November 17, 2021 by brennon
Loke BattleMats are now on Kickstarter with their Beyond The Blue Nebula campaign. This offers up loads and loads of new maps and accessories for you to use when playing out Sci-Fi adventures at the tabletop in games like Starfinder!

As well as the 100 detailed maps there will also be 500 tiles and tokens that are useful for adding narrative to your Sci-Fi RPGs on the tabletop. All of the elements of this Kickstarter have also been made Virtual Tabletop (VTT) ready so you can easily slide them into your own campaigns.
Sci-Fi Maps & Tokens // Loke BattleMats
All of the different maps that are available as part of the campaign come with varying layers and design tweaks which make them great for those who want dynamic landscapes in their roleplaying games and skirmish adventures. You can show off the ships in their complete state, perhaps in the midst of a battle, before going right inside and showing off the inner workings.
Spaceships // Loke BattleMats
This makes them exceptionally good for the likes of Starfinder where you move between space battles and skirmishes quite a lot. If you're doing a lot of travelling you can make the star maps that you traverse interactive as other ships move around and threaten your crew.

It should be repeated that all of the maps, tokens and accessories here are all digital. This certainly suits the world that we've found ourselves in over the past few years where it has become easier to sit down at a computer and play with friends. You might also use these on a communal laptop or other devices to show off the environments players are exploring at the tabletop in real life.

I really like the way that you can customise your maps with all of the tokens in the set. You can make things as dense and cluttered as you like. It also means that players are going to interact with the environment more and more, pointing out items and perhaps using them to their advantage using gameplay.
A New Sci-Fi Adventure
If you want to dive into an adventure using these maps then you're in luck! Stephen Hart has created a Starfinder compatible adventure for you to go on called The Medusa's Child.
The Medusa's Child Adventure // Loke BattleMats
This is a full, fourty-plus page adventure that is fully illustrated and makes use of the maps and tokens from the new set. This becomes available at the Map Master Pledge Level! Make sure to check out the Kickstarter for more of the pledge options in-game.
Freebies & Sci-Fi Battle Mats
If you're eager to see their work from the Kickstarter and try it out, check out the Messier Shuttle Craft set which is FREE to download over on DriveThruRPG right now.

This free set features the interior and exterior versions of the ship as well as furnished and unfurnished versions variants. You'll also find a full set of hex tokens for playing out your battles in the stars with these various ships.
Nifty stuff, and, a good way to see whether or not you like the designs by Loke BattleMats. We've checked out their stuff in the past and it is great both physically and digitally so we'll be keeping a close eye on the Kickstarter!
If you prefer roleplaying or adventuring physically then you can also pick up the Big and Giant Book Of Sci-Fi Battle Mats from Loke to use in your tabletop games.
Are you tempted to back this campaign?

Digital only 🙁
If this does well they might end up releasing some of these in the future as physical products. Fingers crossed anyway 🙂
Fab looking ship layouts would be great for ship to ship actions for imperial and chaos/pirate gamers.
The medusa vessel is a great blast from the past.
