Darrington Press has now made their new roleplaying game, Daggerheart, available for you to download and playtest at home as part of their public beta for the game. Putting a twist on your Fantasy adventures, Daggerheart is looking packed with promise but that's where you come in. Playtest can make the game better!

Downloads for Daggerheart can be found HERE where you can get your hands on the full rules for the new roleplaying game alongside specific files dedicated to players and storytellers. Whichever way you're going to be approaching Daggerheart, there is a way for you to start learning and exploring the options available to you.
Alternatively, or in tandem, there is also the Daggerheart Nexus over on Demiplane and you can also access the playtest material through DriveThruRPG if you prefer.

For those interested in learning more about Daggerheart, Critical Role have put together a series of videos that look at the basics of gameplay, how you generate a character, a session zero where an entire party is build and there is a full one-shot where the crew take the game out for a spin.

From watching through most of the videos now from Critical Role, I'm very onboard with the character creation and the way that Daggerheart allows you to explore all sorts of different options. You can make some really awesome characters in the game that come from all sorts of different lineages and character classes are just as diverse. You can really go to town and once you've chosen all sorts of special abilities and such, your character is unlikely to be very similar to any other you might come across.

When it comes to the mechanics of Daggerheart, the game makes use of all manner of poly dice but it mainly revolves around the rolling of d12s that represent Hope and Fear. If you succeed on a roll with Hope being higher then you get points in the resource (Hope) to use when activating abilities and the like. If you roll with Fear being higher then that generates a separate resources that the storyteller can use to do all sorts of deadly things to do throughout the campaign.
Do not be put off by the rather hefty rules document from Daggerheart. I opened it and say 300 plus pages and yes...it was quite daunting. However, after watching the videos you can probably cruise through it and start playing your first quick adventure and learn as you go. It seems complicated but the actual core of gameplay feels like it should flow nicely.
Are you tempted to dive Daggerheart a go?

This is not a document I’d recommend releasing to the public, because the average consumer simply isn’t ready to be an actual play tester. The mechanics feel a bit contrived, altough it does allow for a “resurrect” spell that is very very rare. This ties in with the concept of disabilities being a real thing within this setting. You can’t just “wish” it away to get rid of the slight inconvenience of being blinded. Something like a combat wheelchair (they even got a designer for this… Read more »
