The Hickman’s Skyraiders Of Abarax 5E RPG Soars Onto Kickstarter
October 28, 2021 by brennon
Tracy and Laura Hickman are now on Kickstarter with their new Fantasy roleplaying world, Skyraiders Of Abarax. As well as being tied to the 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, Skyraiders also features the Living Tome system which brings alternate reality technology into the mix at the tabletop.

At the heart of the campaign are two books that introduce you to the world of Skyraiders Of Abarax. The Skyraider's Handbook guides players through character creation, introduces new concepts from this world and the high flying adventures available to heroes once they take to their ships!
You also have the Skyraider's Almanac which is handy for those taking on the role of the Gamemaster. You'll find everything within for allowing players to explore Abarax as well as ways to take them beyond the prison isle in search of distant lands and peoples.

In addition to the two books, the Kickstarter is also focused on bringing the Living Tome System to life. This is where the Alternate Reality elements come into play. The downloadable app works with the books allowing you to scan them and find out more information from maps, character profiles and more.
The World And Characters // Skyraiders Of Abarax
You'll be able to discover clues about characters you meet, locations that you explore and even do things like pick locks and fly your ship. There are also cooperative mini-games that the players can dive into at the tabletop.
Gamemasters can also use the app and the Living Tome System to share private information with other players at the table who are connected to the app. So, if a player opens a book on a shelf and is suddenly struck by some terrible curse you can share it with them without anyone knowing. A modern way of passing a secret note under the table I guess.
I also like that they are changing up the way the traditional concept of race works in Skyraiders. It seems a neat way to bring together characters that draw on all sorts of classic Fantasy tropes whilst also adding a little twist.
Skyraiders Of Abarax Pledge Options
Skyraiders Of Abarax is broken down into a few different pledge levels as you can see below. You can get digital and physical rewards as well as collector's sets which give you alternative covers and more.

You'll also notice loads and loads of additional bits and bobs for those who back at various levels. This includes dice, bags, maps, charts, character sheets and more. If you loved the work of the Hickman's in the past then I think that you'll enjoy diving into this world.
I like the look of the artwork, the narrative they are looking to weave and the addition of the Living Tome System. I think it's neat to see more app-related content being worked into roleplaying games to enhance the action at the tabletop. This doesn't seem too obtrusive which is what you want I reckon.
It should be noted that the app isn't required to play Skyraiders Of Abarax at the tabletop. So, if you want to snap up the books and just delve into the world in a traditional sense then you can easily do that.
Are you tempted to pick up Skyraiders Of Abarax on Kickstarter?

Ooh sky pirates looks good.
Enjoyed the Dragonlance fiction and big fan of Larry Elmore art… and Snarfquest of course.
Not such a bit fan of 5e and wary of the ‘app’ as it won’t suit some of my players.
Might consider the PDF option, but not sure I’ll get around to running it, so mostly for the pleasure of reading the setting.
Larry Elmore art IS dungeons and dragons for me 🙂
Not interested in this though; app integration is a turn off, and anyone who has a $750 pledge level for rpg books and fluff is just obnoxious.
Larry Elmore and Clyde Caldwell did some amazing work back then for Dragon, Dungeon, modules, fiction… classic stuff.
As for the app, it is optional, but they warn you will miss out of stuff.
As I still haven’t touched Odyssey of Dragonlords for 5e which also has some amzing art, I don’t need another campaign.
Having an App is a great excuse for releasing a poorly tested product and sending out a stream of fixes later.
it also means that all players must have a phone at the table and in an ideal world the phones would be absent from gaming room as they are a distraction… many people can’t help checking their phones every few minutes and tend to respond to texts and the like, which is rude.
I can’t help but feel this looks a bit generic and bland, but that might just be that there seems to be a RPG Kickstarter every week.
The digital entry price, and even the basic book doesn’t seem too bad for those interested, although the higher pledge tiers seem crazy, $250 for what amounts to a few books and some dice?
