Four New Roleplaying Books Coming From Osprey In 2022
March 28, 2022 by brennon
Osprey Games have a whole host of roleplaying content lined up for release throughout 2022. There should be a little something for everyone within this collection, whether you're into something a bit "Clockpunk" or perhaps more Historical options.
Gran Meccanismo // Osprey Games
The first of these is the aforementioned Clockpunk roleplaying game. Mark Galeotti is looking to bring Gran Meccanismo to the tabletop, offering up something quirky that I doubt many folks have had a pop at before...
"Gran Meccanismo is a roleplaying game of swashbuckling swordplay where Florence’s winding alleys swarm with sinister Venetian spies and Milanese mercenaries, as an army of robot knights marches past on their way to the Vatican. Players are patricians, mercenaries, spies, and inventors amidst a Renaissance Italy where they may find themselves crossing wits with Machiavelli, avoiding the charms of Lucretia Borgia, and hearing Christopher Columbus tell you about the new world he has discovered…"
I think this sounds fascinating. I like the idea of delving into a different time period and a landscape that isn't often explored. Who could say no to robot knights and the cunning Borgia family?
Neon-Noir & Classic Noir Roleplaying
As well as Gran Meccanismo, we also have some Noir awesomeness. The first of these roleplaying games explores Noir from a futuristic standpoint with Crescendo Of Violence.
Crescendo Of Violence // Osprey Games
Well, I am already sold on the cover.
"2093, Neo York. A dystopian technological marvel, where concrete high-rises brim with holographic neon, as gilded mob bosses, flashy CEOs, and famous vid-stars all strive to consolidate their power over the masses. And while the rain reflects the neon, it never washes away the grim and filth of the streets."
I like the idea of taking the Noir idea and mixing it together with a twist of jazz and over-the-top violence. The shimmering neon glow of Cyberpunk should help add a little something extra to proceedings too. The idea is to create a roleplaying game with a unique set of rules focused on delivering cinematic and brutal showdowns between you and those in your way. Make sure you have the electro-swing playlist sorted for this.
We also have Nathan Russell's more classic Noir roleplaying setting presented in Hard City.
Hard City // Osprey Games
Walk the line between right and wrong with quick and simple character generation that gets out of your way, providing you access to a sandbox of mysteries to solve.
"In Hard City, character creation is swift and simple, generating competent yet flawed individuals and focusing on what sets them apart as they walk the fine line between right and wrong. Fast action resolution places the emphasis on the momentum of the plot, while the sandbox setting provides evocative hooks for adventures – fight crooks, rescue the innocent, thwart blackmail plots (or start them!), or uncover corruption in the Mayor’s office."
I've always liked Noir as a genre, especially as it often tells stories set in the grey areas of humanity. Both the "good" and the "bad" guys are often straddling the line between right and wrong with all manner of interlinked motives playing out in their stories. This opens up the chance to tell some great stories at the tabletop, especially with a roleplaying game. I could see this being great fun.
Jackals Expansion
We also got a peek at a new Jackals expansion, building on their Bronze Age-styled roleplaying game.
Jackals: Travellers On The War Road // Osprey Games
Inside these pages, you'll find...
"Jackals: Travelers on the War Road is a supplement exploring the regions of the Zaharets and the cultures established in Jackals. It expands the lore for each of the four cultures introduced in the core book – Luathi, Gerwa, Melkoni, and Trauj – describing their various tribes, clans, and city-states, their beliefs, strongholds, and day-to-day lives, adding more nuance and depth to the world and giving players more ways to personalize their characters."
A new set of rites, virtues and talents offers up some nice new options for those eager to explore this world. The additional adventure hooks will also plant the seeds for more tales to be told. It's a pretty fun set of rules and we looked at them closely HERE.
There is quite an array of different options for roleplayers coming up this year from Osprey Games! I am already pretty hyped about the two Noir options, especially as they both offer something a little bit different.
Are you going to be giving these new roleplaying games a look yourself?

Those sound pretty groovy, especially Crescendo of Violence and Hard City. I’ve been on a noir kick lately.
I have never heard of neon-noir as a genre? It sounds intriguing, but if I was still roleplaying I think Jackals would be more down my path. Nonetheless, it is great to see Osprey expanding like this.
Sooo getting all my “punks” in chronological context, “Clock Punk” is pre-“Steam Punk” which is pre- “Diesel Punk” which is pre- “Cyber-Punk”. Well is obviously true what they say, “Punk’s not dead”
