Modiphius Take John Carter Of Mars Role-Playing Game To Kickstarter
January 10, 2018 by brennon
Modiphius is on Kickstarter once more with another role-playing game, this time based in the world of John Carter Of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs.
Whilst there are many entry points into the role-playing game it feels like you can get stuck in properly with this particular pledge...
The game uses their tried and tested 2d20 system which has been shown in the likes of Infinity, Conan, and Mutant Chronicles. Here are some of the other features to look out for from within the core book.
- An overview of Burroughs' Barsoom and its peoples, perfect to introduce new players to the wondrous world of John Carter of Mars.
- Detailed chapters on technology, creatures, and various cultures.
- A new skill-less Talent focused narrative variation of the 2d20 system called Momentum, including a step-by-step character generation system designed to create heroes from a variety of backgrounds and concepts.
- Choose a wide variety of characters such as a dashing Red Martian duelist, a brilliant First Born scientist, a savage Beastmaster, a courageous airship officer, a disciplined assassin, or even Earthborn characters, so players can follow in the bounding footsteps of John Carter himself!
- A detailed Narrator's section with information on how to run genre-and-setting appropriate games and campaigns, including information about the great secrets of Barsoom.
- Three eras of play based on the adventures of John Carter himself. Play during the early days of Dotar Sojat, an adventure during the time when Carter was a Prince of Helium and in the years after when he was believed dead, or fight alongside Carter and his allies during the later Jeddak of Jeddaks era.
- An introductory adventure, the Mind Merchants of Mars, to get players and Narrators started on their adventures.
All of this sounds rather awesome and it's also joined by a selection of miniatures in 32mm (or heroic 28mm if you prefer) scale for you to use as you're adventuring in this unique Sci-Fi world.
All of the major characters have been represented here in this set and give you some neat options for both playing as these mighty heroes, or using them as NPCs in your games, and then, of course, going beyond that and exploring it as your own characters too.
The models are looking great and if they're anything like what we've seen from Star Trek and Fallout these are going to be some nice characterful pieces to pick up.
Stretch Goals
Since this is a Kickstarter that means Stretch Goals and here is a list of what they've unlocked so far and what lies ahead.
I must admit that this is a world that I know very little about but it does look like it would be a fascinating one to learn more about.
If you're a fan of John Carter Of Mars, let us know in the comments why we should be taking another look at this world!

Ooo they look great.
I love Burroughs novels since i’m a child. I was mildly disapointed by the movie who is not as atrocious as the critics said. Wrong casting but good ideas nontheless. And some scenes are exactly like I remenber them in the novels. The setting is quite exotic with the main character being the only human even if many denizens of mars are … hum … anatomically close. A mix of western, scifi and med fan quite unique. Actually, as a GM, you could very well start a game in a western setting on earth, play one or two games to… Read more »
thanks @bawonsamdi. also great idea to send them in blind.
John Carter himself was miscast, but the rest of the films cast I thought were perfectly fine. The film itself had woeful marketing though; Disney (Adam Stanton?) seemed to overestimate how well John Carter as a property was known. I remember seeing posters for this film, which were just a big red JC. I will say that the film didn’t deserve the criticism it received; I think critics seem to take a certain glee in an expensive film being predicted to be a flop before it even comes out, and like to add to that so that they can then… Read more »
Worried that Modiphius is spreading themselves too thin with it’s KS projects. They are way behind in completing Siege of the Citadel and I believe the Conan RPG (which was also very late) is still shipping. The Fallout game is supposed to launch on KS in a few months. Seems they are allocating resources to start new projects while others remain unfinished. Makes me wonder if they are falling into the trap of launching projects to fund completion of other ones. They have always seemed like nice guys, but this is a red flag for me.
Mödiphiüs is still a young company…but they learn from their previous mistakes. They delayed this KS for a hole year to be sure that everything is ready..and they seperated the upcomming boardgame of JCoM to do the same there. Fallout will not be on KS as far as I know. Its a pre-order they do on their website right now. Its been going for some time and will end in march. Like they did with their Star Trek RPG. There are not so many “core” members working for them full time as you would guess. Most of their projekts are… Read more »
fine points, it’s a tough balance to find but they’re getting better at it with every passing project. supporting there products will be a hurdle but the fact that they’re releasing products outside of kickstarter is a good sign.
on the subject of the indie titles they support don’t forget the beautiful Symbaroum.
Freakin’ sweet. Ill wait a few weeks before backing it. Car tax and what not.
They have also a light skirmish game inkluded for the minis in the Swords of Mars campaigne…inkluding Airshipbattle…sounds fun 🙂
i like the Modiphius core system. it’s familiar but with some cool setting specific driving mechanics to bring home the flavour. great production values to boot makes them a solid choice if the setting speaks to you.
Great minis….. Check
Made by good upstart company……. Check
Fluff……………. EEEeeeeeeeeeeee
That’s where it fails for me, did’t like the movie too much, can’t seem to get my mind wrapped around this RPG.
