The Saxon Lady Of Mercia Gets Sculpted By Matthew Bickley
February 4, 2020 by brennon
Footsore Miniatures & Games' Andy Hobday has been showing off a new miniature which has been sculpted up by Matthew Bickley. Here we have the stunningly realised Æthelflæd, Lady Of The Mercians.
Æthelflæd was a pretty impressive character from the Dark Age period. She was the eldest daughter of Alfred The Great and commanded great respect from the men and women of Mercia who fought against the incursions of Viking armies and more. She took up a prominent role in the politics of her kingdom alongside Æthelred and even took over much of the work when he fell ill and died.
If you like the idea of Æthelflæd also taking to the battlefield then you can also get a mounted version of her too.
Now that is very, very cool indeed. I love the idea of her mounting up in the style of Eowyn (or most likely the other way around of course) and charging off into battle alongside her men as the Lady Of The Mercians. She has a very deadly look to her sculpt, unflinching in the need to hack down her foes and secure her borders for the good of Alfred and the English.
What do you make of this new model that popped up this week?

The mounted figure is stunning and so is the other. Mr Bickley is a very talented individual.
I prefer the dismounted one, it looks more like a queen. The mounted one, especially with the full face helmet, just seems a little more ambiguous. A bit like what’s name in LOTR, like she’s disguised as a man. But this dismounted version is pretty special; I don’t really play historical wargames but I will probably buy this miniature because it is that good.
Eowyn 😉
Yes, her
very nice looking figures.
Oh brilliant. Æthelflæd was an absolute kickass queen. I’m definitely picking up both.
Awesome models!
I’m wondering if the mounted pose is meant to be an homage to the late, great Angus McBride’s illustration of the Lady of the Mercians from the old Women Warlords book (pre-Osprey -if I recall). The mini is holding an ax, while the painting has her wielding a sword, but in every other aspect it seems to be the same pose.
Really like the Lady on foot, i’ll have to watch for it when it’s available
