard for the heretics this year. The wheels are back on the machine after the summer shut down and 40K juggernaut is ploughing ahead full speed this year.
Will you be launching a Crusade?

Still waiting for orky stuff
Sadly for Xenos players they need to wait for next year for new codeces.
based on the 6 codices in 3 months schedule it will be somewhere inside the 36 releases next year I’m sure 😉
So new ork kodex just before 10th edition then?
I noticed that there is nothing about data cards being released at same tme with new codeces.
you’re right … but then this is kind of the first reveal/teasing of contents.
There may be datacards and similar limited edition printed tat once the release dates are announced.
Its no surprise that nearly all the first releases are Space Marines. That was almost always a given. It is nice that they aren’t trickling them out though, getting them all out now and fast is great for players of other armies. I am most interested in the Necron Codex, as it is the one to set the tone for the rest of the non marine armies. If it can stand on par with the SMs, then I will be back into 40k. If not, then I just will continue to collect interesting cool models and not play.
I’m not sure if those few expansion codexes were even needed, especially with the DIY chapter rules (taken from previous SM codex).
I would rather see major codexes for all factions before the sub-factions got there stuff.
Ooh nice is the marines codex replacing the codex book’s that they just realised the end of last year/beginning of this year?
Was watching the CM Valrak post ‘codex show’ break down of the new SM rules and even he was saying he thought they were massively broken and that he may struggle to find a game with non SM players in the future. I must admit that I was hyped with the new release of 40K but after hearings the new rules for SM (which sounded like what a 9 year old would give there bestest faction) the indomitus box is now in the loft (attic) and I’m painting Bolt Action Africa Korps. I’ve not given up on the game yet… Read more »
Toughness 5 troops with 3 wounds each, surely that’s “fluffy” for the space marines 😉
Then we better hope they never get bunnie slippers or they’ll be invincible
Just agree to an old version, makes the job a good un.
Is it just me, or do the appearance of these Codices look 10 years out-of-date graphically?
That’s the sun bleached old comic book look … it’s the hot new style for the grim dark future.
So no, that’s not just you. It’s me as well.
I hope the art looks better in real life.
So does this new Space Marine Codex do away with all the space marine supplement chapter mini codices that came out last year (Raven Guard, Salamanders etc)? And are the Blood Angels and Space Wolves codices supplements or full independent codices?
N.B. This is why I gave up on 40K. I just don’t have the energy to keep up. I will still collect the HH novels and by one or two figures for painting pieces and dioramas – but that is it for me.
It does say that special chapters like Blood Angels get codex supplements meaning that they will need basic SM codex.
You’d think that they could create one big space marine codex and be done with it this year. nope … the ‘special’ expansion codexes will be there too. It’s in another news item (Space wolves, Blood Angels and Death something) each get theirs and to make it even worse : they get it ‘soon’. We haven’t had a peep about anything other than Deathguard and them Necrons. I also wouldn’t be surprised if damn spacemarines got another codex like they did last time. I wish GW spend equal time on all factions instead of just the one (you can build… Read more »
I’m still playing 2nd edition 40k. I like to get my money’s worth out of my purchases.
Those Blood Angels are awesome looking!
I cant wait for this Necron Codex. That specific Dynasty they show off seems to be quite powerful with those rules.
So, all of the new codecies will feature powered armor marines (oh, and Necrons who happen to have a 3+ save)?
Some people wonder why I think the ‘average’ stuff on the 40k tabletop is all the “super elite like you would not believe” stuff in the fluff.
WOOT Death Watch! Should be interesting to see how they are going to make all the Space Marines Chapters feel different in this edition.
I do have to wonder, for the Necrons, what Dynastic Agents are. For they are not considered Necrons for the power example above.
