The D&D Next Playtest Begins!

Yes the time has come for budding adventurers to step into the light of 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons! The Playtest for the D&D Next rules was unleashed yesterday to a very busy internet.
The fever over the new Playtest reached such high levels that it ended up stopping the download on the rules! Thankfully we have finally managed to grab a copy and should be getting you a bit of a first impressions soon!
If you want to take part then its pretty easy. Head on over to the Playtest Sign up Page right HERE and you should receive an email detailing just what you have to do.
Hopefully this will see a massive rise in people returning to Dungeons & Dragons!

So far I’m liking what I’ve read, and I can’t wait to run them with my group on Saturday. People should remember that these are only the bare bones mechanics for the most part, as it’s only the first stage of the playtest. Character customization and the like won’t come for a few months or so from what I hear. The squares are gone, distances are measured in feet again and the opening sequence on basics of RPG-ing states clearly you might opt to play without any tabletop visual aids. And if all this isn’t indicative enough, that the focus is no longer (solely) on combat, the playtest adventure in the pack lets the DM/players know politics might be a viable way to face the foes of the encounters.
I think I already prefer this to the 4th from what I’ve seen.
Saw a conference Q&A and they referred back to the paper and pencil games, citing an example of playing during a camping trip.
Fro the statements I got the impression that they want the game to be very flexible, so that if you want lots of tabletop you can, if you want a less combat orientated came that is also possible. The onus is on the DM and the players.
As long as they ditch the emphasis on tabletop game and move it back to social interation RPG then i’ll be happy.
4th edition is total shite. It’s like playing board game.
Pretty impressed so far. They took it way back to 1st ed, dumped out the crap (that no one in their right mind used anyways), and then started to cherry pick the good stuff from the rest and added it in. Pretty excited for this.
currently its sounding a lot better. May have to check it out as I love my original/basic and 1st ed ADnD
My opinions are sort of negative-neutral.
I do not like what I consider an over reliance on ability scores, especially for skills.
And I really do not like the Advantage/Disadvantage system.
Going back to inches and feet – a thumbs up.
Spells being static in their damage (fireball always 5d6) – a thumbs down.
More importantly, no word yet on the game license.
But… early days, we will see.
I did a quick read through of the play test rules. It’s D&D 3.5 with mods, it’s basically D&D 3.6.
if that’s the case…I’m out….cant stand 3.5 which seems to put me in the minority

I got the impression that what @brotherglacius said was going to be more likely.
Of course that still may not suit, but it definitely seemed that the play testing more than going back to 3.5 with brassknobs.

I have read through the Playtest and it really isn’t simply 3.5 with a few extra bits tacked on. It feels modern and fluid while also retaining a lot of the things people like about traditional D&D. I think this is a good step in the right direction for D&D.
