A Tyranny Of Dungeons & Dragons Coming This Summer
January 24, 2014 by brennon
The new edition of Dungeons & Dragons is coming this summer, the 5th Edition of the role-playing game. This weekend in fact marks the anniversary of the game! At the heart of this new edition is an epic new adventure, Tyranny of Dragons.
The adventure will centre around the dragon god, Tiamat who has taken to her temple and is spreading fear and destruction across the land. Players will be taking on a mass of dragons led by the God in a pretty epic struggle.
Of course what form this will take is ever changing. I imagine we'll be seeing the storyline pop up in books, board games, role-playing modules and more. I like that at the heart of it this really 'is' Dungeons & Dragons. Heroes fighting against...well, dragons!
This is all set within the world of Forgotten Realms so I would imagine this is going to be the main setting for D&D 5th Edition.
I can't wait for the new edition!

Aaaah… it brings back memories of a misspent youth, I still have my box sets from the 90’s in a crate in the loft. Just the smell of my old Dungeon Master’s handbook brings back a flood of memories 🙂
I will always have a soft spot for D&D. I hope this new edition is a success for Wizards of the Coast.
I’m all about Pathfinder now, but I am still intrigued by the new D&D…
While we play mostly pathfinder now, it is a rules heavy game. So it is interesting to see the end results of d&d next.
We dabbled a bit in the early days of the playtest, and liked the simpler rules.
The later editions of the D&D Next playtest didn’t get too cumbersome. It kept the same combat structure but character abilities got cleaned up as the playtests progressed.
I’ll have to see what the new edition is like. I bought the three core books for 4:th but after having read them I became disgusted so I closed them and continued with 3.5. I hope 5:th edition is much better than 4th.
After the final playtest package arrived in Sept, my test group has been cautiously optimistic. At the end of the day. whether you like it or not will be based on whether the system does what you want it to. D&D Next has a lot less ‘table tactics’ than 4th and is a lot less complicated than 3.5.
The big win for me with D&D Next was that you could actually play it in Minds Eye. No need for miniatures and tiles which was always a big drain on your planning and such with D&D 4E.

It’s amazing how changing rules in a drastic way can put people off from it and make them move to other games. Grant it Pathfinder really does seem like the old 3rd ed just updated.
D&D Next is very elegant as it keeps things simple and gives you the choice of how much more you want to add so your group can play at whatever level of commitment you like. Having seen it evolve through the playtest and been a cynic at the outset as I am a 2nd and 3rd ed fan I have to say I am now a convert in every way. I have been rolling up character after character to simply see what cool combinations of race, class and kit can do and am still going as right now waiting to… Read more »
