Tell Tall Tales With Modiphius’ Unique Discworld Roleplaying Game
October 16, 2024 by brennon
Modiphius are now on Kickstarter right now with their new project looking to bring Terry Pratchett's Discworld RPG: Adventures In Ankh-Morpork to life. Featuring a uniquely Pratchett-esque set of mechanics that suit Discworld, you can dive in and start telling your strange tales.
Discworld: Adventures In Ankh-Morpork // Modiphius
Adventures In Ankh-Morpork is a brand new Discworld tabletop roleplaying game which has been designed to suit the world that Sir Terry Pratchett crafted over numerous books. You will be able to dive into Ankh-Morpork, the Big Wahoonie, and tell stories that are rich with wit, humour and plenty of satire and puns for good measure.
Discworld: Adventures In Ankh-Morpork Corebook // Modiphius
This campaign is looking to fund the production of both the Corebook but also additional sourcebooks and adventure books and a range of accessories like dice trays and more. Renowned Discworld artist, Paul Kidby, has also been involved in producing some gorgeous art that now adorns the cover of the Collector's Edition (see above).
Tales From The Big Wahoonie // Modiphius
As a game, Discworld: Adventures In Ankh-Morpork allows you to take on the role of anyone you like from the Disc. You can play Dwarfs, Trolls, Golems, Gargoyles or maybe just a regular old human. You can take on the role of members of The Watch, assassins, wizards, sausage salesmen, thieves and many more besides. The (Disc)world is your oyster.
Mechanically, the game also suits Discworld. Very simply, you and the GM compare dice whenever there is a chance for something to fail. The players will justify their actions using traits that they come up with in character creation. The GM will then work out what dice you should roll based on your swindling and you'll then roll against their Narrativium die (a d8).
Octarine Dice // Modiphius
If you beat the GM, well done! If you don't you can Get Help which could mean that you pass your test OR make things go very, very badly. It's a very simple system and one that I feel works well with the more story-focused adventures from Discworld. It also gives the players a lot of agency and means that they can really twist things. Luck can also be used to reduce the consequences of your actions! Puns and witty use of the English language are also encouraged to foil the GM!
If you want to see how this all works, check out the Quickstart Guide which gives you a great adventure to play out alongside pre-made characters.
Death's Dice Tray // Modiphius
Once you've had a play around and considered your options, you can dive in and pledge for the Kickstarter right now. You can go in at a lower level and just get the PDF version of the rules (and associated sourcebooks etc) OR you can get physical books, accessories, special dice, dice trays and more.
I think that Modiphius' team has done a superb job on this roleplaying game and it feels very, very Discworld. I can't wait to give the game more of a go myself and see what the full Corebook has to offer.
Are you going to be diving in and snapping up this roleplaying game?

The one thing that maybe makes me buy this: it’ll be available in German. But delivery is 2025 so I might just wait until it it’s retail.
Ausgezeichnet!
I fear though, that the game’s emphasis on twisting the language Pratchett style will make it a bit, shall I say, hard in German.
I have the quickstart and a fan of Prachett novels. Owned the gurps edition, but it was not right rules for the setting.
In principle I like the game mechanics as they work for the setting… however… they are very scant on details and you need the right players to make it work… heavy on roleplay and thinking on your feet does not suit everyone.
As the likely GM, I’m not sure it would fit with my group, but any game that promotes Prachett and is not 5e is something that I hope is successful.
I’ve backed it and am excited to see where the campaign goes.
