Daniel D. Fox and his team have taken to Kickstarter to fund a brand new Starter Kit for Zweihander, their Fantasy Horror RPG. Are you tempted to snap this one up?

The idea behind this particular Kickstarter is that they are aiming to create a great entry point for anyone to dive into Zweihander. There are a fair few options for this game out there in the wild that approach the Fantasy Horror RPG idea from a different angle. So, it makes sense to now have a Starter Kit that offers up some great options for new players.

Zweihander Starter Kit Checklist

You've got the dice, gamemaster's screen, maps, character folios, fortune and misfortune tokens and a big deck of cards that should aid the flow of gameplay. There is also a Black Box version of the Starter Kit which is a little bit more expensive but comes with a canvas map, campaign coin fortune tokens and all of the stretch goals that have been unlocked so far.

One of the interesting things about Zweihander is that it started out as a way to fill the gap left by Fantasy Flight Games and Games Workshop in the wake of earlier editions of Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play. Whilst most of that DNA still exists in the world of Zweihander, the team has also tried to make this game its own entity.

To that end, they are drawing inspiration from further afield and worlds like that of Dark Souls and even anime like Berserk. It's still a D100 system packed with brutality, intrigue, backstabbing and blood but has now been designed as a backdrop for you to tell a very distinct story if you like.

Zweihander Session Zero Kit

This kit works as an introduction to the themes and ideas of Zweihander. It features a how-to-play chapter, character creation guide, twelve iconic professions, character sheets and more. A solid option alongside the actual Starter Kit that is on Kickstarter right now.

As someone who really likes Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play and those themes, Zweihander is certainly one of those roleplaying games that has always been in the corner of my eye. I think I'll download that Session Zero kit and take a look at it in more detail.
