Marvel Launching Official Multiverse Role-Playing Game
June 8, 2021 by brennon
Marvel has announced that they are working on an official role-playing game for their comic book universe. The Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game is going to be getting a playtest release next year in 2022 so you can dive in and play as your favourite superheroes.
Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game // Marvel
This new roleplaying game comes from Matt Forbeck and will allow you to play as some of the mightiest heroes from the Marvel universe and build your own character. Maybe you'll be able to start telling your own stories and join the Avengers in their struggles against all manner of interesting supervillains.
The book will include rules for playing as Spider-Man, Black Panther, Captain America, Thor, Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, Wolverine, Storm and loads more. I do like the idea of playing as one of these characters and seeing just what they can do.
This new roleplaying game will also use a new system called the D616 System (I see what they did there). It has been designed to be accessible and easy to learn for new players with plenty of depth for those who want to take it further. You'll use the statistics of Might, Agility, Resilience, Vigilance and Logic to win the day and force down terrible odds.
As mentioned above, this is going to be part of a Playtest book which you'll be able to pick up in 2022. You'll then be able to offer feedback to the team behind the game ahead of its full release in 2023.
I am all for giving this a go!

I’ll keep my I on this. I already played some marvel-campaigns, but always adjusted existing systems.
Not easy to have rules for telepathy, superstrength, magic and what not and have it feel balanced.
Curious how they’ll do that, seeing as you’re getting to play existing characters and some of those are God-tier.
Also curious what characters will be available. I’m already impatiently waiting on some of the more obscure characters in crisis protocol.
D616? What? oO
The main continuity for the Marvel universe is Earth-616 so it’s a play on that. I would imagine that it will be a d6 based game.
Ah, thank you. That show how little I know of today’s comic world… XD
What disturbs me is that they’re basing it on the ‘most popular role-playing game on the market’… so D&D 5e… making it the 6.16 edition presumably (everyone does know about Earth 616 don’t they?). Level based system seems the wrong way to go as the is such a vast range of power levels in the Marvel Universe. The Margaret Weis system a few years back got dropped very quickly as a product line. I have it… and although the system allowed the likes of Black Widow to battle the likes of Hulk… it was far from perfect. I did enjoy… Read more »
Doesn’t look to be a 5E system. Some kind of bespoke D6 system instead. Matt Forbeck worked on Mutant Chronicles RPG and Brave New World RPG, so he seems to know his way around designing Superhero RPG’s.
They refer to most popular RPG and that’s what people say when they don’t want say 5e d&d… which is why I assume d&d…
This is gong to be very good or go very wrong, very fast. Matt involved gives me some hope but Disney/Marvel in charge of an RPG that should allow the consumer some level of control makes me reach for the popcorn and find a comfortable place to watch the ensuing wreck.
I chose symbiont!
I am sure back in the mid 80’s TSR did a Marvel Superheroes RPG.
My brother and friends just used to get all the little card figures, divide them up into teams, and just have big full scale fights across the fairly massive maps of New York you got with it.
Fun times. We even went so far as mapping out powers and skills of new characters who got introduced in the comics and I used to draw the cards etc.
Happy times!
