FFG’s Legend Of The Five Rings RPG Beginner Game Detailed
May 1, 2018 by brennon
Fantasy Flight Games has detailed the contents of their new Legends Of The Five Rings: Role-Playing Game and its Beginner Game box.
In this game, you are going to be taking on the role of honourable, or indeed dishonourable Samurai from the world of Rokugan. Included within the Beginner Game you will find four in-depth characters for you to begin your adventures with as well as a sample of the rules and of course an adventure to get you going in this epic Fantasy world.
"The Legend of the Five Rings Roleplaying Beginner Game invites you and your fellow players onto this adventure, introducing the Emerald Empire through intrigue, action, and a test of will and character. Most of the players in the game will embody these young samurais, taking on the role of a player character. The final player becomes the Game Master, who controls the actions of all non-player characters and helps to move the story forward.
Even if you're new to roleplaying or the role of the Game Master, the beginner game's pre-made adventure gives you all the tools you need to run a smooth game that introduces the mechanics and world of Rokugan to your players. Look for not only a guide to the Topaz Championship but maps, player tokens and more that serve to immerse both you and the players in the Emerald Empire."
The focus of Legend Of The Five Rings goes beyond just smashing things and slicing apart enemies and instead focuses in on the narrative side of things as well. The dice don't just talk of success and failure but also bring into play story elements and add strife to your characters actions, changing their personalities and giving you cues towards how you might act in ways which are unbefitting of a Samurai.
Will you be giving this a go?

I am disappoint. I was hoping beyond hope for a game that did not use the crap-tacular custom dice. I love narrative play, but despise systems that try and force it on to you and your players. I will just go back to the old L5R RPG from AEG… 🙁
I’ve done some of their playtest. As a long time L5R RPG fan this edition is pass-worthy. I don’t mind the specialized dice – not my preference, but they don’t chase me off. But what the dice do is outside what I need or even want. The dice should never be editing a player character in that way. A lot of voices went ignored on that one.
