Spellcrow Resculpt A Rather Deadly Looking Knight
May 28, 2014 by brennon
Spellcrow have added another miniature preview to Facebook for the near future and Umbra Turris. See what you think of this human, vampire, a bit of both?
The miniature has been planned for a long time but this change tweaked the sculpt overall and added a big cloak to the back. It's a shame we don't get to see the rear of the miniature as well. He certainly looks like either some evil mastermind or an anti-hero for the tabletop. A great possible Vampire for your undead armies or a dungeon boss to pit against your heroes.
Another nice stylised sculpt for Spellcrow that keeps within their overall look and feel and would suit the rest of their range well.
What do you think?

Cartoon vampire with big gangly gorilla arms, thick cape and stiff pose… This one is not for me, thanks. It’s like GW twenty years ago…
That’s exactly what I was going to say, it seems like there’s a chasm opening up between a lot of the smaller companies that have been around for a while, who are still releasing minis that look like they’re from the 90’s, and the bigger/newer companies like wyrd, corvus belli, etc. who are still improving and pushing their sculptors to get creative.
Still, these companies that are releasing very retro minis seem to be doing fine, so there’s obviously people who like them.
Nope, I don’t think so. It really depends on the company… Look at Mierce, look at independent sculptors like Thomas David, look at Imbrian Arts… look at the Kigdom Death range, and tell me these are big companies !
Mantic is a big company and their plastics have never been that good… Studio McVey have decreased a lot in quality as they’ve grown in importance with Sedition Wars…Foundry haven’t improved, but haven’t faltered either. GW have improved their plastics, but not much else… There’s no real rule !
The only ones who have improved are Corvus Belli (still that excellent quality control).
Fair point, I was generalising a bit too much.
Got to agree, not one I would pick up
He looks like he would tip of you pushed him. Think I’ll pass. If you need to try and fix something with a cloak I think you’re better off starting over.
Considering Spellcrow have managed to put out some decent minis this is just another swing and a miss. Still, it might fit in with my original HeroQuest minis…
I can understand why they sculpted it that way, it must be very easy to cast and therefore minimize their moulding costs. But the final result… probably is what elromanozo wrote above…
ok its not the greatest sculpt but spellcrow do some fantastic minis/parts for 40k and always(well both my orders) throw in xtra stuff with good delivery times/prices
